  • Hey, remember that bible game I joked about seven years ago? Turns out it's still around! It's a smaller game which only has annual set releases, but it's still puttering along. I actually met the guy who designed the game, we had a nice chat, and he tossed me some stuff to show off.
So, how does a game on Biblical Adventure fare in the face of more modern games? Let's take a look and see!

If any of you run a TCG or PR for a TCG and want to see my take on your game, you're probably better off contacting me through Twitter: twitter.com/kohdok
If you want me to review a game, but aren't a brand rep, it might be better to either reach out to them or find out how I would reach out to them, as I do have limited budget and that whole Quarantine thing.

Do you take requests? If you need a topic for one day: the rise and fall of (my personal, favorite card game--up until MTU) VS System could make a good video. I'm sad that there isn't a continuation community like you have for V:TES, Starwars, or Star Trek (there's a discord but it's not super active...which makes sense because those last few sets...yeesh). I think it's a great story about the problem of trying to make a "pro" card game too soon.

Was a youth pastor in the late 90s, and held a Redemption tournament. I actually called Rob Anderson's office for tournament tips since I hadnt done one before, and he answered the phone, we chatted for a long time, and he mailed me several parcels of video games, comics, and card packs to use for prizes. Without cost. My kids had an epic event. Rob really believes in what he is producing, from his heart.

Not the least of which is the endless excuses followers make, instead of just accepting something might be wrong. Your response is an example of that. A mild one, but if this conversation continues your excuses will get more and more obvious, and reflect ever worse on your character as you make them.

Didn't stick with it to any major degree, but I'm glad it's still alive and kicking, and the fact they're able to make more cards every so often from source material like the Bible is honestly super impressive. Banding was/is a neat mechanic. In addition to the 2+ creatures moving like one, their controller ALSO gets to choose how damage is assigned to them, and it doesn't need to follow the battle conga. Like, if you attack or block with a pair of 1/2 creatures banded together and the band ends up against your opponent's 2/2, you can assign 1 point of damage to each of your creatures and neither will die.

I just have to comment on this. I have been playing Redemption for around 15 years. It is a pretty good game, and while it definitely has it's issues, the direction the game is going seems to be a good one. And the game can get much more complicated than what was shown in this video. And the game does take a bit of knowledge of the Bible, but aside from Testament there are very few cards that require you to know something not explicitly on the card and most of them are old (and while still playable often not the best option).
If I have to say the biggest problem with the game is that there has been a truckload of complexity and power creep throughout the game's history, some of it has been good, but the main format got very close to being broken, and that forced a couple of erratas and bannings. And the finer details of the game can be a bit difficult to figure out (I'm a rules guru and I have had difficulty, but it has gotten a lot better from the worst it's been).
There's also a couple of other formats, the game supports more than 2 player games (we used to have 10+ player games, but those games can get a bit absurd) and there's 2 different main formats, T1 which was what Kohdok described and T2, which is a bigger game where you have a 100+ card deck (and consequently 14+ Lost Souls) and you can have more copies of some cards with special abilities in your deck and you have to have equal good and evil in your deck, you also play to 7 Redeemed Souls and there are a few other minor rules changes, all of which makes for longer and (in my opinion) more strategic and interesting games.

For a long time redemption was the only tcg my parents would let me play. I absolutely loved it as a kid. I played it years later and it wasn’t a bad game. To my understanding banding still rules the meta game. Or at least it did a few years ago. Wild to think this game is one of the longest running TCGs.

I have a TON of these cards! I enjoy playing competitively and have even gotten into creating my own cards. Once you get the more risky deck building cards involved it gets really fun. I highly recommend it to anyone thinking of getting involved.

This game seems absolutely fascinating. I remember being encouraged to try it as a young kid when one of my mother's extremely religious friends got upset that I was allowed to play Yugioh, and I've been rather frustrated with the lack of quality of most christian media, but this seems genuinely high quality.

As someone who has played a LOT of different CCGs, I'm impressed that an independant game like this one is so well explained, accessible to novices and fully playable right out of the box. I still have nightmares about the incomplete, unplayable mess that was Animayhem.

There was a game from latin america that was really popular back in the day. Its name was "Mitos y leyenda" (which obviusly translates to "myths and legends"). It was made by a
chilean company called "Salo". It was really popular back in the mid-aughts in South America and even Mexico (that's where I'm from). Maybe that is something you could be interested in.

Yep, the game is really a lot of fun - especially with the latest sets! And Jesus has a card in the game: It is the ultimate Son of God Dominant! :)
Also one great thing to know is: Redemption and every card printed for it can be played for free online!!! :) - Well the client (LackeyCCG) is sth. that needs to get used to, but it is for free.
There are also several points for more information: A forum (www.cactusforums.com/index.php?action=forum), Discord (discord.gg/87Px6D), Blog (landofredemption.com/) and lots of additional videos in CZcams!

Since you only really touched the first set, you never got to see some of the more interesting card arts that were tie-ins with other Christian media such as the Archangels (the Saga) comics and the Angel Wars cgi films. Was pretty rad to my young mind and seems pretty ambitious for the time.

I cannot be the only one wondering what the tournament scene for this game looks like.
The game itself looks great though, I like the fact it has lore on the card (something I wish Yugioh did), and the Art ain’t half bad.

At least when I was looking around for tournaments about half a decade ago, it was a lot of church hosted events of 10-100 people, some multi-day stuff and all pretty personable affairs and less like giant cons or anything.
Never did find a store playing it sadly. Nor was able to set anything up with my church.

Banding is actually kinda busted in MTG. While it makes it easier to stop a single attack you get to chose how damage is distributed to your own creatures. So if you attack with a banded 6/6 and a 1/1 and it's blocked by a 7/7, you can have your 1/1 take all 7 damage, kill their blocker, and keep your 6/6. For blocking it lets you distribute damage among multiple blockers which normally your opponent gets to chose allowing for the same tricks on the defense. It allows you to win combat where normally your stronger creature or multiple of your creatures would die but instead you trade favorably and keep a stronger board presence than your opponent.

    • @bradleyhoward9638
      @bradleyhoward9638 Před rokem

Damage is required to be assigned at a minimum of lethal, I never realized you could assign more than lethal, I thought it automatically went to the next creature. Especially because with trample you could just assign all the damage to the lowest toughness creature, bleed over the rest and deal none to any more blockers. Are you sure banding let's you decide to put more than lethal damage on a creature?

FYI "The son of man" and "The son of God" are both Jesus. Christ and Messiah both mean "the anointed one". "The Angel of the Lord" is God and debatably is specifically preincarnate Jesus. Each part of the trinity has plenty of titles so there's plenty of unique card names that could be used to refer to the same thing. Satan also has a lot of names but I made this comment in response to several God cards I saw in this video.

Meanwhile Red brigade and Evil Gold brigade are no longer supported and all the good cards from older sets got a reprint in terms of the Roots set. Also there are new starter decks around plus in the newer sets card borders indicate the brigades of the particular cards.

I still own a big ol' box of these from the late '90s. Played it a few times before my pastor was all like, "Augh! It's too much like Magic!" and the five other people in my church who played quietly lost interest.
The game's not terrible, but it's not great, either. Certain card interactions are sketchy, and building decks with the right balance of heroes and villains can be tricky. But the part that really bummed me out was the lack of a "limiting factor," like the mana system in Magic. A player who was lucky enough to draw into their strongest hero on the opening hand could just slap it down on turn one and pretty much dominate the game. That said, I'm glad a game like this exists, and that its publishers have been able to improve the design of the game over the years. Now to dust off my old cards and find an opponent... 😅
