    Hi..... this mandolin is a Lyon and Healy model 'B' manufactured in the U.S. in the early 1920s. These L&H mandolins have a unique sound not unlike a traditional bowlback but quite different from the typical flatback mandolin. It is a lovely instrument for performances in all styles. I do play a very nice German bowlback mandolin as well .... you will hear it on the Scarlatti video. Thanks for your interest.

    Love the way she plays. I have been searching high and low for something to supplant my love for Takashi Ochi mandolin recordings, this could be it. Could be the room acoustic but I found the mandolin sounds very nice indeed with a very rounded resonance.

    Hi Siemen.... Yes... from a concerto by Hummel specifically for mandolin. Vivaldi and Beethoven are two other well-known composers who wrote for mandolin, but there are many others, although I agree that they are not well-known today. Many thanks for all comments.

    Similar but different, Daniel.... the mandolin is tuned like a violin and uses similar finger patterns. The mandolin repertoire covers everything from classical to folk and bluegrass, and there are a number of similar instruments around the world. Give it a go.... you may enjoy it as much a I do.....

    Well, I'm probably not the only one wondering why there have not been any new videos from Marissa or Joel. What happened? As a mandolin player for almost 2 decades, I consider Marissa as one of the world's premier mandolin players, seriously in the top 10 in the world. I'd really like to hear her play one of the world's best Lloyd Loar mandolins, as I'm sure others would as well. Joel is an excellent player as well, not to ignore that, but I'm a mandolin player.
    He is a worthy music partner. One more thing.... I'd really rather not have to mention it, but I don't understand the context of the majority of the comments below. Seriously?? Haven't you ever heard of the R word---- you know.... Re Re Re Re Re Re Re RESPECT.... Just a little bit?
    There are other places on the internet for your ideas. Let's watch these videos for THE MUSIC, and give the artists the upmost respect they deserve.... PRETTY PLEASE?

    • @marissamando
      @marissamando  Před 6 lety +1

      Hi Darren.... Many thanks from Joel and I for your compliments and comments.... We are still playing together but not to the extent that we could when we were both music students and the necessity to earn a living was not as demanding. Australia is in a difficult location globally to be able to succeed solely as a musician and we find ourselves naturally heavily committed with our 'real' jobs at the present time. We are currently playing in a quartet - some video examples have been recently posted - which has afforded us a welcome change of direction, less demanding, while keeping the fingers nimble. Regarding the Loar mandolins, I have never had the opportunity to play one and I am sure they are wonderful instruments. Next time Chris T. is in town I might introduce myself and see what happens. I must say that for classical music, my 1920s Lyon and Healy has a unique sound, more approaching that of traditional roundback mandolins than do the Gibsons which was probably more by accident than by design, while the flat back and longer string length suits me as well. Best regards and keep playing.... Marissa

      @darrendix5163 Před 6 lety +2

      What a treat to hear from you! From what you are saying, it sounds to me like we ought to tighten the mandolin family up a bit. We are all connected somehow. You couldn't find a better place to start than Chris Thile, and the idea of both of you playing together has come across my mind more than once. Get out of town that you have not been playing any Loars! Don't you know Steven Gilchrist? He restores one Lloyd Loar mandolin only per year, and it's not even cost effective for him to spend his time doing that instead of producing his own instruments, which are all sold in 2 batches per year in, ALL pre-sold in Nashville. Anyway, I have wanted to contact you for a while, as I've been involved with the mandolin scene in particular for many years. What's even better is that I know all the top musicians and producers in Brasil, which is where you REALLY need to go. And, of course, I am very close with Hamilton de Holanda, and his producer, and the whole family. I enjoy my connections in Brasil the most, but I also know just about every last mandolin player in the U.S. Not to disrespect your Lyon & Healy, it is a magnificent and exceptional mandolin, especially considering most of those old Lyon & Healy's don't tend to be so exceptional, but you should let us show you all the best Lloyd Loar F-5's. We know where they all are! (just so happens to be a 1923 Loar, and 1929 F-5 right here!) . You are one of the best classical players in the world, right there with Chris Thile in my book. We want to hear YOU play a Loar!! Chris Thile actually owns 2 mandolins that are sequential in serial number to that of the mandolin of Lloyd Loar himself. I don't know anyone else in the world that compares to you and Chris Thile on mandolin. How can we contact each other? I am 100% about the music. Have you met Mike Marshall? I can see you are familiar with him and Caterina. I can most certainly make concerts happen in the U.S. and Brasil as well as Europe.(Anywhere in the world, really.) I think you have a website with your contact info, so if you don't mind, do look for a message from me. BELEZA from BRASIL! AND--- you are underestimating yourself. You need to get out and play more in Brasil, the U.S., and Europe, and I can help make that happen. The only thing I can say is that I can't say that you or Chris Thile is the better mandolin player!

    • @marissamando
      @marissamando  Před 6 lety +1

      Hi again, Darren.... You have very valuable advice, and part of me would love to be as dedicated as Chris, and Caterina and Mike (whom I met in Germany at two of the BDZ Festivals that I have attended) and all the other wonderful players... and they are many.... just have a look around CZcams. Naturally, I have come in contact with many types of mandolins both in Australia and Europe, including high-end Gibsons (no Loars as yet, to my knowledge) and Gilchrists here in Australia. I love the Lyon and Healy Model B that I have (it's almost 100 years of age and in perfect condition).... the sound is closer to the high-end Italian bowl back mandolins and well-suited to my repertoire which includes many classical and baroque works. It is quite different though to the Knorr (German bowl-back) that I also use when a change of colour is dictated by the music. A professional musician's life can be interesting and rewarding (though not often financially...) but the hours of practice and unavoidable travel can make it less desirable without the dedication and commitment of the true professionals you mention. I briefly met Chris Thile when he was performing with his band in town recently, and he is clearly a great musician and person. Perhaps I will get to sit down with him next time we meet. Best regards....Marissa.

    Marisa has the most brilliant of talent to ever play the Mandolin to perfection. As a violin student, I picked up for first time the Mandolin 60 years ago, as the string notes are identical to the violin (except the mandolin has double strings) but, of course playing the violin is not the same as strumming the Mandolin by far!

    Marissa, just found your site while I was looking into Hummel's mandolin music. This is exquisite. I played with the Milwaukee Mandolin Orchestra for many years and would occasionally see these Lyon and Healy two-point instruments which (I think) were made in the Chicago area. Your beautiful instrument seems perfect for Hummel's music and your technique is wonderful.

    Absolutely beautiful. I've just started to play the Ukulele, and hope one day to cross over to the Mandolin. Funnily enough I think a lot of the cheaper Mandolins sound very much like Banjos, which I hate. I like the Uke and Mandolin to sound like harps, it makes me feel like I'm in Heaven. You playing is simply devine and an inpiration to me. Edited to add: I've just got a Mandolin and learning to play. Thanks for the inspiration.
