I met Leigh Whannel a few years ago. I told him I was a big fan of 'Saw'. He said, "Just the first one, right? Coz the rest suck."
Love that man.
he was so real for that
The reason did suck besides the 7th one mainly because we see Lawrence again.
I think he’d appreciate saw X
saw 1 and 2 are amazing
@@RJ_824I like them all, even though I dislike how from Saw 3 and onwards it devolved into torture porn. That’s said, 1 (and 2) is definitely the best, hands down. So unique and went to create one of the most successful horror movie franchises ever.
It's somehow hilarious to know Saw was made by two young chill Australian dudes
thats true honestly
They our Aussie way
The dvd commentary is hilarious
Wrong!! That is what they want you to think
I seriously LMAO not knowing that it was Cary Elwes portraying his character in the film.
My dumb arse thought whomever the actor was, was HORRID (in an annoyed eyeroll inducing horrifically horrifying way) in a total NoObish way.
::hangs head in shame::
But still!!!!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
”Actually the scene where I saw off my foot wasn’t in the script. At the time when I was trapped for real during lunch, I just got so tired and hungry that I decided to actually saw off my foot, and luckily the camera was rolling and it all went on tape.”
Literally LMAO
😂
Regardless of what you think of Saw, you have to admire how they made it under such tricky circumstances
Truth and I appreciate how they stand by errors and plot holes and such the original had. They were aware of faults but still made a cult classic that can't be let go 9 films later 😬 I only dislike the 3 they loosely had a hand in if at all
Nah fr they actually used a real bear trap!
Is anyone else just completely obsessed with Saw like I am? I mean damn... feels like every night I end up watching behind the scenes vids and stuff ... I can't get enough!
Yep! Me too! Been stuck in this loop for years, haha. 💀
Yes, I am!! It freaks me out but I'm addicted!! This was one of the first real horror movies I ever watched as a little girl 😄😱 I was probably 12 or so when I first watched it back in the mid-2000s. Before watching this, the only "scary" movies I watched were Disney's, "Don't Look Under the Bed" about the boogeyman and Disney's "Halloweentown" & "Halloweentown 2" 😂 I also saw Mary-Kate & Ashley's series about their sleepover where the girls dressed up as scary characters and sang this creepy song which terrified me 😱😂😂 Those were my only introductions to horror but I was hooked!
From then on, I started watching scary films 😈 To this day, I have several horror movie favorites including; the Saw series, particularly the first 3 Saw movies (and Spiral), the "Halloween" series w/Michael Myers, The Conjuring, The Grudge 1 & 2, American Pyscho, and VHS 1 & VHS 2 😭👹
Saw was ahead of it’s time, I rewatched all of the movies and it’s like a gaint soap opera
i would also be obsessed but the first 3 movies scared like the .... outta me when i was eleven
VERY MUCH SO THATS ALL I WATCH!!💜💜💜💜
Leigh has an accent he nailed the American accent
We aint got no accents.

Realized it before watching behind the scenes. Shame that his character died so stupidly, but i guess he would die anyway in another part

Behind the scenes make my fear of horror movies less awful and more bearable
true
I enjoy behind the scenes and making of videos far more than horror movies…I think I’ve maybe seen 10 horror films in my whole 40 years
That makes both of us. I got into horror at 12 but at the same time, I watched the making of horror films like insidious which is one of the first horror films I watched.
no literally! i have to watch the bts and stuff after watching horror movies so i can actually sleep at night LMAO
I am so happy Leigh and James have laid the foundation of this amazing franchise
As with Insidious.
Agreed
7:23 “how much time do these guys have in their hands that they’re building all these contraptions?” - a question that would become a key theme of the series 😂
It was great that Cary Elwes andvTobin Bell came in to this movie helping new directors and writers make their project become reality.
Exactly!!
danny glover as well
Nah I think they had the right level. Its helped by its bootstrap vibe.
I still love that they deadass got Wesley from the Princess Bride to be Dr. Gordon, that's ridiculously cool. I finally got to watch this first movie in the series and the second I saw Cary onscreen I was like "wait a minute, I know that motherfucker"
His role in Princess bride wasn’t as good as his role in saw but have an opinion
So, that's where I know him from. Kind of funny how both Gordon and Adam are played by more comedic actors
To me he's still Robin of Locksley from Mel Brook's "Robin Hood: Man in thights" and nothing can change my mind since it was the movie where my generation came to know him 🤣
I watched it 3 times before I realized that it was him 😂.
@@thereal_chowderhe didn’t even say it was good he just said he recognized him the fuck do you mean “have an opinion” hope you’ve grown up in the last 2 years since
Dope to know these guys came out of school and made a badass franchise. James just making badass films after that... minus aquaman but I'm still a big fan
Aqua Man was amazing
Aqua man was pretty decent
Aquaman was great and the soundtrack was beautiful
Aquaman was pretty damn good (but long) and a massive hit.
Really? Aquaman was a barely coherent, nonsensical cgi nightmare with some stupid f*cking decisions and choices…but, I’m glad you guys enjoyed it.
Seeing James Wan's and Leigh Whannel's eyes lit up talking about their experience on this film... they really did achieve every indie filmmaker's dream! It's so inspiring to see how much love and dedication went into this movie I love so much. It fills me with renewed enthusiasm for my own writing and (hopefully) eventual filmmaking... It can be done! It can be loved! While Saw is a controversial movie (and even more controversial franchise) no one can deny the reactions it inspires, and the way everyone who seemed to touch it saw its potential and did their part in pushing it where it needed to be... Cry worthy. Thanks for the upload!
James and Leigh’s laid-back nature restores my faith in nice movie makers. 😭 They’re so humble and grounded and chill af 😂
Lol that's because they ain't from the states
Ah yes, Jigsaur
Did not expect Leigh to sound like that. Wow
Jesus bless you
The fact that they made a short film that was sent along with their script was a very smart idea.
Pretty crazy that this fun little project from these two young and inexperienced Australian guys turned into a billion dollar franchise that has spawned 10 movies.
As they say, some of the best things in life happen by accident.
James and Leigh are so adorable omg
as a saw superfanatic this was a gem to watch
Why do you love the saw films so much?
Genuinely interested!
@@felixculpa9303 I never said the Saw films. just the 1st one. the rest are a cash grab.
The fist film is a classic of American horror. That ending is Still one of the most mind blowing moments in film history.

I’m not being facetious… I’m here, I obvs love the first Saw too.
I’m genuinely curious because I’m not typically a lover of horror films… Saw is really an exception for me.
So I was wondering for superfanatics what it is about these kinds of movies that they love so much.
@@felixculpa9303 It's my first horror movie franchise! I watched it as a kid and the first movie franchise I've put thought into. I've seen thousands of horror movies but the saw series no matter how good or bad or gruesome it gets it have a special place in me.
@@etherealguy8161
I get that… Saw was the first horror i saw in the cinema.. the hype was big at the time.
It was certified 18 but I was only 17 so I thought I was so cool actually getting in to see it.
I’ve seen all the typical horrors but i don’t love gore. The first Saw wasn’t gory.. it was still horror but more a psychological thriller.
Really a work of genius.
Nobody expected John to get his ass up at the end!
I enjoyed the mind fuck of it.
It’s still got that student-film-feel, even with several kinda-big names in it, and that’s one of the elements that makes it so charming and memorable imo.
It’s important for something to be earnest and heartfelt. Even if something is “bad,” if it was clearly made with love and true effort, people will almost certainly love it. The unique concept, the twist, and the earnest, scrappy, student-film charm is what propelled SAW to success. No sequel will ever be able to recapture what made the first film a great experience to watch.
It’s fun to show the original SAW to people who have only heard about the franchise and who have heard about the series’ reputation, because they’re totally blown away by how great it is. I’d say that the entire franchise is overrated but the original film is *criminally* underrated and maligned as torture porn when it’s so much more than that. I love this movie
I just watched up the the sixth movie this past weekend and the first one really shocked me as all I had know about saw was that it was “torture porn” but it is truly a thriller
@@CaptainKie1 saw III was when it become “torture porn”
The first two movies were true psychological thrillers
@@CaptainKie1 oh yeah Saw III is still a good movie but that was definitely the shift
Saw 1 wasn't what it later became known for, which was gore. It's more of a detective, psychological thriller with some horror aspects, much in line with movies like Se7en or Zodiac. In fact except for Amanda's reverse trap scene where she cuts open the guy to get her key, there's not much shown in camera, especially considering how later installments would. In a way that worked better since they had to convey that through the characters' acting instead of relying on shock factor which later became their crutch to keep the audience engaged and leaving the acting or the script as an afterthought, making the explicit violence trivial the more extreme they would go with it. It almost became a caricature of itself at a certain point.
@@Benjarmon Exactly, Saw 3 was the point of no return where they would bring it up a notch every next movie which almost became a caricature of itself. Saw 2 was imo, the best balance between body and visceral horror, and that psychological thriller detective story the first installment had.
These guys (James & Leigh) have more talent in their pinky toe than half the overhyped overpaid hacks in Hollywood!
I cant help but just imagine , what this movie would have looked like if they were given more money and time.
Would have looked like shit imo
I LOVE the low budget set
Sometimes less money = more creativity, and when you give directors unlimited funds, their work quality actually declines. SAW looks perfect, exactly as it should look, and a SAW I made with more funding might not have become the classic it is today.
I think the acting would’ve been better
@@Jay-qh6uv Someone gets it!!!! I can’t stand people who have this mindset of “more money means better movie.”
I'm a big fan of SAW and all the franchises. The first one was no brainer a masterpiece.
I agree fully. I love them all but the original is on another level of brilliance.
If Evil Dead/Saw has taught me anything its a horror movie is always scarier on a smaller scale
Legitimarely love when a horror movie is just 2 people in a room talking
I’ve avoided watching these movies bc I assumed I wouldn’t like them…but just saw the first and second one and I really liked them a lot! Lots more deep psychological meaning than I expected!
The passion they had is insane
What’s in the water in Australia that just produces greatness lol
Roo piss
The Saw Series is a masterpiece its a weird combination of Not too scary but pretty horrifying and Ofc dont forget about the gore that why so many loved it, its just over all a great series ive watched everything about 7 times
The Saw franchise is in no way ‘a masterpiece’. I bet you couldn’t find 2 people in 7 billion who would think, or use those words unprompted…
@@-MrFozzy- you just found one
@@-MrFozzy- Make that two. Let me guess you love marvel and Star Wars ?
@@-MrFozzy- make that 3
Saw 1 wasn't really that gorefest it eventually became in the later installments, it's more of a detective, psychological thriller. In fact there's no visceral horror apart from when Amanda cuts open the guy to get her key to the reverse bear trap. It's not any more disturbing than say Se7en. I'd say they started to over indulge in that gore aspect almost to it's detriment from Saw 3 onwards, the explicit violence just became trivial and most of those movies relied on its shock factor to keep the audience engaged rather than the actual script itself. Still good movies, especially their plot twists at the end.
I went here because it's the only way to see Adam alive and well TwT
He didn't deserve that death. ಥ‿ಥ
Same 😭😭
Same :((
There is a theory
Cringe.
The fact they got Cary Elwes who was an established actor at the time, maybe not huge but very established is cool. And the fact he came back was even better. I did hear he didn't come back until they met his pay. But, he had been in many movies. Hot Shots, Men in Tights, and of course Princess Bride. But he was in so many more movies and a very established actor.
2 young boys getting an idea = boom one of the biggest horror movie series
25:19 "behind the scenes is nothing like the actual film"
*cary elwes ends up getting locked in his shackle on set and also accidentally cuts himself with the "blunt" saw* AM I NOTHING TO YOU??
I watched the entire series in 3 nights and I love them so much.
The movie was actually brilliant. Especially the reveal at the end. Insane! They're both very successful now and it's well deserved. And so well written. I mean look how big it's became and holy shit! We have a new Saw film coming out as well. A ten(11th counting Spiral). But this is Saw Ten. And the trailer looks great! And what makes it great is Jigsaw is alive in the film which is a gigantic plus. Every film that featured Jigsaw heavily in it is what ppl want to see. Tobin Bell owns that role. He takes the character very serious, and has a passion in his heart for the character. He understands him completely. And with Tobin Bell back, he will put asses in seats. He's a very underrated actor, and a great actor as well. What a great character he's created! I can't wait!
Nobody counts Spiral. That's legitimately one of the worst movies I have ever seen in my life. Like, not even so bad it's funny, just straight trash.
I respect your opinion my friend. Maybe it would have suited itself better off not trying to be a part of the Saw universe, and possibly made it a bit different. Without the traps. Ppl wanted more of a Saw film. And that's definitely not what we got. Imo I enjoyed it. I'd agree it should have definitely been it's own film.
However as a Saw film, I didn't enjoy it. Lol
It's still 10 films including spiral. Saw 1-7, jigsaw is eight, and spiral is 9. Saw x is tenth.
If you count spiral it’s still 10
this is such a refreshing and happy watch for being about such a dark film. it really seems like everyone was really dedicated to the movie and they had a lot of fun working on it
An Australian has to go to Canada to get work visas sorted out for working in America?
Whaaaaaa-????
crazyyy that Adam basically created Jigsaws whole character
I'm sure these guys had no idea Saw was gonna end up so big and the trilogy would go on as long as it has
27:46 "somewhere out there Carey Elwes is looking to get me back" that aged well considering Carey sued him.
Omg really ?? What happened?
I like how Cary elwes stuck with an American accent for the interview lmaoo
this is my comfort video
They looked like two guys who had no idea that they will create an entire movement!! Hope some day we. Have Adam back !! He didn't deserve that death!
Lee was great in the first film and he's a great writer and film maker as well. His version of Invisible Man in 2020 made him even better. James Wan has become even bigger. He's an incredible writer, he's now had crazy success in many genres. So they've gone from making this simple but well written, but very low budget movie and obviously making well over the budget. And this was their start. An iconic horror film series in which I really haven't seen a shitty entry. I liked every film. Yes some I may like more but I can throw any film from the series on and enjoy it. Including Spiral. Which is probably the highest budgeted film or part of the Saw universe. And there's a good chance it didn't perform as well at the box office than most that were shoe string budget.
watching the making of saw movies / horror movies in general while drawing has become my new obsession
Ah, this is sooo cool - I'm so happy to have found this video albeit Saw 1 coming out 18 years ago! I still remember seeing this movie when I was a 7th grader back in 2005!!!
PS: Leigh was sooo funny as Adam and even proved he's just as versatile when at the end of the movie where he showed his full-range of drama & acted with a terrified demeanor as well :) I also love that Leigh mastered the American accent despite having a strong Australian accent in real-life! Totally nailed it :)
The way James describes the synopsis of the movie, it really makes it seem like a 13 year old came up with it.
They did such a good job with this movie 10 out of 10
These Guys Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi are true inspirations of making a dream come true... Makes me believe anything's possible.
Love this making-of clip. Saw is absolutely my favorite horror movie. I still get goosebumps when Adam screams at Jigsaw at the end and the credits roll with his screams still going. A masterpiece despite the flaws James Wan sees in it.
The plot twist of the first movie made this franchise.
After all these years I finally thought to read the screenplay and when I tell you my love for this movie EXPLODED-i have such an insane appreciation for Leigh Whannell and James Wan
R.I.P Gregg Hoffman :(
At least he still posthumously produces the films.

i love the saw series but just watching this makes upset remembering that leigh left the series to work on other things. the first three movies plus saw 0.5 are so aesthetically pleasing in the way only leigh could make it, and you could tell from this video he had a lot of passion for the project.

Saw X was an awesome movie as well. They did an exzellent job. The whole atmosphere was good, the traps brutal and John Kramer as protagonist was a nice idea
Saw was a welcomed change for the horror genre because up until then horror movies followed the same formula an individual or group of people trying to survive the wrath of a serial killer eg. Freddy Krueger or Jason Voorhees Saw did things differently and it paid off massively it spawned a franchise that dared to be different.
Leigh is a cutie.
It was the best movie I've ever seen. Old and memorable. Cary elwes is very handsome.
Gregg Hoffman.. Mark Hoffman.. ohh, I see
I think being relatively young and new to the industry, not having big studio business "bad" habits, allows for a new take, approach, fresh eyes on the situation when wanting to make something within a tired genre but attempt to make it original and uniquely intense. Veteran directors and writers loathe, critics hate, fans love . . . Until it sparks a ridiculous lucrative franchise. Hoping Spiral is actually interesting and unique.
Lol this is soo cool thx for publishing it for free

In late October of 2004 I had one of the best nights at the movies. Saw was so suspenseful and thrilling and mysterious ... really excellent psychological horror. During that final scene, we were throttled and gasping. Such a great night.
I never watched any of the rest of the movies b/c from what I saw of the ads & previews they only seemed to be gore-fests designed by Lionsgate Studio to make box office dough.
Then you are missing out dude...at least watch the sequel it's considered to be even better than the first movie...I love them both equally...the third part is a lil more brutal and gory but also has a cool twist at the end although not as good as the first two movie's twists...haven't watched the rest of the franchise yet but from what I've heard it's just dumb and gory torture porn

My favorite horror movie ever
I've watched saw for years, its my favourite franchise, so HOW DID I NOT KNOW THEY WERE AUSSIES?????
I only realized recently that one of the character actors that appears in the film was also one of the screenwriters!
I really don’t like torture movies however saw 1 is bloody brilliant… great story and acting!
I wish those who claim the acting is so cringe worthy could go back in time and see this in theaters when it came out. As a young teen when it came out, you get a much more terrifying feeling seeing this in a full movie theater that you just don't get seeing this at home by yourself. I would love to go back to that time or at least have more studios focus on more low budget, good execution type of films. Hollywood is plagued with garbage writers that think a bigger budget and more CGI fixes poor writing.
Saw X out this year….still going
Thank you so much for sharing this video. I had no idea that the people behind the movie were so young.
