And for voles, We have 2 stray cats that a neighbor had trap, neuter and release. They are excellent control of voles. They catch the darn things and come and show them to me.
I've always had good luck with the spiked trap, but it was a little different design than the one you showed, but hey, whatever works! It takes daily diligence to check/reset it, but it was effective. I kinda like the scissor trap and seems MUCH safer to set. The advice I got from an older gentleman near me was to go after their food source and told me that moles largely go after grubs. I obviously didn't want any pesticide in my garden, but I do apply a product annually now to the rest of my lawn around the garden and have only seen occasional moles since over the last 20+ years (maybe one every few years). Seeing a mole tunnel in the yard when I mow acts as an early warning, and I get the trap out before the tunnel gets extensive. They always come into the yard from an adjacent wooded area next to my property. I still see a few grubs in my garden when tilling or planting, but it's like the moles haven't been 'led there' by the food source. You are definitely on the right track with killing them though... Have your kids push down any existing hill runs thru the yard, then watch which hills are active to know where to place the traps. Good Luck!!! Groundhogs are good at that!! We have one (or two) at my parent's who will take 1 bite out of almost ripe tomatoes and just move on down the line... SO aggravating 😡
I've caught voles in early spring with just a standard mouse trap baited with peanut butter and bird seed. Might be harder in late spring summer when they have more food available.
I've had some success with this method too - at least more than anything else I've tried. I used standard wooden mouse traps baited with peanut butter and/or bird seed. I moved primarily to bird seed because the peanut butter can attract ants which seems to keep the voles away from the trap. Black sunflower seems to work particularly well because you can wedge it into the gap on the "bait bar" found on most traps, making it harder for them to steal. ID the tunnels, dig out an area to place the trap in the tunnel and cross your fingers. Be sure to leave enough space for the bar to clear any surrounding soil or you'll get a lot of misses. Also, I would generally place something like a plant pot over the hole to block out light which might alert the buggers - not sure if this helps or not. And yeah, be prepared to set quite a few.
I saw a video by NHHosta, to use caster oil. After 3 applications of caster oil, the mole family invading my property moved on. I will continue to use the oil in any problem area created by tunneling invaders. Thank you for the videos you create.😊
@@robingalloway3541 you can get bottle castor oil in big box store. I dump that and squeeze of dish soap into my 2 gallon water can. I make circle of it around my garden area after i do spring garden prep.
The scissor traps, is the best, but I find out when you got one dead mole in your trap,you have to clean your traps with soap or lysol, because the mole seem to be able to smell ,and they will go around ,I caught this spring 5 moles. With this trap, it works,
I watched both of your videos on moles. We have the same problem, they are everywhere. Like you I don't care that they have tunnels all over my yard but my gardens, really... they can do so much damage. I hate killing animals and too its my last resort. When they continue to tunnel under my whole row of cucumbers and push all my mature plants right out of the ground and instead of tunneling around my tomatoes they seem to tunnel right to them. We too have literally tried everything, I started with the sonic sound wave stakes and they did nothing. After trying every trap out there the best one we found too was the scissor trap. Last year after I thought I maybe had 2 or 3 moles in my garden I found I had more like 12. We have a pool in the backyard and the pump and filter are rather close to the garden, I will say that when the pump was running mole traffic was down. So vibration helped, it didnt work alone but helped. If you ever get good info on getting rid of squirrels or chipmunks please make a video. I can't seem to keep them out of my strawberries. They not only ate every ripe berry they ate every white one too. All that work for nothing it makes you want to cry. Thanks for the informative videos!
For Moles, Gophers and Voles, I recommend using traps from Trapline Products. When I bought this property in western WA I had a very serious mole issue with my backyard looking like some weird alien landscape dotted with many mole hills. The Trapline mole trap is the only solution that works consistently. Unlike those above ground traps, Trapline traps are inserted into the tunnels which means that eve if the tunnel is very deep, they will still work. They are also relatively cheap individually so you can buy a few dozens and basically turn your yard into a mole trapping minefield. Doing this makes the math work in your favor, with the entire yard now turned into a minefield of traps, any moles navigating the area will have to be lucky every single time it uses a tunnel while you only have to lucky once for the mole to hit the trap. If you do use this trap, leave the traps in the tunnels even after the initial mole has been eliminated (you'll know when no more new mole hills appear). Moles are territorial so once the original mole has died, a new one might investigate and move into this new territory and there's a good chance it'll hit one of your traps too. I sometimes leave dozens of these traps in my yard for the whole spring and end up with 3 or more moles skeletons when I finally dig them up.

We have the mole windmills. We got ours at harbor freight. Sometimes they work, sometime not. Will have to try the scissor trap. Thats for sharing. From S. E. Ohio, have a wonder day

Milky Spore-gets rid of grubs and no more moles. We’ve had spike traps and scissors traps and they work, but why not just get rid of what they are after-grubs. I’ve used juicy fruit gum and it appeared to work because the next day it was laying up out of the tunnel. We had a drought year then also and not sure if that had any correlation. I mentioned before we use rat traps for gophers and voles. Bait for gophers was celery leaf and voles peanut butter. We use an open cage over peanut butter to keep birds, ect away. We never ever had a vole until last winter when I seen the tunnels on top of soil under snow. They ate spring bulbs-all of the blue star flower type. They are all gone
As with any pesky varmints, get rid of the food source and the varmint will move on. I use GrubX pellets in a grass seed distributor once every 5 years and voles, chipmunks and moles haven't come back. I use all through my yard and around the outside of my garden, never inside. Chipmunks are omnivores so they like grubs too!
I've tried the grub products (and do they may have slightly helped), but the problem is there are still plenty of earthworms for them to nosh on... and I definitely don't want to get rid of those! I've been told that earthworms are a mole's favorite food! Though I'm tempted to double down on the grub products given your results with the voles & chipmunks- thanks!
@@GrowfullywithJenna like I said, the critters we had were so destructive! I only use the grub x around the perimeter of the garden because I really focus on growing things organically. If you keep the rodents down you'll have less snakes too because that takes care of THEIR food supply. Good luck my dear!
I used solar vibrate things I stuck in the ground 2 years ago. It got completely rid of the moles. I have no more problems with them. Now I have problems with squirrels and rabbits. I was mowing the grass this morning and scared a way 5 baby bunny's. Hopefully, they go next door.
Hi Jenna. Voles tend to run along set pathways in our garden, so my husband cut 15 inch lengths of 4” diameter pvc pipe and then split those in half length-wise to create little tunnels. He then places 2 mouse traps on the ground end-to-end with the baited ends facing away from each other and places a tunnel over top of them. When the voles run their path in either direction, they run into the tunnel and right to the bait. We’ve been using this method for years and it works great. Moles don’t like our shale soil so thankfully we don’t have them. Chipmunks are infrequent but we use a have-a-heart trap for them and then relocate to woods a few miles away.
@@frankt7521 Yes, they are placed above ground. Voles run above ground as well as burrow underground to feed on roots, etc. The voles run above ground along the outside edges of our wooden raised beds and compost bin and then have entry holes into the beds. We don’t have dogs, so can’t comment on that although we do have raccoons, skunks and neighbors’ cats visit the yard and they’ve never bothered them. You could try placing arched stakes down over each end of the pipe?
Have you tried blood meal? It is a mole deterrent. You could either add it at the drip line of each plant And water it in or or work it into the first 2 to 3 inches of your soil before you plant your starts. There is organic blood Meal available in 25 pound bags on Amaazon to cover larger areas of your garden. and it has a 2 to 3 months release time, so you don't have to work it in every few weeks.
In my country it is recommended to plant springstar, Kaiser's crown or caper spurge around where they dug up, because the smell of their roots disgust them. I don't know how different american moles are but if someone feels like experimenting, you can give it a try 😂😂😂
Have an attachment that fits on the exhaust of a tractor or other vehicle. You attach a garden hose to it and stick the other end of thee hose in the varmint hole as far as you can. Put dirt over the area where the hose goes in the ground, sealing off the hole. Running the vehicle for 1/2 hour or so, as done a good job ending the problem.
That is one method I've not tested. Lots of folks on my old video said that this worked for them. I'm not sure I want to run a bunch of exhaust into my garden, but may be worth trying for folks who want to get rid of them in their lawn.
They are absolutely adorable! I suppose that's why I've been to slack on them so far. But my last straw was when I watched one steal my strawberries and sit, not 5 feet away from me, look at me and take a huge bite 😂

Thank you! We only get them in the lawn currently, but we’re always expanding our garden, and not all planting spaces are raised beds (with a hardware cloth base, of course!). I’ve been wanting to find some sort of “spinner” for the garden but they all seem to be trash…this windmill will be the perfect dual purpose gadget. And thanks also for the info on the trap. We’ve had negative results with several, so now I know where to turn if we need them. Looking forward to info on chipmunks…they run amok in our garden. My husband resorts to lethal methods that involve a bucket and sunflower seeds 😬 I stopped feeding the birds in hopes of reducing populations but I don’t think it’s done much.
I've tried the sunflower bucket trick and caught a few... but I'm starting to suspect we've just got too many other food sources for them. I'll have to be more diligent about going after them in the fall/winter. And I very much appreciate your second comment-- it's really frustrating 😣
I had a chow/shepard mix dog she took care of my moles. She would sniff them out and dig them up. And roll on them. But moles love grubs. Get rid of grubs, moles leave.
There is a certain cut height for grass that deters grubs, so therefore keeps the armadillo, voles and such away from the lawn. Dogs are great molers/ volers. Of course both these options are not suited for gardens.😂
I remember Jerry Baker talking about putting human hair in the tunnels. 😂 The biggest thing is identifying the main runs, which you covered. I have also had luck with the Nash choker traps .
I tried this a bit, but I don't think I had enough hair to really make a difference. The folks I've known that have suggested this say to go to a barber shop or beauty salon and get LOTS!
Snakes...is all I have to offer for the voles problem. I did use the voleX and see less activity but there are also more garter snakes, (are garter snakes eating the voles?). The chipmunks on the other hand are having a field day.
Absolutely! I try to encourage them as much as I can. I see a lot of garter snakes here (they sometimes will eat small rodents), and once in a while rat snakes (who definitely eat rodents)... but they don't seem to be keeping up with the vole population. 😣
There’s these “Goodnature” brand squirrel and chipmunk traps. I’ve been interested in those. There’s a CO2 cartridge which slams a steel rod into their heads when they search for the bait and kills them. They are worth a look. I have a problem with digging squirrels on my planters off my house decks. Been getting by with the pest away granular pellets for now. Maybe get a Blink remote camera for night time viewing of your traps and gardens. Just put a WIFI extender on the barn to reach the WIFI in the house. And I suggested barn cats before.
Oh interesting-- but they're not cheap are they?! I've been seriously considering the night camera too! Have you used the Blink one specifically? And the cats... oh how I wish we could keep a barn cat or two. We've had several feral cats that have tried to take up residence in our barn... and our dogs always chase them off.
@@GrowfullywithJenna -Trap: Yes, Pricey! Seemed very, very, interesting though. -Cats: Try getting some feral cats; save a life at the pound. Fix them; clip their ears so it shows they’ve been fixed. Feed and house it IN the fenced-in garden area. Put in a small cat door in the barn in the winter. Ask around. Farmers, and horse stables, who have grain feed usually have them and dogs. Or do a video short and ask for help. -Camera: I have a Blink. Others exist. I use a small 12V battery with a 5V convertor, which powers it ~8 weeks. I then replace it with a 2nd recharged battery. You could also have a solar recharger. IF you have AC power to the barn, you could do an Amcrest 4K camera and do 24/7 surveillance. You can mount that at the peak of the barn (above the ladder). Outside of power, both are wireless through WIFI. -And we discussed having multiple water faucets in the garden. Just a matter of getting 4x4 posts, mount a water faucet on it, run above ground water hoses it. Pretty it up later when you are happy with it.
Found a light switch in the barn by the door in another video. Looks like you have AC power. You're gold for WIFI cameras out there. Just put the extender on the barn, to reach the WIFI in the house. Looks like you record on your phone at 1080P, so you'll know what you'll be getting. You'll see all the little critters out there at night. The cameras have infrared. Add it to the TO-DO list, girl!
Moles love peanut butter. I bought a case of RAT traps and baited them with it. I was getting 4 or 5 moles a day. Controlled them pretty quick. I have a fence around my garden so my dogs wouldn’t get hurt. But it worked.
I have heavy clay soil and also tried the windmill but those suckers tunneled right next to it. I never saw a difference. Also I live in a windy area so it was spinning most days
Jenna, I told you how to get rid of moles. Chipmunks are super easy, tamper-proof bait stations with Final weather bloxs in the spring, Bell laboratories. Voles, are mostly below ground, however establishing tamper-proof bait stations around the garden really works. Another successful product from Bell laboratories is Talparid for moles. No affiliation to them whatsoever, but it works. I talk with 30 years of pest control experience. A tip for trapping moles. Walk the garden, poke holes in the tunnels, mark with a flag. Come back a day or two later and see what holes are covered, those are the most active runs, place your baits or traps in these burrows. Chipmunks are really stupid, nothing like an expanded trigger on a rat trap with some peanut butter and a couple sunflower seeds. You can even cover with a cardboard box with holes so you do not kill a chickadee. Personally, for moles I used the old victor mole traps, there are tricks to that also. In my career I saved a golf courses and countless homeowners from moles, I kinda know what I am talking about. One of the biggest draws to my booth at the county fair was my freeze dried moles along with my Plexiglas carpenter ant colony. Living with nature is not always kind, but necessary. love your videos! Lucky me, none here. Are dogs safe around the sissor trap ? Fox Terri would likely do the job but would dig and damage your beautiful garden Our fox Terri caught 28 his first season with chipmunks and several voles.14, his second season after that, chipmunks were not to be found
That's a great question. My dogs can't access the areas I have the traps set, so I never considered it. I'm afraid if a dog started digging around/under the trap, it could be dangerous. Terriers are definitely great dogs to have around when it comes to vermin!
Moles are a protected species in my country but sometimes I dream about squashing them too 😅😅 I use non-lethal repellents, and after a while, they usually move away if I’m consistent enough but patience is needed for this step…this year they’re especially annoying, they tunneled up into one of my raised bed too and messed up everything there…I like to remind myself that moles are useful animals and cute too to not blow up from anger when I discover another tunnel in my vegetable garden 🤣😅
I can understand that! And they are cute and can be useful! I've always wished I could wrangle all the moles into areas where I want to build new gardens and have them work the soil for season for me!

moles are a huge problem in my garden for the reasons that you mentioned. I don't mind them in my yard either. Thanks for these tips. I am going to put them into use. My dog is very good at catching moles, however, she is also problematic in my garden. LOL

I had that exact scissor trap and unfortunately never caught a single mole. I did unfortunately catch one of my fingers. It was very painful. No one was around to help and I couldn’t apply enough force to open the blades with one hand. I had to pull my pinky out of its grip, essentially skinning my finger in the process. 0/10 would not recommend getting your finger caught in a scissor trap. I know other people who had good results with that trap. Perhaps mine was faulty. It was difficult to trigger, which is how I ended up with my finger caught in it On my neighbor’s recommendation I purchased 2 Gopher Hawk traps and have since caught many moles with no further injuries to myself. But as with any trap, you must set them correctly. There are lots of videos on CZcams demonstrating how to do it
Hi I have rats that live under my deck, do you have any idea how to get rid of them, I have a Yorkie dog but it doesn't work, he can chase squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks, skunk and birds though
For voles, mice and monks I found that here in Stevens County, WA I was so fed up that I did my Cousin's cure from the farms by setting up the 5 gal bucket drowning pool to cruel perfection when set by main food sources Ie garbage area. Next day I removed it with 14 of all 3 kinds Deceased and didn't put it back. This is in a residential backed up by 14 wooded acres with owls, hawks and coyotes very present. 3 kinds bein rats, voles monks.
Chipmunks: fill 5 gal bucket with water 2/3 full. Put layer of black sunflowers on top of water (about 1/2 cup or so). Just need to cover surface of water. Then take a 2x4 board about 4 ft long and lean against bucket. Sprinkle few sunflowers on 2x4 ramp trailing toward top. They will see them in bucket and dive for them. Use a garden claw(long handle) to check for victims. Replace and clean water and seeds when starts to have odor. We do this when we start to see chipmunks and works well. Good-luck. We have scissor traps and windmills also. Don’t feel windmill works, but like the looks of them! Have had luck with scissor also. Tried numerous other things also. Don’t use poison either.
I herd a story where propane gas an oxygen was put in the tunnel an light it. Boom. Another way is sulfur smoke flair light it an use a blower to force the smoke in.
Great video! One thing to note, is that Ohio regulations on any kind of trapping not just recommend, but actually require, that you check the traps every 24 hours or less. It is actually punishable by law to wait more than 24 hours between checking traps, and you must also verify that if it is a lethal trap that it did, in fact, dispatch the critter. Otherwise, this is a great video! You really might want to let people know about the regulations though.
I’m 50 years old, terrified of insects, I mean HORRIFIED, so I am embarrassed to admit I stay indoors or out of wood where bugs may be! However, I decided I wanted to be “Farmer Emma Dee” this year so I planted two tomato plants in north Alabama. I only like tomatoes a little bit, but I saw these plants (Bigger Boy & Better Boy, 2 for $5) and for grins and giggles to my entire family, Emma is now a farmer!! So I dug holes with a shovel, planted them deep in ground and three weeks later, they’ve like tripled in size!! I went to Lowe’s and bought me some cages for about $8 each, did what this fine lady said bout pruning my vines off the ground, fingers crossed, I’m gonna grow a tomato or two!!! 😀😂😂
PS. I’ve already got a few of those yellow flowers on my plants. I come home every day, looking for tomatoes. I’ve never been so excited and determined not to kill a poor plant. I also found some fertilizer stuff out in my stepdads shop (smelled like fish shit, one had some numbers on it, salt, etc.). I mixed it all up in a water bucket, and poured it on!! So far so good!! Milky Spore is a bacterium that kills the beatle larva that moles eat. You put a teaspoon full, if memory serves, every square foot. The larva get infected, spread the bacterium throughout the yard as they die, leaving the bacterium wherever they die. The year I put this out, in order to better spread the bacteria, I put out pheromone attractors intended for traps, but I didn't use the traps. I wanted the beatles to bred and spread the spores, thus better creating a better inoculated yard. We used to see grubs every time we dug a hole. Now, there are none. We never had moles. This was an attempt to increase the odds that we wouldn't. Our neighbors have had them, but we don't.
Hi Jenna, I do have a mole problem in my veggie garden. I have created an oasis of beautiful soil and a generous earthworm population in an otherwise sand and gravel 2 acre backyard. So it is no surprise that moles have created a pathway right to my garden. They disrupt roots and more importantly create tunnels for voles to snack on my root crops. Tonight was a weird experience. It has been very dry and today we had about an inch of rain. I had put an Earthbox that I just emptied out in the garden to rinse out in rain. When I went to dump the water out darned if the resident mole was right there, on the surface under the box. Mole is gone but I'm wondering if that may be a way to trap? I know moles wander but really weird it found that dry place to shelter from the rain in a 40' X 40' garden....
too bad the windmill is not effective against voles, I'm still struggling with these little rascals. invested in a few GoppherHawk type traps for them, hopefully it will be worth it. They've been outsmarting the normal mouse traps I've been setting and either tunneling around them or just burying them in soil - uber frustrating.
i treat for grubs before there are a lot of low growing flowers are going. I treated years when i had my dog because the stuff i used was more broad spectrum. I stopped treating when he passed in 2020. by 2022 i had moles heavy and went with various treatments to repel or kill them. No real success. Went back to treating in the early spring and noticeable reduction in mole activity.
Moles seem to be the least of my worries here, voles on the other hand are absolute pests! Between those and the squirrels, I wonder if the real solution is just getting a cat? My main pests this year seem to be rabbits and deer, who somehow decided to snack on my raspberry canes as they leafed out.
It's the Wire Tek brand. I've not tried out the other similar scissors traps from other brands, so I can't speak to how well they work. But this was the one that was specifically recommended to me.
Fortunately no vole. What I thought were vole was actually rat, but the friendly stray cats took care of it. I basically have makeshift shelter in my property so the stray cats can come and rest occasionally. I have to deal with skunk digging my garden beds every single night. So far the best way is simply to make hoops with pvc pipes and cover the bed with netting. However due to the nature of certain tall vegetables you simply can't cover all the beds. Straws mulch do not help. If the entire surface of the soil is covered with plants they are less likely to dig. Also they are less likely to dig or not at all with containers that are placed higher like at least 2ft off the ground. If I had the money I would replace all my beds with those very tall steel raised beds, then I only have to deal with squirrels digging every day but maybe not skunk.
chipmunks. I have had great luck with the black plastic rat/mouse traps baited with peanut butter. they kinda look like those potato chip bag clamps and are about as big as a brick, maybe less.
Hi Jenna, hate to bother you, but I usually us straw to keep the weeds down, but here in Ohio, I end up growing lots of wheat grass because someones harvesting process is not very efficient. Anyway, what can I use in place of straw for my plants? I use a traditional "Garden Ways" style of gardening, not raised beds. Also, have you watch "Hollis and Nancy" on youtube, they are a retire couple in Florida, if not check them out, they are so cute.
I'm testing out solutions for voles now. Hoping to find some really efficient solutions and share. I don't have much trouble with squirrels here, so I've never really tried anything for them.
I'm familiar with Dokken's music- but had to look him up as I had no idea what Don Dokken looks like. The first image was a recent one... and I'll admit, I was a bit offended. But then I saw some pics of him was he was younger... and I definitely see the resemblance 😂
I feel slightly guilty about it but I've resorted to the poison worms. The first time I used the scissor trap I caught one but none since. I basically live in a forest edge and the moles zigzag from one woody area, through my yarden to another woody area on the other side.
Gophers are a real problem for. The only thing that done any real is to insecticide on all grassy areas which I don’t like to do. So wake every day to another mount on dirt.
find a younger child who has never seen a chipmunk. bring them out to your farm to "see all the chipmunks" poof, no chipmunks sincerely a city girl who saw her first chipmunk in a national park and was smitten... that chipmunk passed word out that i was a deranged stalker and they all vanished
Moles and voles are two very different creatures. Moles are GOOD for the garden by eating insects you don't want. Voles eat plants and you don't want them. Repel them with castor oil and hot pepper.
Lots of castor plants planted here every year... sadly, it doesn't seem to phase them (but I keep planting castor beans because I love the way they look!)
Get a 5 gallon bucket and fill it halfway with water. Sprinkle sunflower seeds into the water, so you just see the seeds. Lay a board leading up the bucket and sprinkle some seeds on the ramp. Works great for chipmunks. They fell in and can't get out. One night, I caught a whole family. Like 15 or so.
I have wind mill, have tried 3 types of kill traps, and even used moth balls Nothing works , so I have gave up and now only garden in 18gallon totes placed in chairs, at least I still have a garden but my yard is a disaster my lawn service can’t seem to even help regrow my grass, muddy hills cover my entire yard front and back. 🥴

And for voles, We have 2 stray cats that a neighbor had trap, neuter and release. They are excellent control of voles. They catch the darn things and come and show them to me.
How I wish I could have some cats here... my dogs refuse to get along with them 😣
I've always had good luck with the spiked trap, but it was a little different design than the one you showed, but hey, whatever works! It takes daily diligence to check/reset it, but it was effective. I kinda like the scissor trap and seems MUCH safer to set. The advice I got from an older gentleman near me was to go after their food source and told me that moles largely go after grubs. I obviously didn't want any pesticide in my garden, but I do apply a product annually now to the rest of my lawn around the garden and have only seen occasional moles since over the last 20+ years (maybe one every few years). Seeing a mole tunnel in the yard when I mow acts as an early warning, and I get the trap out before the tunnel gets extensive. They always come into the yard from an adjacent wooded area next to my property. I still see a few grubs in my garden when tilling or planting, but it's like the moles haven't been 'led there' by the food source. You are definitely on the right track with killing them though... Have your kids push down any existing hill runs thru the yard, then watch which hills are active to know where to place the traps. Good Luck!!! Groundhogs are good at that!! We have one (or two) at my parent's who will take 1 bite out of almost ripe tomatoes and just move on down the line... SO aggravating 😡

I've caught voles in early spring with just a standard mouse trap baited with peanut butter and bird seed. Might be harder in late spring summer when they have more food available.
I've started doing this too... I think I need more mousetraps though!
I've had some success with this method too - at least more than anything else I've tried. I used standard wooden mouse traps baited with peanut butter and/or bird seed. I moved primarily to bird seed because the peanut butter can attract ants which seems to keep the voles away from the trap. Black sunflower seems to work particularly well because you can wedge it into the gap on the "bait bar" found on most traps, making it harder for them to steal. ID the tunnels, dig out an area to place the trap in the tunnel and cross your fingers. Be sure to leave enough space for the bar to clear any surrounding soil or you'll get a lot of misses. Also, I would generally place something like a plant pot over the hole to block out light which might alert the buggers - not sure if this helps or not. And yeah, be prepared to set quite a few.
I saw a video by NHHosta, to use caster oil. After 3 applications of caster oil, the mole family invading my property moved on. I will continue to use the oil in any problem area created by tunneling invaders. Thank you for the videos you create.😊
If you plant castor plants they’ll repel them too and save you money on oil. Just save seeds for next year.

I tried every castor oil product I could get a hold of and grow lots of castor beans every year...sadly did not work for me.
@@robingalloway3541 you can get bottle castor oil in big box store. I dump that and squeeze of dish soap into my 2 gallon water can. I make circle of it around my garden area after i do spring garden prep.
The scissor traps, is the best, but I find out when you got one dead mole in your trap,you have to clean your traps with soap or lysol, because the mole seem to be able to smell ,and they will go around ,I caught this spring 5 moles. With this trap, it works,

I watched both of your videos on moles. We have the same problem, they are everywhere. Like you I don't care that they have tunnels all over my yard but my gardens, really... they can do so much damage. I hate killing animals and too its my last resort. When they continue to tunnel under my whole row of cucumbers and push all my mature plants right out of the ground and instead of tunneling around my tomatoes they seem to tunnel right to them. We too have literally tried everything, I started with the sonic sound wave stakes and they did nothing. After trying every trap out there the best one we found too was the scissor trap. Last year after I thought I maybe had 2 or 3 moles in my garden I found I had more like 12. We have a pool in the backyard and the pump and filter are rather close to the garden, I will say that when the pump was running mole traffic was down. So vibration helped, it didnt work alone but helped.
If you ever get good info on getting rid of squirrels or chipmunks please make a video. I can't seem to keep them out of my strawberries. They not only ate every ripe berry they ate every white one too. All that work for nothing it makes you want to cry.

For Moles, Gophers and Voles, I recommend using traps from Trapline Products. When I bought this property in western WA I had a very serious mole issue with my backyard looking like some weird alien landscape dotted with many mole hills. The Trapline mole trap is the only solution that works consistently. Unlike those above ground traps, Trapline traps are inserted into the tunnels which means that eve if the tunnel is very deep, they will still work. They are also relatively cheap individually so you can buy a few dozens and basically turn your yard into a mole trapping minefield. Doing this makes the math work in your favor, with the entire yard now turned into a minefield of traps, any moles navigating the area will have to be lucky every single time it uses a tunnel while you only have to lucky once for the mole to hit the trap.
If you do use this trap, leave the traps in the tunnels even after the initial mole has been eliminated (you'll know when no more new mole hills appear). Moles are territorial so once the original mole has died, a new one might investigate and move into this new territory and there's a good chance it'll hit one of your traps too. I sometimes leave dozens of these traps in my yard for the whole spring and end up with 3 or more moles skeletons when I finally dig them up.

Milky Spore-gets rid of grubs and no more moles. We’ve had spike traps and scissors traps and they work, but why not just get rid of what they are after-grubs.
I’ve used juicy fruit gum and it appeared to work because the next day it was laying up out of the tunnel. We had a drought year then also and not sure if that had any correlation.
I mentioned before we use rat traps for gophers and voles. Bait for gophers was celery leaf and voles peanut butter. We use an open cage over peanut butter to keep birds, ect away. We never ever had a vole until last winter when I seen the tunnels on top of soil under snow. They ate spring bulbs-all of the blue star flower type. They are all gone
As with any pesky varmints, get rid of the food source and the varmint will move on. I use GrubX pellets in a grass seed distributor once every 5 years and voles, chipmunks and moles haven't come back. I use all through my yard and around the outside of my garden, never inside. Chipmunks are omnivores so they like grubs too!
I've tried the grub products (and do they may have slightly helped), but the problem is there are still plenty of earthworms for them to nosh on... and I definitely don't want to get rid of those! I've been told that earthworms are a mole's favorite food! Though I'm tempted to double down on the grub products given your results with the voles & chipmunks- thanks!
@@GrowfullywithJenna like I said, the critters we had were so destructive! I only use the grub x around the perimeter of the garden because I really focus on growing things organically. If you keep the rodents down you'll have less snakes too because that takes care of THEIR food supply. Good luck my dear!

I used solar vibrate things I stuck in the ground 2 years ago. It got completely rid of the moles. I have no more problems with them. Now I have problems with squirrels and rabbits. I was mowing the grass this morning and scared a way 5 baby bunny's. Hopefully, they go next door.
I guess one good thing about having rocky soil is, I don't have a problem with moles.

Hi Jenna. Voles tend to run along set pathways in our garden, so my husband cut 15 inch lengths of 4” diameter pvc pipe and then split those in half length-wise to create little tunnels. He then places 2 mouse traps on the ground end-to-end with the baited ends facing away from each other and places a tunnel over top of them. When the voles run their path in either direction, they run into the tunnel and right to the bait. We’ve been using this method for years and it works great. Moles don’t like our shale soil so thankfully we don’t have them. Chipmunks are infrequent but we use a have-a-heart trap for them and then relocate to woods a few miles away.

These are placed above ground? That confuses me when voles, to my knowledge, stay underground. How do you keep you pets away?
@@frankt7521 Yes, they are placed above ground. Voles run above ground as well as burrow underground to feed on roots, etc. The voles run above ground along the outside edges of our wooden raised beds and compost bin and then have entry holes into the beds. We don’t have dogs, so can’t comment on that although we do have raccoons, skunks and neighbors’ cats visit the yard and they’ve never bothered them. You could try placing arched stakes down over each end of the pipe?

Have you tried blood meal? It is a mole deterrent. You could either add it at the drip line of each plant And water it in or or work it into the first 2 to 3 inches of your soil before you plant your starts. There is organic blood Meal available in 25 pound bags on Amaazon to cover larger areas of your garden. and it has a 2 to 3 months release time, so you don't have to work it in every few weeks.
In my country it is recommended to plant springstar, Kaiser's crown or caper spurge around where they dug up, because the smell of their roots disgust them. I don't know how different american moles are but if someone feels like experimenting, you can give it a try 😂😂😂

Have an attachment that fits on the exhaust of a tractor or other vehicle. You attach a garden hose to it and stick the other end of thee hose in the varmint hole as far as you can. Put dirt over the area where the hose goes in the ground, sealing off the hole. Running the vehicle for 1/2 hour or so, as done a good job ending the problem.
That is one method I've not tested. Lots of folks on my old video said that this worked for them. I'm not sure I want to run a bunch of exhaust into my garden, but may be worth trying for folks who want to get rid of them in their lawn.
I use Pinwheels but now that I see your windmill I'll have to make one of those.

Thank you! We only get them in the lawn currently, but we’re always expanding our garden, and not all planting spaces are raised beds (with a hardware cloth base, of course!). I’ve been wanting to find some sort of “spinner” for the garden but they all seem to be trash…this windmill will be the perfect dual purpose gadget. And thanks also for the info on the trap. We’ve had negative results with several, so now I know where to turn if we need them.
Looking forward to info on chipmunks…they run amok in our garden. My husband resorts to lethal methods that involve a bucket and sunflower seeds 😬 I stopped feeding the birds in hopes of reducing populations but I don’t think it’s done much.

I had a chow/shepard mix dog she took care of my moles. She would sniff them out and dig them up. And roll on them. But moles love grubs. Get rid of grubs, moles leave.
There is a certain cut height for grass that deters grubs, so therefore keeps the armadillo, voles and such away from the lawn. Dogs are great molers/ volers. Of course both these options are not suited for gardens.😂

Snakes...is all I have to offer for the voles problem. I did use the voleX and see less activity but there are also more garter snakes, (are garter snakes eating the voles?). The chipmunks on the other hand are having a field day.
Absolutely! I try to encourage them as much as I can. I see a lot of garter snakes here (they sometimes will eat small rodents), and once in a while rat snakes (who definitely eat rodents)... but they don't seem to be keeping up with the vole population. 😣

There’s these “Goodnature” brand squirrel and chipmunk traps. I’ve been interested in those. There’s a CO2 cartridge which slams a steel rod into their heads when they search for the bait and kills them. They are worth a look.
I have a problem with digging squirrels on my planters off my house decks. Been getting by with the pest away granular pellets for now.
Maybe get a Blink remote camera for night time viewing of your traps and gardens. Just put a WIFI extender on the barn to reach the WIFI in the house.
And I suggested barn cats before.

-Cats: Try getting some feral cats; save a life at the pound. Fix them; clip their ears so it shows they’ve been fixed. Feed and house it IN the fenced-in garden area. Put in a small cat door in the barn in the winter. Ask around. Farmers, and horse stables, who have grain feed usually have them and dogs. Or do a video short and ask for help.
-Camera: I have a Blink. Others exist. I use a small 12V battery with a 5V convertor, which powers it ~8 weeks. I then replace it with a 2nd recharged battery. You could also have a solar recharger. IF you have AC power to the barn, you could do an Amcrest 4K camera and do 24/7 surveillance. You can mount that at the peak of the barn (above the ladder). Outside of power, both are wireless through WIFI.
-And we discussed having multiple water faucets in the garden. Just a matter of getting 4x4 posts, mount a water faucet on it, run above ground water hoses it. Pretty it up later when you are happy with it.
Found a light switch in the barn by the door in another video. Looks like you have AC power. You're gold for WIFI cameras out there. Just put the extender on the barn, to reach the WIFI in the house. Looks like you record on your phone at 1080P, so you'll know what you'll be getting. You'll see all the little critters out there at night. The cameras have infrared.

Moles love peanut butter. I bought a case of RAT traps and baited them with it. I was getting 4 or 5 moles a day. Controlled them pretty quick. I have a fence around my garden so my dogs wouldn’t get hurt. But it worked.

Jenna, I told you how to get rid of moles. Chipmunks are super easy, tamper-proof bait stations with Final weather bloxs in the spring, Bell laboratories. Voles, are mostly below ground, however establishing tamper-proof bait stations around the garden really works.
Another successful product from Bell laboratories is Talparid for moles. No affiliation to them whatsoever, but it works.
I talk with 30 years of pest control experience.
A tip for trapping moles. Walk the garden, poke holes in the tunnels, mark with a flag. Come back a day or two later and see what holes are covered, those are the most active runs, place your baits or traps in these burrows.
Chipmunks are really stupid, nothing like an expanded trigger on a rat trap with some peanut butter and a couple sunflower seeds. You can even cover with a cardboard box with holes so you do not kill a chickadee.
Personally, for moles I used the old victor mole traps, there are tricks to that also.
In my career I saved a golf courses and countless homeowners from moles, I kinda know what I am talking about.
One of the biggest draws to my booth at the county fair was my freeze dried moles along with my Plexiglas carpenter ant colony.
Living with nature is not always kind, but necessary.

That's a great question. My dogs can't access the areas I have the traps set, so I never considered it. I'm afraid if a dog started digging around/under the trap, it could be dangerous. Terriers are definitely great dogs to have around when it comes to vermin!
Moles are a protected species in my country but sometimes I dream about squashing them too 😅😅 I use non-lethal repellents, and after a while, they usually move away if I’m consistent enough but patience is needed for this step…this year they’re especially annoying, they tunneled up into one of my raised bed too and messed up everything there…I like to remind myself that moles are useful animals and cute too to not blow up from anger when I discover another tunnel in my vegetable garden 🤣😅

I had that exact scissor trap and unfortunately never caught a single mole. I did unfortunately catch one of my fingers. It was very painful. No one was around to help and I couldn’t apply enough force to open the blades with one hand. I had to pull my pinky out of its grip, essentially skinning my finger in the process. 0/10 would not recommend getting your finger caught in a scissor trap. I know other people who had good results with that trap. Perhaps mine was faulty. It was difficult to trigger, which is how I ended up with my finger caught in it
On my neighbor’s recommendation I purchased 2 Gopher Hawk traps and have since caught many moles with no further injuries to myself. But as with any trap, you must set them correctly. There are lots of videos on CZcams demonstrating how to do it

For voles, mice and monks I found that here in Stevens County, WA I was so fed up that I did my Cousin's cure from the farms by setting up the 5 gal bucket drowning pool to cruel perfection when set by main food sources Ie garbage area. Next day I removed it with 14 of all 3 kinds Deceased and didn't put it back. This is in a residential backed up by 14 wooded acres with owls, hawks and coyotes very present. 3 kinds bein rats, voles monks.
I have used the bucket method effectively too. I used sunflower seeds to lure them in. It was most effective with chipmunks.
Chipmunks: fill 5 gal bucket with water 2/3 full. Put layer of black sunflowers on top of water (about 1/2 cup or so). Just need to cover surface of water. Then take a 2x4 board about 4 ft long and lean against bucket. Sprinkle few sunflowers on 2x4 ramp trailing toward top. They will see them in bucket and dive for them. Use a garden claw(long handle) to check for victims. Replace and clean water and seeds when starts to have odor. We do this when we start to see chipmunks and works well. Good-luck. We have scissor traps and windmills also. Don’t feel windmill works, but like the looks of them! Have had luck with scissor also. Tried numerous other things also. Don’t use poison either.

Another way is sulfur smoke flair light it an use a blower to force the smoke in.
Great video! One thing to note, is that Ohio regulations on any kind of trapping not just recommend, but actually require, that you check the traps every 24 hours or less. It is actually punishable by law to wait more than 24 hours between checking traps, and you must also verify that if it is a lethal trap that it did, in fact, dispatch the critter. Otherwise, this is a great video! You really might want to let people know about the regulations though.

I’m 50 years old, terrified of insects, I mean HORRIFIED, so I am embarrassed to admit I stay indoors or out of wood where bugs may be! However, I decided I wanted to be “Farmer Emma Dee” this year so I planted two tomato plants in north Alabama. I only like tomatoes a little bit, but I saw these plants (Bigger Boy & Better Boy, 2 for $5) and for grins and giggles to my entire family, Emma is now a farmer!! So I dug holes with a shovel, planted them deep in ground and three weeks later, they’ve like tripled in size!! I went to Lowe’s and bought me some cages for about $8 each, did what this fine lady said bout pruning my vines off the ground, fingers crossed, I’m gonna grow a tomato or two!!! 😀😂😂
PS. I’ve already got a few of those yellow flowers on my plants. I come home every day, looking for tomatoes. I’ve never been so excited and determined not to kill a poor plant. I also found some fertilizer stuff out in my stepdads shop (smelled like fish shit, one had some numbers on it, salt, etc.). I mixed it all up in a water bucket, and poured it on!! So far so good!! Milky Spore is a bacterium that kills the beatle larva that moles eat. You put a teaspoon full, if memory serves, every square foot. The larva get infected, spread the bacterium throughout the yard as they die, leaving the bacterium wherever they die. The year I put this out, in order to better spread the bacteria, I put out pheromone attractors intended for traps, but I didn't use the traps. I wanted the beatles to bred and spread the spores, thus better creating a better inoculated yard. We used to see grubs every time we dug a hole. Now, there are none. We never had moles. This was an attempt to increase the odds that we wouldn't. Our neighbors have had them, but we don't.

Hi Jenna, I do have a mole problem in my veggie garden. I have created an oasis of beautiful soil and a generous earthworm population in an otherwise sand and gravel 2 acre backyard. So it is no surprise that moles have created a pathway right to my garden. They disrupt roots and more importantly create tunnels for voles to snack on my root crops.
Tonight was a weird experience. It has been very dry and today we had about an inch of rain. I had put an Earthbox that I just emptied out in the garden to rinse out in rain. When I went to dump the water out darned if the resident mole was right there, on the surface under the box. Mole is gone but I'm wondering if that may be a way to trap? I know moles wander but really weird it found that dry place to shelter from the rain in a 40' X 40' garden....

too bad the windmill is not effective against voles, I'm still struggling with these little rascals. invested in a few GoppherHawk type traps for them, hopefully it will be worth it. They've been outsmarting the normal mouse traps I've been setting and either tunneling around them or just burying them in soil - uber frustrating.
I wish so much that it did! Voles are so frustrating!

i treat for grubs before there are a lot of low growing flowers are going. I treated years when i had my dog because the stuff i used was more broad spectrum. I stopped treating when he passed in 2020. by 2022 i had moles heavy and went with various treatments to repel or kill them. No real success. Went back to treating in the early spring and noticeable reduction in mole activity.
Moles seem to be the least of my worries here, voles on the other hand are absolute pests! Between those and the squirrels, I wonder if the real solution is just getting a cat? My main pests this year seem to be rabbits and deer, who somehow decided to snack on my raspberry canes as they leafed out.

It's the Wire Tek brand. I've not tried out the other similar scissors traps from other brands, so I can't speak to how well they work. But this was the one that was specifically recommended to me.

Fortunately no vole. What I thought were vole was actually rat, but the friendly stray cats took care of it. I basically have makeshift shelter in my property so the stray cats can come and rest occasionally.
I have to deal with skunk digging my garden beds every single night. So far the best way is simply to make hoops with pvc pipes and cover the bed with netting. However due to the nature of certain tall vegetables you simply can't cover all the beds. Straws mulch do not help. If the entire surface of the soil is covered with plants they are less likely to dig. Also they are less likely to dig or not at all with containers that are placed higher like at least 2ft off the ground. If I had the money I would replace all my beds with those very tall steel raised beds, then I only have to deal with squirrels digging every day but maybe not skunk.
chipmunks. I have had great luck with the black plastic rat/mouse traps baited with peanut butter. they kinda look like those potato chip bag clamps and are about as big as a brick, maybe less.
Why not use Milky Spores? Works great. Get rid of the grubs and they move on.
Hi Jenna, hate to bother you, but I usually us straw to keep the weeds down, but here in Ohio, I end up growing lots of wheat grass because someones harvesting process is not very efficient.
Anyway, what can I use in place of straw for my plants? I use a traditional "Garden Ways" style of gardening, not raised beds. Also, have you watch "Hollis and Nancy" on youtube, they are a retire couple in Florida, if not check them out, they are so cute.
Grass clippings, leaf mulch and 2nd or 3rd cutting alfalfa hay are my favorites.
How about groundhogs? Any suggestions?

I'm testing out solutions for voles now. Hoping to find some really efficient solutions and share. I don't have much trouble with squirrels here, so I've never really tried anything for them.
@@GrowfullywithJenna You are lucky! Squirrels will dig in every raised bed the day I plant seeds it seedlings, so my rows always end up all wonky

I'm familiar with Dokken's music- but had to look him up as I had no idea what Don Dokken looks like. The first image was a recent one... and I'll admit, I was a bit offended. But then I saw some pics of him was he was younger... and I definitely see the resemblance 😂
I feel slightly guilty about it but I've resorted to the poison worms. The first time I used the scissor trap I caught one but none since. I basically live in a forest edge and the moles zigzag from one woody area, through my yarden to another woody area on the other side.
Blood meal is your friend when it comes to rodents .
How? As bait 4 a trap or just added to soil?
@@lyndelgado6138 sprinkle it around your garden and it deters rodents. It is high in nitrogen so pay attention to which plants you utilize it on.

Gophers are a real problem for. The only thing that done any real is to insecticide on all grassy areas which I don’t like to do. So wake every day to another mount on dirt.

Moles and voles are two very different creatures. Moles are GOOD for the garden by eating insects you don't want. Voles eat plants and you don't want them. Repel them with castor oil and hot pepper.
Plant castor plants in your garden. They hate the roots.
Lots of castor plants planted here every year... sadly, it doesn't seem to phase them (but I keep planting castor beans because I love the way they look!)
Get a 5 gallon bucket and fill it halfway with water. Sprinkle sunflower seeds into the water, so you just see the seeds. Lay a board leading up the bucket and sprinkle some seeds on the ramp. Works great for chipmunks. They fell in and can't get out. One night, I caught a whole family. Like 15 or so.
I was testing this out earlier this year-- caught just a few chipmunks but a LOT of mice!

Moles are Insectivores and if you have them in your yard they are Beneficial and eat grubs and soil-dwelling insects.

I have wind mill, have tried 3 types of kill traps, and even used moth balls Nothing works , so I have gave up and now only garden in 18gallon totes placed in chairs, at least I still have a garden but my yard is a disaster my lawn service can’t seem to even help regrow my grass, muddy hills cover my entire yard front and back. 🥴
