I love this ship and donated to the Conservancy , she is an American history making vessel and deserves to be honored !
Beautiful Ships like this ought to be saved... they are majestic icons of a bygone era that will never be reproduced... a shame a fraction of the money spent/wasted by politicians during the presidential race cannot be put to better use and channeled into projects like this, not to mentions dozens of other humanitarian and worthwhile causes

I'm a Philadelphia native and served as a Navy officer in the '80s & '90s. When I was stationed in Norfolk I saw the ship routinely tied up at the cargo piers. I only knew then it was a retired passenger ship. I later learned it was designed with an Iowa class battleship propulsion plant and had military connections and possible uses. I've seen her in Philly every now and then along the waterfront. The accolades are all very justified. She was a great ship in her day. I never understood why she had such a short career until I learned about the Government subsidies which kept her going. When the subsidies ended so did her career. In other words, she was too expensive to operate. I too, share the desire for her to live on. I, however, know a bit too much about ships, as a former Navy officer. She's obviously way past being used at sea again. Other ships have been converted to hotels or tourist sites and haven't done very well financially. It's all about money in reality, after we take away the human emotions and wishes for a future for such a great ship. In the early 21st century, with economics the way they are, there is no realistic future for this ship, no matter how much we want there to be one. The dollars just don't add up. They never did... unfortunately.

In the latter days of trans-Atlantic ocean travel.....where stormy weather was concerned....the BIG U was the ship to be on. That vessel was immensely stable and predictable in rough weather and high swells. The combination of 250,000 SHP and a knife like prow made it the safest "green water" vessel in existence.

I see this ship every day and have since I was a small child. I always would ask my parents what it was and they didn't know. Now I know and it amazes me. I would love to see it up close. I hope they get it up and running again. They should make it a period cruise where people can take part in experiencing the ship in all it's glory.

Does anyone remember David Baldwin, an executive with the US Lines who fought so hard in 1969 to keep the Big U in service? When the decision was made to pull the Great Lady from service,it broke this lovely man’s heart.

What amazes me most about the s/s United States is how little of the superstructure she had compared to other grand ocean liners. Where were all the halls and staterooms?
I traveled on the Big U to and from England in all of the passenger classes depending on my finances. I can say categorically that no matter First or Third class a passenger was treated like royalty by the staff.

This ship is beyond restoration; it's too far gone. It needs to be rebuilt with new guts from the inside out.
Four GE LM6000 Gas Turbines and recuperative steam turbines in 2:1 Combined Cycle arrangement will generate 280 MWe of electric power. Eight 30 MW Induction Motors coupled to the four shafts fitted with modern anti-cavitation screws will deliver 321,800 shp (240MW). Add prairie-masker anti-cavitation/hull lubrication and this ship will reach its Hull Speed of 42.2 knots. It'll also cruise along at 25 knots on just one turbine and ~40,000 shp for leisurely itineraries with enough left over for hotel and environmental services.

She should be restored with the aim of retaining as much of the original design..the interior should be patriotic but not over the top with warm classic tones

Although th big U was a nice ship, she was nothing compared to the Cunard and Italian ditto when it comes to on board experience...
it is to bad that we throw everything away that was america if we had a fraction of the money given to countries that hate the us the ship could be restored to sail again

She was built where I was born and still live. Newport news, Virginia. I'm proud of that ship.
A beautiful ship but too late, of course she would be the fastest with money no object , her engines were vastly overpowered and she was designed specifically to take the blue riband but economically she never made a profit , the cost to maintain that kind of speed was impractical , she needed government subsidies, like the French ships, had she been built in the 1930's she would have been unbeatable from every point of view but the technology wasn't there then .

+kerryincolumbus THE Blue Ribband was an honor given to the liner that crossed the Atlantic - New York to Southampton and Southampton to New York at the highest average speed for the crossing. It is an UNOFFICIAL Honor still held by the SSUS since her very first crossing in 1952 (I believe).
