- A couple of wee gems featuring Duncam MacRae (original Para Handy), Alex MacKenzie (skipper of The Maggie), Roddy McMillan (future Para Handy) and the Immortal John Grieve (forever Dan McPhail engineer of The Vital Spark).
Somewhere between the Inner Hebrides, Port Glasgow , Crinan, Ardrishaig and the lost continent of Mu this extraordinary crew are still aboard their puffer.
This was NOT a part of any BBC TV series but an independent film made by Douglas Gray. The lyrics and music are by the actor Alex MacKenzie. Guitar accompaniment by George Hill.
My God a real magic piece of film, their faces are so familiar to me from the wonderful Ealing films. Many thanks. Gérard lacey in Ireland.
first heard these songs when i was a wee boy over 50 yrs ago, hadn't heard them since the late 70's and i could remember every single word of all of them on here, it was john grieve popping into my head singing the land of the hee drum ha drum ho tune decided for no good reason simply because richard osman was on telly doing who do you think you are about his 4 x great grandfather being a fisherman, just popped into my head and brought me here, one earworm i don't mind.
The Saxon was owned by some of the Kerr family of Millport. Walter Kerr had the photographer's shop on the island. That puffer was a regular at the pier and is in many photographs.
Duncan MacRae lived round the corner in Kames Bay. His house has a wee blue plaque on the garden wall.
love how the Engineer had a happy look on his face while oiling the steam powered winch and admiring the view
Love it. I never got to see Duncan Macrae in Para Handy and I thought there was no footage left at all. Never got to meet him either. From one of his Granddaughters. Thank you.
I'm so sorry to read that you didn't get to see Duncan Macrae, your grandfather even, as Para Handy. I do remember seeing him when I was a boy and the Para Handy stories came out on TV. Although I was young, I realised how good he was - Para Handy to perfection. There were several episodes and of course we saw them only once: you couldn't record TV programmes back them. In due course Para Handy came back to TV with Roddy McMillan as Para Handy. I didn't think he captured the spirit of the role, and would have no wish to see that series again. But oh to see the original with Duncan Macrae! The film was of course in black and white and would look terrible now, but we were happy with it back them. All the best to you!

The scene at the beginning where the crew is coming down the ladder from the pier was shot at Millport Pier and the puffer was the Saxon, owned and skippered by “Saxon” Kerr, a member of an old and weel kent Millport family and the crew were all Millport men. She delivered coal to Millport, among other Firth of Clyde towns and worked the coastal trade for many years.
That is the smertest boat in the tred. If Dougie was here he would tell you himself.
a Scottish puffer with a sound boiler if what Dan says is true in the stories.
Para Handy only calls Dan a fireman only once in one story when their Engineer fails to get up out of bed to fix the whistle.
Diamond. I loved this. Never even knew this existed.
Thank you it's lovely and have I have put it in my Vlog
Och, man, just sublime. I seem to have owned the Highland Voyage album for ever, just the best of high jinks!
Didn't know who these people were but they seem like nice pleasant lads on here. R.I.P to them 😇😇😇
This made me laugh like 'Gregory's Girl'. Hhaahaaa
