Miller was collecting laundry at 7:57am when the "Battle Stations" alarm sounded. USS West Virginia was heavily damaged by bombs, torpedoes and was on fire.
Being a Black American he wasn’t weapons trained, this did not stop him, he jumped into the fight at the helm of a .50-caliber machine gun blasting away at Japanese planes until he ran out of ammo.
Out of a crew of 1300, Doris Miller was one of the last three men to leave the sinking ship rescuing men as he swam ashore.
His actions defending his country against the Japanese made him perhaps the most famous Black Americans of WWII.

His ship mates signed a petition trying to get him sent to the naval academy as they agreed he deserved the honor of attending America's naval school. He was promoted to cook first class instead. Now there is a ship named after him. Talk about honor, that's a big one

It will be the only super carrier named after an Enlisted Sailor, which is a huge deal considering most are named after presidents.

That’s awesome Chester Nimitz awarded him the Navy cross.
Beautiful story that must be always remembered. The actions of Dory Miller are legendary. The first African American to win the Navy Cross. Well done beautiful work.
Doris Miller answered the call to action going above the call of duty. He is a hero that will always be remembered.
Sadly, he will only be remembered by those of us with a real interest in history who study on our own. Today's schools don't teach true history, but rather a revisionist form of history which would never recognize the heroism and patriotism of this remarkable man. I saw the results of a recent study that found nearly 75% of Americans under 35 years old could not even identify the nations we fought against in WWII. Do you think they remember Doris Miller? Sad, truly sad.
only if his story is told to every new generation.
Hated history in high school, only in college did Im learn that a good historian is a storyteller first and foremost .
Civil war reenacting got me interested in history specially military history...haven't stopped in 25t years.
This video is an excellent tribute to the hero, along with the upcoming US Navy's Aircraft Carrier, USS Dorris Miller.
Race has nothing to do with the fact. That this man was a hero.
Who served his country .
From one to another thank you for your service to our country.
You need to remember that at the time of WW2 racism was very much still a thing hence why the mention of race was brought up because African Americans were still being treated terribly at the time.
@@cursedhawkins1305 I realize what you are saying
What I was saying is that regardless of race
Anyone who jumped into action the way he did is a hero..

And yet how few today would do the same
Unfortunately, it did when it came to awarding him the much-deserved Medal of Honor, he, like many other Black servicemen who performed outstanding feats of bravery in WW2, were all denied that right, by dint of their skin color. The mere fact that there were those in the Navy who lobbied against him receiving the medal speaks volumes.
