It's our electoral state-based federal electoral system. Republicans haven't won the popular vote for President in decades, but they win by electors representing states. Most Americans can't stand this BS. Our system is unrepresentative in other ways, too, such as two Senators per state. Montana gets two Senators. California gets two Senators even though they have probably sixty times the population. And then there is gerrymandering and campaign funding from the wealthy supported by the Supreme Court, and on and on and on. But we the people are mostly sane.
BTW, the number one reason this is happening is racism. White people will soon no longer be a majority in the US, and that has the predictable resistance. I wonder what Australia would be like if the white population was headed toward under 50%. Think your country would be so peaceful then?
