It’s been said that God leads every man he loves through a desert at some point in his life. Whether it’s spiritual or physical, some say that the arid wilderness reminds a man of just how much he needs God. Others view the desert as a glimpse of Hell on Earth. To the late Johnny Cash, the desert was the devil’s playground. "It's a hell of a place that he has for hell.”
Whatever view you take, history has proven though dry, and desolate - the desert of Eastern Arizona has provided the US with one of the richest copper deposits in the world. First discovered over 140 years ago at a campsite known as “Clifton,” the copper deposits in Greenlee County would help fuel the industrial revolution and aided the nation in World War II.
Today, the cities of Clifton and Morenci are home to the largest copper mine in North America: the Morenci Open-Pit. Operated by Freeport-McMoRan, the Morenci mine produces an average of 800,000,000 pounds of copper per year. New copper discoveries are rare and many historic mines across the country are seeing reserves dwindle, but with its deep roots - the Morenci Open-Pit continues to deliver year after year.
The railroad has been the backbone of the Morenci Mine for over a century, and as long as the ground has copper to mine, the railroad will continue to move it. In fact, Freeport-McMoRan operates its own industrial railroad that carries chemicals, equipment, and copper from the mine in Morenci to Clifton - where it interchanges with Genesee & Wyoming’s Arizona Eastern Railway.

The sounds of the trains are so crisp
The dynamic range is actually really limited as though the audio is mastered for listening on small speakers and it makes the train sounds really jarring instead of relaxing, especially how the engine sounds suddenly vanish when the horn goes off. I'd really love to listen to these videos in the background but there's a champion compressor somewhere in the audio processing chain and it needs to be removed.
Nice video! I like the fact that one of the lead locomotives has no ditch lights on it! Very rare and awesome at the same time!
Your productions are always clear and sharp and the narration is always informative. Thanks for another great video.
Another fantastic film by DIB Productions!!!! Thank you for all the hard work you guys do to bring these experiences to viewers such as myself. :) Matt.
I live in El Paso, Phelps Dodge has a refinery here. Most of the product is transported by truck, anodes that are over 99%copper. . PD has closed most of their smelters as they closed many mines in the area. Great video thanks for posting.
Another good one Drayton! I really enjoyed this. Incredible scenery, steep grades and great narration. What else could you want? Thank you.
I do believe I heard a meow at 3:51. Considering those Geeps & the cat are about as unalike as 2 sounds can be, the contrast is kinda funny.
Lol was that a pet cat
This is absolutely beautiful! The scenery is stunning! Excellent work! Just wonderful. Thanks again for another great video.😊
What a scene! Thanks for putting this up!
Great scenery great video
Great video AND narrative description Well Done !
Beautiful trains. Bravo for keeping it up that grade.
Thank you 😊
This reminds me of the Zig-Zag Railroad of Australia. When I was 11. And you where not far where Steven Spielberg filmed his movie Duel!!
This is one of the most beautiful videos you’ve produced Drayton, absolutely love this and the Wild West Railroading series
really excellent sound recording - I could almost feel the power digging in for the grade! if I'd have turned the volume up much more, things woulda started falling off the shelves. great stuff!!
Vary nice video. Really captures those desert vista that I really miss, being back east now. I have a G&W shortline that runs through town here, and we have those same old rust buckets as well.
$1.93 for gas !!
I'm headed Go-Go Gas in Clifton AZ... !!!
I don't know how you feel about model railroading Drayton, but we usually have a dandy show at the fairgrounds in Lynden, WA
I love Model railroading. I actually work for ScaleTrains. -Drayton
Love seeing these kind of videos.
Nice video Drayton!
D-Man,stunning scenery! Beautifully captured! The history lesson you impart, involves research, prior to visit, but it really brings the subject into line with the real world. Perfection in another video!
Nice as always Sir. Have a blessed weekend everyone!

Great seeing railroading in this area. I live in Phoenix and have yet to head over to this eastern spot...thank you :)
I'm wondering about the consist(s). I -thought- the mine would be sending out ore via the trains but here I see boxes and tank cars and one little gondola. I thought it'd all be gondolas or hoppers, for the ore, rather like the big coal trains. What don't I know?
It kinda sucks Genesee and Wyoming have started getting rid of the unique shortline liveries for that unified candy corn paint scheme. It was neat at first but now that I keep seeing it all over the country I'm kind of sick of it.
Me to the only good thing for me is they keep old school emd power
Man those engines sound like a real engine Diesel engine power!
Whatever you're using for microphones on-site, keep using them.
great video
Awesome video 👍🇺🇸😎
Nice video
Showing my ignorance but why would a copper mine be shipping product using box cars and tank cars? I would expect to see hopper cars (like coal) used but I'm not a miner.
The box cars are used for rolled and sheet copper. They need protection from the weather. The tanks cars are for LNG fuel and some copper slurry being sent east for further processing, according to the Freeport engineer I talked to a couple years ago.
Given the flooding in the area, I hope Drayton is fairing well
That former up has a weird bell in the nose
Awesome......
...3:50... the kitty said hello...
You guys didn't film south yard?
Love those railroad
What’s the grade on that hill? I’m building a very large HO scale layout and I want to redo my mine to have a hill and an interchange.
I believe upwards of 3.5%.
EDIT: He says it at 2:43. 5%.
5% grade
Cool video. But this is nothing compared to what Freeport is doing in Indonesia at their grasberg mine.
At the increases we've seen of late of copper prices orange box store 500' 12 THHN $82.62 verses 20 bucks Should I blame it on metal speculation or just plain greed. A frustrated electrician.
It’s really crazy how much prices have changed. I’ve been watching it, too. Thanks for watching! -Drayton
I think I can I think I can I think I can
This is the third time you guys have uploaded this same video why do you keep posting this video so much
We have never posted this segment as a stand-alone video before. We intend to publish each segment of the Go West series separately for those who don’t have 1-hr to watch it all the way through.
Didn't you already post this video once before ?
Yes, but not as a separate segment. We intend to divide each segment of the Go West series into its own video.
@@DelayInBlockProductions Thanks 👍
