The earliest cup win for the dons I saw whole as a kid. Starks diving header, And Hewitt so great goals, great memories.john Hewitt was my fave player. It was still a good season for hearts, as they had been poor for years, so to be runners up in both was them back on the stage. It was the rebirth of them really. Aberdeen 2 cups that season, and quarter final in the European cup. Undefeated in all the cups. The first non old firm club to win a domestic cup double. Other than that super cup Scottish cup double of 1984. And ECWc and cup double of 1983. The only Scottish club to win a cup double including European trophies, twice in a row.

Lol..I remember watching it on TV..
Me a dons and Liverpool fan and my big brother a Rangers and Liverpool fan...we had to switch back and forth between BBC 1 and ITV because they were showing both Scottish cup final and F.A cup final.between Liverpool and Everton, at the same time 😂 was a great day watching both my teams win on t.v , super Dons!

A time when scottish football was worth watching.
Multiple teams were league title contenders.
That aberdeen team was magnificent and full of experienced campaigners and serial winners.
Dundee utd were a great side too.
Now we watch two teams every year fight it out and its all so terribly dull.

Yep. Hearts should have won the league that year, Aberdeen had won it the previous two season and Dundee Utd the season before. Aberdeen were ranked the 6th best team in Europe, Dundee Utd 8th. At the World Cup that summer Scotland would be unlucky to lose to runners-up West Germany and not to beat Uruguay, with a team full of home-based players.
Rangers decided to spend big this summer, bringing in Graeme Souness, Celtic eventually found a way to match them, and Scottish football has been dire since.

    • @jaysea32

@@lesliegriffin4866 dunfermline were a great team in the 60s,but certainly not the best.
In fact dundee,Kilmarnock and hearts all had great sides in the 60s to challenge celtic and rangers.
The 60s,70s and 80s were scottish footballs greatest decades.
Football has became a game for the elites and the provincial clubs have been left behind.

As Kevin Bridges said “it used to be a two horse race, then one of the horses died”….do you not think you’re stretching it a bit with the “two teams fighting it out” patter? 😂

Couldn't agree more.. Don't forget that Dundee utd were European Cup semi finalist in 84 and uefa cup runners up the year after this final.. That type of quality and standard will never be seen in Scottish football ever again, firstly we don't produce the same amount of talented players that we used too, because the clubs outside the old firm haven't got the money to invest in any youth academies or even remotely compete with the old firm today.. To make matters worse Europe's elite are miles and miles ahead financially and technically of even the old firm.. It's scary to think that the only chance for the old firm to survive would be to break away from what has become one of the most monotonous leagues in Europe.. Personally I would love to see the old firm dominance at least challenged, but pigs don't fly do they lol.. On a final note, I heard through the grapevine the sfa have prevented very wealthy investors from pouring their money into a number of Scotlands top club, for whatever reason I cannot fathom.. (food for thought) that may well be one the reasons why Scottish football has declined so much over the last few decades, such a shame considering we have probably the oldest football league in the world alongside england and we still have clubs outside the old firm with a big fan base like aberdeen, hibs, hearts, Dundee utd, Motherwell, and even Dundee and kilmarnock.. Where Scottish football will be in 10 or 15 years time, Im dreading to think

Hearts lost the league the week before, the famous Albert Kidd game. As they trotted out of the tunnel before the start of this game, the look on the Hearts players faces made me think they were already beat.

In Scotland there are two awful clubs standing a million miles below everyone else. Unless you enjoy listening to brainless neds glorifying murderers, of course. And did you actually watch this video? Hearts were really unfortunate not to get back into this game before it got away from them in the second half.

for all watching / commenting on this - was truly a season of decline for Aberdeen = check the league position ; Fergies interest had waned a bit by then and had eyes on greener pastures - even the signings and replacements from youth teams were way short of what could have been = sustained levels ; then porterfield really turned it pear shaped - its okay if your just happy with odd cup wins though ....
