    I'm in the UK, a former endurance rider now long-term ill and stuck in bed - I can't tell you how incredibly grateful I am that you made this film. It's as close to riding as I can get, the view through Nico's ears and the sound of his feet on the ground, just wonderful. I've watched it in three parts, it gave me something to look forward to to have an installment to come. You are very right to be proud of your boy - I love that moment at 54 mins where you start to find your sweet spot together and can hear the joy in your voice. He's a wonderful horse, so glad you love and enjoy him. Please make more films!!! with all my best wishes for your future together.

      Thanks for the comment! My computer actually ran out of memory last week, so I had to buy a hard drive to get enough space to get my most recent ride footage uploaded, but I finally got it sorted and am working on publishing soon! We just finished Antelope Island 50-mile ride and I have 3 hours of the ride recorded so I'm hoping for some decent stuff.
      It was interesting to me how different our 2nd ride went. For the first little bit, I actually had to get him 'woken' up a little... I guess my training to work on his calmness paid off and now he is super calm and doesn't care about the other horses so much he can be a little lethargic haha. But then in my 2nd recorded hour for Antelope Island we have some of the most cool footage I've ever gotten riding. I don't do any major editing or cutting, but I still have to do some work to get it ready to post. Keep your eye out it will be soon!
      As far as this video, again thanks! Yeah it was so great when we finally 'clicked' around 54 min mark like you said. Honestly we are getting better and better. Sure do love this horse.
      That's so awesome you used to do endurance in England! Kind of random, but I lived up in Sunderland for a little bit a long time ago. Been a while since I've visited though sadly. Beautiful country :)
      All the best to you, I'll get more footage for you shortly !

      You are welcome, and thanks for the comment! I am actually compiling all of my phone footage as well, of ride camp and stuff, and plan on posting all of that when I can. The one thing I regret not filming is the vet checks. But my goal with this little channel is to film EVERYTHING that I can of my experience and give as much information as possible to new riders (like myself haha) to make it as painless as possible. It's such an amazing sport, but severely under-covered.
      You should definitely give it a shot - I had such an amazing experience. If you haven't already, I would also suggest joining the Green Beans - a beginner endurance group, it has been invaluable to me. Good luck to you, feel free to reach out with any questions! :)

    I loved watching this because I'm interested in doing an LD one day. I wish more people would post honest videos online this, because people like me can learn how to keep their horses calm. They often want to race ahead and be with the "herd" on the trail instead of listening. I think hopping off and calming down was a great idea. I'm sure the more you do, the more he will become calmer and listen more. The terrain is beautiful, thanks for posting!

    • @LiveEndurance
      @LiveEndurance  Před 11 měsíci +2

      Thank you! I am actually working on the footage for my first 50 mile ride at Antelope Island right now; hoping to publish it in the next week or so. Interestingly, with all the training I've been doing with him he was almost too calm haha, and I'm finding in my Antelope ride for the first hour I had to actually wake him up a little. Just an interesting change ;)
      Good luck as you prepare for your own LD! My main advice would be to believe in yourself and your horse, it is actually very doable. Just pick an event and then go for it! However you approach it, all the best to you though. I am actually working on some more content with my experiences of doing some beginner videos, so if you have any questions feel free to reach out to me or follow my other media (I post pretty frequently on my Instagram @names_dane )
      Anyway, once again good luck on your equine and endurance journey; I'm sure you'll do great! :)

      Thanks for your comment! I have several more videos already posted - and interestingly each one had it's own challenge. City of Rocks was our first real ride and we had some 'race brain'. Then Antelope Island I had some issues with getting Nico motivated - so kind of the opposite which I hadn't anticipated. Then Mojave was a challenge/different experience doing the ride almost entirely with another rider/friend.
      I am also going through and compiling the Antelope Island 2024 50 mile footage and our challenge that ride was riding with other people and not getting to close to other horse's butt's haha!
      So each ride I have definitely learned more and become better as a rider. Always a learning process!
      Good luck to you in your riding endeavors, I hope things are going well and Happy Trails! -Cheers

      Thanks for the comment, I appreciate your support! I understand bad experience and confidence building for sure... I have a pretty minimal support system in my equine endeavors and have had to learn just about everything by myself, and as such building confidence has been VERY hard. Even after I bought Nico I didn't really ride for about 8 months because I was nervous. I was shopping for a saddle and tack, but I really used that as an excuse to not ride because of my severe lack of confidence. Anyway I won't preach to you - just saying I know what it's like! Hang in there, and all the best to you! I plan on posting a lot more videos with other ride camp and the vet in process, and I will also be posting tons of stuff with my training regime. I really want to just get as much as I can so people can see how great this sport is, and the amazing bonding w/ our equine companions :) All the best to you, don't hesitate to reach out with any questions!

    This is by far one of the best endurance ride videos on youtube. Pure rae and unedited footage. Almost like going a ride your self. So many others cut their videos in to 10 second pieces from one thing to another and it drives me nuts flicking back and for. I really appreciate your effort into makeing this video and uploading it. Is it ok to share this video? I know a lot of people in teh horse world who would love to watch this. You are more than welcome to share this video or any of my posted content - you have my permission.
      And thanks for your thoughts. My goal in sharing these is to not just show the 'rosey colored perfect horses' for 10 seconds, but to show the good and the struggles; so people know what it's REALLY like and also so people don't feel so alone in their own struggles and successes.
      I will be at City of rocks this year and probably next year. If there is an endurance ride that I am going to that you want to come ride or volunteer at; please don't hesitate to contact me directly and I would be happy to meet you! Please for your own safety you don't have to tell me where you live - but I hope to one day be able to ride 'accross the pond' as well ;)

    I am new to Endurance May I ask why you were walking in the beginning and someone else trotted? Is it better to walk?

    • @LiveEndurance
      @LiveEndurance  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Nope, not necessariyl 'better', but rather it is just 'different'. This particular ride video was my first ever ride (I have since done other rides and posted them; each one is kind of different!). So for this ride - it is also my horse's first ride. I wanted him to equate ride camp and going to an actual endurance ride as 'calm' and 'controlled'. I didn't want his first thought to be 'oh we are at a new environment, everytime I ride in a place that's now, I got to go fast'.
      So the main thing I think you should ask yourself for every ride is what is your goals, what's best for you, and what's best for your horse. My 3rd endurance ride with Nico I just did at Mojave, we did kind of walk/trot out of the start, but that's after i knew he could do it calmly without loosing his head so to speak.
      So basically, I don't think that doing one thing or the other is necessarily 'good' or 'better' - Rather I think of things in terms of what my goals are and what's best for my horse.
      I hope that helps, feel free to ask anything other questions!

I've really liked this bridle though, and in the future will probably get more colors from them :) The saddle is a Specialized Ultralight. If you get a chance to sit on one before you buy is always nice, but my personal experience has been extremely positive. I personally feel very secure and I love how light it is. Also you can customize it to your horse's back. It's really been a great saddle for us! They do have a 'trial fitting program' as well, it takes a long time with shipping and stuff, but is very cheap and non-committal and is a great option if you are unsure what you want.

    I actually really like the long-form unedited footage. Yours is much smoother than what I got on my first (only) LD in 2019. I had a GoPro Hero 4 and the footage was *rough* and gave my mother motion sickness watching it lol.
    Love the blue on Nico's bay coat.

    • @LiveEndurance

      I won't be going to Midnight/midday rider this year, just because it's my first year of doing endurance and I'm keeping my rides within a 6 hour driving distance (I live in south western Wyoming), and that one is about 12 hours away, but I honestly might do it next year! I sure love getting up to WA when I can, beautiful up there! Are you doing the ride?
      Once I get a chance I'll do an edited version of this ride, but I tend to agree that I personally like the long footage, it's just fun to experience the whole ride. I'm trying to think of ways I can get footage of the entire ride next time so I don't lose portions. Honestly the parts where the battery died was some of my best riding and some of the prettiest parts. Plus I want to record vet check next time as well, as I think that can be very educational for people watching these.

      @@LiveEndurance Belated response, lol
      I'm not sure if I'll get to the ride this year. I've been wanting to, but I'm not entirely sure on logistics [I don't have a license, and that's a long drive for someone to tote me and one or both of my horses, though significantly shorter than yours would be, my goodness lol], and my guys aren't conditioned enough for 25 miles yet, though they might be if I buckle down with them. My stallion *might* be up for an intro by then, but it's iffy. lol [There's also the logistics of stallion containment. I know he's well behaved at home, but a ride atmosphere with many pretty ladies, strange geldings and possible other stallions around is an unknown for us as far as I've had him.]
      My mare could probably do the 25 night ride if I get my rear in gear and get her going again. Hard to leg up two horses at once and riding buddies are hard to come by that are interested in conditioning rides and will make set plans to ride and follow through >.>

    I think you did great and your horse too. You both were anxious in the beginning but found your rhythm together. My horses are barefoot and it was great to see how well Nico handled those roads. I wonder if the reason why he kept lowering his head near the end was because he was thirsty and looking for somewhere to drink or something else? Some horses are constantly smelling other horses manure! 😅 BTW you're a very gracious and polite rider! Thanks for sharing.

      Thanks for your comment and thoughts! In retrospect, I definitely know and realize how nervous I was at the beginning, even if I was trying to not be haha.
      It very well could be that he is lowering his head because of thirst, though the more I've gotten to know him, the more I think that it's just his personality. He is such a funny guy and get's easily bored so he likes to sniff everything. Even at a decent trot I find that he is so fit that he gets bored and wants to explore haha. Though I couldn't say for sure, but we're figuring it out more and more.

      Haha, Right you are! I must say though, I'm glad I rode him like this for our first ride. When we did Antelope Island 50 miler a few months later, he knew the game much better and was much calmer (almost too calm - you'll know what I mean if you see the first portion). But during that ride he got to stretch out and run quite a bit; and did it much more calm and composed. He did the entire 50 miles basically alone too which is hard for a horse; but he is getting exceptionally good at it!
      So again, yes you are right; but this ride turned out to be a great learning experience for us both and I'm glad I held him back to get his brain to learn that 'racing' for racing sake is not the answer, and now he does amazing at running along calmly :)

  • @Gingerwalker.
    @Gingerwalker. Před 10 měsíci +1

    It is understandably very frustrating riding a horse that is acting like that. It is both mentally and psychically wearing. Your being calm helps to a point. But you can't beat yourself up for being frustrated with his unwillingness to settle in for that long. It can be dangerous. Have you tried putting the horse on raspberry leaves? It makes them less looky and skittish. My mare's head is on a swivel without it. With it she does her job 90 percent better. PS what bridle is that?

      Oh, I just saw your last sentence. That is a Biothane Sidepull I got from TwoHorsetack.com. It is some kind of 'western-ish' version of a sidepull with the attachment points more under the chin, which is SUPPOSEDLY supposed to help a little bit to teach with neck reining/ riding with one hand? I don't know about that, but I do know I have really enjoyed this side pull, it looks good, and rides good.

    Are these just group rides or are they races?

    • @LiveEndurance
      @LiveEndurance  Před rokem +1

      Great question. It is technically a race, though many people live by the motto 'to finish is to win'. A strong emphasis is placed on ensuring the horse goes through the mileage fully healthy. This was my first race so I purposely held back as much as I could early because I don't want to get my horse to have 'race brain' but rather teach him to be focused. Most of the time people don't really try to race until a horses 2nd or 3rd year, to ensure they are not only fit enough but have the tendon and bone strength to compete safely, as in general you can condition a horses lungs and muscles much faster than bone/tendons/ligaments. Many riders pride themselves on having what's called a 'decade' horse, basically a horse that is healthy and cared for good enough to race for 10+ years. TLDR, yes it is a race but myself and probably a decent portion of the other participants were treating it as a training opportunity and litmus test for their horses :) hope that makes sense feel free to ask any other questions!

But suffice to say that yes I do let him open up in training. This particular race shown was our first real'race' and I was holding him back mostly to help him keep from developing a race brain type of attitude. When he settles down and connects with me -which he is getting better and better at- he is allowed and encouraged to go faster. On the second loop of our 50 mile race we just completed there is some good footage of him just running on a nice loose rein and being very happy, so feel free to check it out when I have a chance to download the footage and post it here in a week or so. So you are totally right that I'm not a great rider, there are definitely other riders that could sit him better at a run or faster paces, but my goal is and always will be to develop connection. The more connection l connected we become the more he dictate the speed because I know he is running fast but also safe and in a good state of mind, which truthfully is not seen much in this video, I guess you see it more in the second loop after he's calmed down. But in the first loop with all the excitement and new things going on, I most definitely held him back.
      Tldr, I believe I have a great relationship with my horse and while I definitely can become much better of a rider we are improving together as the time. Saying that any constructive criticism viewers as yourself have well always be appreciated, so thanks again for your comment and feel free to check my other and future content to get more of a feel for how my horse and I do together and if your ever near Utah/WY at a endurance ride feel free to judge us in person :)

      I think your horse can be very very very very happy to have you. You are wonderful with him. So impressive to see. So I totally disagree with the comment.

      @@vanMaanenvakantiehuizen Thank you :) Looking back to City of Rocks from today, I still can't believe how far we have come. Nico has definitely made me a better rider and horseman; and I'd like to think that I've helped him be a better horse! Funny thing, like any human relationship; we both get annoyed at each other haha, but I can confidently say that I love him to death and always strive to do what's best for him; and I'm pretty sure he likes me too (in his own horse-way haha!). Cheers!
