Simply not true, Tracy Austin beat Martina 13 times including a run of 4 straight set wins and won 10 out of their 16 matches in another run. Austin also won both of their meetings at the US open
Arantxa had a poor head to head with Martina. I guess it's because she didn't have the weapons or the kind of return of serve that would have put Martina on the back foot.
I think it had to do with Arantxa's serve. She didn't get free points and couldn't serve to get herself out of trouble the way Steffi, Martina and Monica were able to
On the other hand, Sanchez fared well against Navratilova on clay. It was unfortunate that almost every other meeting was on fast hard courts where Sanchez was clearly not on the advantage. Unlike Martinez who won a lot of free matches in Rome.
@@williamadams5384 I think the returns played a bigger part because she loved to build long rallies based on the return, not plain one-two punches. Her serve was decent. But she did fare quite well against many other volleyers.
But she also hit the ball high over the net with top spin and Martina could pick off the volley easily . Arantxa severely challenged Martina from 89 to 93 but nav was too good on fast surfaces. Arantxa needed more power on her returns to beat her like Graf and Seles
The ONLY baseliners who truly matched Martina were Evert, Graf and Seles.
