The tiniest ping that I ever did see! And yes, rainwater works well too for watering. The pinguicula plant, aka ping, catches fungus gnats with its sticky leaves. They get caught in the sticky trap and it triggers the plants’ digestive enzymes. I purchased this carnivorous soil specifically for my carnivorous plants and decided to mix in sphagnum moss along with perlite. A peat moss mix would do great too. I purchased this ping from California carnivores
Can you teach us how to repot boldo and skaneplants? I have some, they grew real big and I don't know how to make each dirt misture. Thank you so much!
I would say if you live in a crowded or industrial area I wouldn't use rainwater unless you filter it. Most rainwater sadly is full of toxins & high in acid.
I would Not use rainwater if you live in a crowded area( high population) or industrial area unless you filter it. Rainwater is high in toxins & high in Acid.
all my younger friends have been coming to me for plant advice. I've learned so much from you and now they will too 😊 i sent one your videos on orchids; her boyfriend got her her first one for Valentine's Day. another is growing her collection and blooming into being her own plant mom. thank you so much! you've got a lot of love here in the 904 💚
I've been following you for almost a year but never saw this video. I came across pinguicula on my own recently & am so glad you're sharing your knowledge of them. I just bought a Yucca Do 1713. She looks a lot like this one. I think that baby is in it's growing phase since the leaves are flat. Their succulent phase has different leaves that are plump.
Cute, Many types of Carnivorous plants can do the job. This one is small n will grow larger. But not as large as my Cape Sundews, Saracinia's or Nepenthes. These lure n hide the captured gnats, fruit flies n other bugs. Out of site n out of mind.
You know that phenomenon I’m forgetting the name of where you’ve never heard of something before and suddenly you hear about it repeatedly? That’s happening to me with this plant. I JUST learned about this for the first time within the past hour or so from another random planty video and I just open CZcams again and this video auto played first. And I want one for those damn gnats.
I would stick to a succulent/cacti potting soil and you can incorporate perlite. If you happen to have pumice stone or gravel, I like that more than perlite for it.
Yes, rain water can be used for all plants. Either you can purchase the water or take the inexpensive route and collect the rain water. I use my rain water within 5 days, you'll know when the rain water goes bad cause it will begin to smell.
Wow! Recently I've been into the venus fly traps. However I've never seen this one. I live it. I'm researching or actually waiting for my taxes to come back so I have the extra money for a grow light and the things I need to keep this home alive. I live in Pennsylvania so putting it outside would be murder. I'm looking into this ping as well. Thank you for sharing.
I found Mosquito Bits to be the best thing for fungus gnats; I usually don’t have an issue but sometimes get them in soil or plants from big box stores. Watering with Mosquito Bit “tea” kills them in their larva stage too.
Do you have a carnivores plant you suggest over the overs to nom on bugs in your collection? Unsure is there is one that is better at it over the others.
Gnats on it seem to stay around, but the plant eventually grows new leaves and covers the older ones, which die off. At least it’s more natural than the yellow sticky traps. Bonus: pings flower! 😁 🌸
The one with the picture of the iron on it is likely distilled water and that would work fine, but if you look around you should be able to find a cheaper source.
how do you keep all of these plants alive?!?! i can’t keep air plants alive AIR PLANTS. i want a venus flytrap but i’m afraid it would die :-( any tips?
It does, but under no circumstances should it be treated like a succulent. They are bog plants and like to have their feet constantly wet. Unlike an actual succulent, which grow in more arid/desert conditions.
@@gudrunorca oh, I get that - I have a pretty long and successful history caring for carnivorous plants, thanks to a friend at the Texas Triffid Ranch. I’ve just never seen this particular variety before!

I got mine from California carnivores, they will ship them to wherever you are!

So big haha 😍
And “gnats” why you gotta love pinguicula 😜
I love the loop lol
Also called a butterwort
Hopefully I can get this plant this summer!!! I'm still killing the insects eating plants... so I gotta study more before I commit.. lol
i have aloe and a devil’s tongue cactus - i was wondering if it’s better to put succulents in that moss rather than soil and perlite?
I would stick to a succulent/cacti potting soil and you can incorporate perlite. If you happen to have pumice stone or gravel, I like that more than perlite for it.
I need one!
I want one too
So cute
Heaven sent.
So cool I definitely want one! But how do you find a mix that is nutrients free?
That's so cool
Where do you purchase your carnivorous plants from?
I need like a 150 of those! 😂
Mine just came frost damaged in the mail but hopefully I'll be able to keep them around
Nature is metal🤘
I'm going to be collecting rainwater. Is that typically something that can be used for most, if not all plants?
Yes, rain water can be used for all plants. Either you can purchase the water or take the inexpensive route and collect the rain water. I use my rain water within 5 days, you'll know when the rain water goes bad cause it will begin to smell.
@@js8741 that was super helpful!
Yes, I use rainwater on all my plants when I can. Even my picky marantas & Calathea don’t mind the rainwater.
@@perfectlyimperfect7373 thank you! That's really good to know

What store can you find these carnivores plants in? I've been looking for one.
now the only issue is that there is no where near me that carries them dangit.
This is what I need!
Where am I going to find one of those now 😂 😅
I neeeeeed this plant!! 😅
I need a cute baby gnat eater
I really want another sundew - gnats are driving me crazy
I have a fungus gnat infestation. Just put out sticky traps and it seems to be helping

is there a guide for caring for these ?
Im going to stop microwaving my dirt and get some of these cuties
The fungus gnats just start breeding in the Pinguicula media too😆 they don’t care if 1/10 of their population gets caught
Holy crap, never heard of the microwave trick, did it work?
@@jenniferwilliams9548 like a charm. 3 -5 mins on high in a safe container. Stir, cool and plant.
❤️
Where do you get your sphagnum moss?? I can’t find it anywhere :(
It’s really cheap at Lowe’s, like $5 for a big brick of it. In the indoor plants wall. Amazon sells tons of varieties too.
I've been wanting to buy one but I'm scared of killing it
I got a little ping last year but it did not do well and died within weeks ☹️ I need to try again
Hi Krystal new to your channel, love your personality ❤ where did you get your ping?
Read her pinned comment XD
Ah! Thank you!!! What a newb lmao 😂
@@BakedNeko1 thnx for letting me know and being nice about it much appreciated
Haha no problem! Us plant parents have got to help eachother, not be mean to eachother right?☺️😅
do they dissolve/eat the gnats or will you have to clean the gnats off eventually?
Gnats on it seem to stay around, but the plant eventually grows new leaves and covers the older ones, which die off. At least it’s more natural than the yellow sticky traps. Bonus: pings flower! 😁 🌸
@@gudrunorca thank you!
Small but deadly 💀
So when you guys say distilled water do you mean filtered water or the stuff you buy at the super with a picture of an iron on it?
No, it should specifically say distilled. You can find it at any grocery store.
WAIT it goes from succulent to carnivorous? I NEED ONE!
Yes! During its dormant period, its leaves form into more of a succulent formation. Then it changes to more of a rounded shape
