  • Important things you need to know to increase your chances of catching a monster sea trout
    From late June, the sea trout begin to migrate up the Mörrum river to spawn - and it can be big fish. There’s a reason why fly fishermen come from all over the world in hope to catch one of these large, shy specimen.
    The best chance of catching one of these monsters is to fish in the evening but if the weather is cloudy or rainy there is also a fair chance during the day. "Rainy weather is sea trout weather" as we say in Sweden.
    During autumn fishing in the Mörrum river, the ultimate catch is a sea trout over 10 kg taken on the southern stretch, which is the stretch closest to the Baltic Sea. If you catch a fish here, you know it's in top condition because it hasn't been in the river for long.
    I have been fishing the river for over 35 years now and certainly have experienced many unforgettable moments. Both in terms of fish I caught as well as fish I lost. However, this fish was exceptional and I will absolutely remember this catch for as long as I live.
    It really was a rare occasion. A monster sea trout - and a witness! Usually I land the fish myself but this time I had the help of my eldest son Martin, himself a very skilled fly fisherman.
    It was truly amazing to be able to share this incredible catch with him.

    Great video and amazing fish!! 😱 I would have one question, where do you think it might be a good spot for mid May salmon fishing, I've heard that usually they go to the up part of the river from June

      Hi, In mid-May, everyone wants to fish in pool 1. Other desirable pools on the southern stretch are 2, 4, 12 and 16. On the northern stretch, pool 17 can be an interesting option. Personally, however, I avoid these pools because there are so many people that you often have to queue. For pool 1, the waiting time can be several hours. /John

      @@DrJohnTheAnglerJohnHedberg thank you so much! I was reading that might be crowded over those pools, however I'm going during the week and I'll stay several days, so I might give it a try. And what about you upper part? Any chance to catch a salmon in there? Or is too early in the season for Harnas?

    What a fantastic fish and well done on landing it in that fast current. My son ( from the UK ) now lives in Sweden and next time I visit I’d love to take him fishing on The Mörrum . Do you have any contact details for the beats so that I could arrange some fishing on the river ? Best Wishes and tight lines Danny 🎣

      Hi, You can look here: www.sveaskog.se/morrum/. September is the best month to fish the river. Or May if you want to try to catch a fresh run salmon. It's very hard to even get a bite then though. /John

    What is the best period to catch sea trout at the Mörrum?

      Hi, The best chance is in September, but August can also be good if the water temperature is below 20 degrees. /John

    Thanks for the video, very nice. I'm fishing the Mörrumsån next month and it will be first time fishing there. Hoping to catch sea trout or salmon in autumn, or otherwise just enjoy the river. For the lines, would you just use a floating spey line and directly attach the 0.40 tippet (it's without any taper, right?). Or is the line set-up more complicated than that? Also, I was thinking of bringing a net to land potential fish. Is that a good idea?

    • @DrJohnTheAnglerJohnHedberg
      @DrJohnTheAnglerJohnHedberg  Před 11 měsíci

      Hi,
      No, I nearly always use a polyleader (fast sink) even when i fish with a floating line. The best allround setup for the autumn fishing in Mörrum is, I think, a float/intermediate line (multi tippet system), a fast sink polyleader and monofilament tippet (1,5-2 m). A float/sink2 line will also do well if you don't like to fish with a polyleader. /John

      @@DrJohnTheAnglerJohnHedberg Tack så mycket! That sound simple enough. Do you have an estimate how deep below the surface your fly usually is when the salmon take it? The presentations seems to look a little like jigging (with a spinning rod), something I'd do in my local river for Zander. Another question, do you try to hide (visually) from the fish?

    • @DrJohnTheAnglerJohnHedberg
      @DrJohnTheAnglerJohnHedberg  Před 11 měsíci

      Hi,
      I usually fish in slightly faster pools, so roughly 20-40 cm down i guess. No, I'm not hiding, but I'm trying to wade calmly and carefully. /John

    • @DrJohnTheAnglerJohnHedberg
      @DrJohnTheAnglerJohnHedberg  Před rokem +1

      Hi, Fluorocarbon is much less stretchy than monofilament and it shrinks the margins. One mistake and the tippet breaks. /John

    You cant teach people to catch a 10 kilo seatrout, the person need to fish where 10 kilo sea trout exist and need a bit of luck to make one take the fly. That's it.

    • @DrJohnTheAnglerJohnHedberg
      @DrJohnTheAnglerJohnHedberg  Před 7 měsíci

      Come on now! Of course you can! It is also one of the pieces of advice: Fish in a water that is proven to hold large sea trout. You also have to have the right stuff so that you can take the chance if it comes. Flourcarbon and barbless hooks should not be used.

    • @MrKveite1
      @MrKveite1 Před 7 měsíci

      LOL, you do know Uk and canada and Alaska are barbless only for salmon and trout right and we use flurocarbon for 200 kg plus halibut here in Norway. Now personally i have only landed 2800ish salmon here in norway with a top of 132 cm but i DO use flurocarbon and dont have any problems with it what so ever but as the noob i am i dont bother to argue with a pro like yourself so i will let you read this and that's it. i will just watch your videoes and become a pro like you are even if it will take me many many years to get to your lvl of skill and knowledge.

      Well, once again, we have different experiences. If it works for you to fish salmon with flourocarbon, go for it. I stick to monofilament as far as the salmon/sea trout are concerned. Then again, I use oversized fluorocarbon tippets when fishing for pike and zander so I'm not completely rabid about that material.
