Homemade Side Steps/Rock Sliders | Jeep CJ7 Build Part 5

- In this video we fabricate some bolt-in rock rails for our CJ that also have a side step. These steps could be made to fit any kind of Wrangler (YJ, TJ, JK) or Jeep in general. The plans for this Jeep is to do a full restoration, including a Chevy 350 and manual transmission swap. Awesome to see a couple of young people jump off in to the deep end and do all this work themselves.
You should have cut your wedge out of the inside of the bend, then you simply bend your tube to close the gap and weld her up.
I really enjoyed the build gave me a lot of ideas for my TJ. There aren't many videos like this one out there mainly just people buying premade sliders and bolting them on.

Good build guys. Keep up the good work! Love seeing young men working on their Jeeps and Stangs. Nice shop! I wish I had a shop like that when I was working on my CJ at your age. All I had was a gravel driveway, an old oxy acetylene, and the clouds for a roof. I think I'll do a similar build, but I will either sleeve through the frame or use U bolts if they will fit. Cheers.
I think the best advice I can give you is this old saying. "There is never time to do it right yet there's always time to do it over"
I like the idea of using washers instead of messing with angles, I think I’ll to that on my K10

your ment to cut a V in the pipe and close the gap to get the bend -
not cut a I and open it up and use more pipe as a filler....that's 2 welded joins now which is now 2 spots that can fail
Tack a lot! Then weld once it's in place. Grind everything!
Need to turn your amps up your running to cold and lower your wire speed a tad and with the leg u usually cut a v and close the gap up and instead of drilling holes in frame you should clamp slider to the chassis plate back and front 2 bolts top 2 bolts bottom

That looks great, but what happens when you pull the body and put new bushings in?
You should have put pipe in the frame around the bolts so the frame didn't crush in
If it flexes with your weight on it then it will bend up and bust the sill when the cars whole weight is on it
I would have used plates with ubolts.
I think I might have worked the frame with body off first to insure it was strong and in good shape.
You can't get the measurements from rail to body with frame only.
Those mounting bolts look a little light :/ You should probably use high tensile bolts so they don't break.

these would be "steps" real sliders are welded on and will support the vehicle when thrown onto them on and angle.
I would think you could have not cut a "V" at all... just cut that angle at the mounting plate.

What is the diameter of the pipes and thickness.
Why not just cut the ends of the bars that attatch to the plat at the frame cut it at an angle instead of the pie cut

What welder do you have?
Looks like a TSC Hobart. I don't know the amps but it seems to be welding very well.
No offense but you’ve got much to learn about welding and metal working. Google welding techniques sometime, there’s a lot of great vids on here that if you really take the time to watch and practice you’ll really benefit and learn from

I would far sooner see a couple of young guys build a Jeep to their liking than see it rust away as some old man’s one day project. They may not be professional but they aren’t hacks.
I can't....I just wasn't 10 minutes of my life. Pie cut? How about cut the shit the right way and actually give it some structural strength! In fairness...first time? Not terrible but definitely remember that the strongest geometric shape is a tri angle.
