  • The place names in Australia - or more specifically, the Indigenous place names - contain deep history and wisdom that anyone who understands their meanings can access. Len helps us understand and value our Indigenous place names and shows us why and how this names continue to give insight into the land we share. With a background in literature and communications, Len has dedicated much of his career to recording and reclaiming Aboriginal language and culture. Through his former role as Australian Research Council Chief Investigator at the School of Indigenous Studies at the University of Western Australia, Len completed several studies to help preserve the Nyungar language. His work included creating a public database of 25,000 Nyungar words for places in the South-West of Australia and the first Australian bilingual Aboriginal Wikipedia.
In 2022, Len was acknowledged as a WA Nominee Local Hero in the Australian of the Year Awards. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
