  • Before our journey heading to the South Island - Södermalm, we encountered the Changing of the Guard ceremony at the Royal Palace. This storied tradition, originating in 1523, showcases a formal parade of the Royal Guards, accompanied by a military band. Especially during the summer, the ceremony reaches its peak of grandeur, featuring horse-mounted guards and an elaborate musical performance.
The name 'Södermalm' translates to "South Island." In Swedish, "Söder" means "south," while "malm" refers to a type of terrain, typically indicative of sandstone or sandy soil. Södermalm itself radiates a relaxed and creatively vibrant atmosphere. The district is sprinkled with art galleries, quaint cafés, and the notable Fotografiska, a contemporary photography gallery located in a converted waterfront factory. Surrounded by lush greenery, Nytorget Square and the lively Hornstull area are studded with traditional Swedish eateries and fashionable brunch spots.
