AFTER being educated about the situation, still insist on making trouble for people like you.
A simple phone call to the dumpster owner the next day would have cleared everything.
Bad cop, no donut.
They love to levy fines on people for cars and junk on property, and smog fees, etc etc etc, but gawd forbid somebody come along and do something good for the environment that puts a few dollars in their pocket. Oh sure you got it dropped, but look at all the hoops you had to jump through. I'm so glad you stood up to them. Congrats!!!
Amen, it's like they don't want a guy to be self-sufficient. Think for himself. Providing for his family.
They want you to be a good little peasant, on your knees, abiding by their edicts, and being dependent on them.

Continue being the stand-up man that you are. I don't fix cars, but enjoy your calm demeanor when watch working on your truck or cars (my family always shared an abundance of 4 letter words when they worked on cars). Congrats on finding a way to help our environment and your wallet. Keep up the good work.

Before my stroke October 12, 2019 I hauled scrap worked 2 jobs, I did it all man. You ain't doing anything wrong . Your videos (auto):are great. & now your scrapping videos are great as well.

Im a PDR tech and many yrs ago I was working at a huge dealership in Tx that had been hit with hail...
Most of the hoods & decks were not feasable to repair , so they were being stacked up for the scrap man...
I got the idea to load up on these hoods & decks, fix them over the winter & sell them on ebay, ect..
I asked the body shop mngr & he said , go for it...
So me & my buddy started loading our trucks after work , and stacking them in our shop ..
Well...unbeknownst to me the General Manager of this dealer was getting a lump of cash every time the scrapper got a load of scrap auto parts...
When he showed up , he was expecting a huge load ...(we took about 50 hoods & 50 decks up to this point)
He was pissed !
But the G.M. wasnt supposed to be skimming $$ from the scrapper..
The scrappers normally take the vehicle parts & the dealer doesnt have to pay a fee every time the dumpster got full...
The G.M. demanded we bring it all back immediately , in spite of the shop mngr telling him , we had permission...
I pulled the G.M. off to the side & told him Id give him some cash & that there was still enough scrap of hoods , decks & collision scrap for the scrapper to make a load...
The G.M. said , give me $400 & we are good !
I paid him the $400...
But what he didnt know was , I was getting $300 to $400 for steel hoods/decks & $500 to $600 for the aluminum hoods/decks...
And, I could fix 3 to 5 hoods a day & about the same for decks...
I spent all fall and winter fixing the hail on these hoods & decks , and selling them as quick as I fixed em...
P.S. we ended up taking 3 loads of hoods/decks & paying the G.M. $400 each time.
That was in 2011 & I sold most of them over the nxt 3/4 years .
Eventually I called a scrap man & he took what we had left over when Covid hit...
For $1200 , we made a very tidy sum.

I was scrappin' in 08 and 09 and I loved it. I want to do it again. I would go out early morning on garbage day in the residential neighborhood to source the metal. I got enough building materials from one restaurant (under renovations) to completely finish the interior of my garage with 5/8 finish plywood. It was awesome.
I love it too. No shame in it at all. The fact that it was thrown away was shameful.
I would watch your scrapping videos glad everything came out alright in court.

Mike, the plywood, if in good condition can be value added. People who do pottery need small, (18" 12"), roughly, pieces to work on. You would need to seal them though, so the water doesn't affect them. You could get quite a few out of a large sheet. 😊
You did the right thing there Mike. Congrats on beating the rap. Some 'Tackleberry's' let stuff go to their heads and want to bust everybody.
I do a bit of scrappin' myself, so I would like to see more videos on this. Trouble is, I end up coming home with more stuff than I took to get rid of. 😁

Interesting and informative video for sure! I am as bad as you at saving stuff, good piece of metal, wood, etc. I pick up free or almost free flat screen Tv's and get them going again and sell them. But mostly have kept family and friends supplied with nice working Televisions going on ten years now and at 73 years old it keeps me busy doing something. So happy you got that mess taken care of. You da man!

I don’t know where ‘To Protect And Serve’ comes in with this officers attitude Mike but I’m so glad that you got to see a grounded, common sense educated DA to help you and see that what you are doing and trying to achieve is actually helping to protect the environment and help you support your family as well as, in no doubt, pay your taxes. Scrapping videos would be cool to watch. I do miss the flip car videos, but I understand with prices the way they are nowadays, it's hard to get a cheap car that isnt completely hammered. I'm loving the truck build, she's looking sweet!! Keep up the good work, Mike!

Glad you could get the charges dropped Mike, as the cops were out of line from the start. It's awesome that business and construction company was willing to help, hopefully a big weight off your mind 🙂 Interesting to see how you go about the scrapping, my brother has done a bit here and there and its definitely something we plan to do more of 👍
Glad to hear things worked out! Prob a good idea to print up some homemade permission slips for when you do get permission. Make it so they just add company name and signature. Don't put dates or locations so they can be used at multiple job sites. Maybe even ask for the address of other job sites when you get permission 👍

Always be sure you have a signed permission paper to be able to show the authorities! Glad it all worked out and the DA worked with you.

Good to hear that you got the charges dropped, to me it makes as much sense to fine someone for scrapping (as long as they aren’t stealing) as it would for arresting someone for sweeping the sidewalk or picking up trash. keep on scrapping, it helps the environment.

Yeah! Thats just crazy! All involved should be all for saving the enviroment! But some cities do have ordinances on dumpster diving witch sucks Ive been in dumpsters when property owners rolled up on me some company recycle materials themself! Glad it all worked out! Take care my friend!
Hi Weird Beard, you made think of the "scrap and pallet man". He has a buyer for pallets. And he always thanks the Lord after getting paid at the scrapyard. Maybe you should do that too, it might keep you out of trouble.

Seems like a stress relieving thing. Beating the crap out of metal! LOL!
I've done a lot of dumpster diving. Can't tell how many good items I've found over the years that I could use one way or the other. Apartment complexes are one of my favorites because people just toss out even new stuff so they don't have to move it.

Thank you for not just going and paying the fines! Next time that cop harasses you , you can explain to him how the false charges were dropped and it might educate him a little and save someone else from the hassle. I scraped for two years to keep the bills paid and never once had police bother me. Now I’m a contractor installing fireplaces for builders and homeowners. Lots of scrap gets thrown in the roll off dumpsters and they don’t mind people taking things out because it costs them to have that stuff hauled to the land fill. It’s a win win win for the scrapper the builder and the roll off buisness.

When I first got married back in the early seventies my wife and I were pretty short on cash for furniture for our apartment. We used to cruise the streets on large trash pick up days and scavenge for dressers, tables, large pieces of wood, etc.
Usually the furniture just needed some glue and screws to be repaired and some paint or stain.to make it nice and usable.
It's amazing what people throw away!
Good news and bad news here in the Mid-Ohio valley! Good news i took a run of old fence into scrap last week and got $60 and pocket change for a truckload (which i put in the gas tank)
bad news that was last week, this week the same truckload i only got 1 cent a pound... $3 and pocket change for a truckload... the local yards here either pay next to nothing or dont take fence anymore right now :(
It would be fun to see you turn that scrap into a go-kart or something. Maybe a small dump trailer. A wind turbine from those fins? Just tossing out ideas but I understand it's just for the scrap.
Me and a friend used to go to about 6 local town dumps (every little town had one) and pick up loads of stuff. One of our best finds was a full acetylene tank. Got lots of scrap steel to use around the farm and even clothes for the kids and farm wagon tires and aluminum cans and bottles etc... Every time something good. Now those dumps are closed and everything is hauled to the city dump miles away. The towns that have dumps have fences and locked gates and cameras. I guess they don't want anyone stealing the stuff they fill those big holes in the ground with! probably a liability thing incase a scrapper gets hurt and sues.

Good on you the only time i have had a problem with dumpster divers is when they pull stuff out and dont put it back
My father in-law scrapped after he retired and did rather well, the good thing is recycling. Good for you 👍
Oh it's great to find out you went through this unscathed and got to keep your money in your pocket I know here in Rochester, New York we have all kind of scrappers with old junkie pickups and they pile those things up high because that's the only income and the authorities around here. Don't bother them at all unless there are posted signs which I've seen before but very rare
