    I always interpreted teresa not jumping to safety right before she dies as her accepting a "deserved death". Like she was so ashamed of all she's done to them and thought that she didn't deserve it. However if that was the director's intention she could have just shook her head and it would be crystal clear to who's watching that she believed she should die after all she's done.

      They totally implied it. I preferred this choice over shooting herself 'cause it's subtle. Also she was never desperate, she hasn't always been totally guilty about her choices, so with this scene you can feel the last-minute hesitation

      Theresa and WCKD were essentially one and the same. Theresa realised there was no future for her in a post-WCKD world. So, she chose to die with WCKD as it were.

    I think one of the best things about this series is that it doesn't create the usual clear distinction between good and evil. The moral struggles are real and hit close to reality.
    Some backstory: Newt is so worried about saving Minho and doesn't even give importance to his infection, because Minho (before Thomas arrived) saved his life in the Glade by preventing Newt himself, who was having a dark time, from jumping off the wall of the maze one night, thus from committing suicide.

    • @user-bl5yi4uw6j
      @user-bl5yi4uw6j Před 3 měsíci

      Newt and Thomas are essentially the same person. The difference being one is immune, the other not. So, they behave similarly.

    Dylan O'Brien (Thomas) suffered horrific injuries days into filming as they shot the opening scenes, including TBI. Thankfully he pulled through after a long recovery period, mental and physical

  • @propriov
    @propriov Před 7 měsíci +35

    1:06:00 I don't think Newt's death scene, with all the back-and-forth, was necessarily meant to lead to the dramatic effect. It was more suspense like "he's going crazy but not completely, there's still a part of him somewhere, and therefore still a chance to save him if the serum arrives in time"

    • @user-bl5yi4uw6j
      @user-bl5yi4uw6j Před 3 měsíci +1

      A very poignant moment in the film and tragic ironic. That scene emphasizes the great love that Newt and Thomas had for each other. No way could Thomas kill Newt even if Thomas' life depended on it. We know Thomas always acts selflessly and to save others, but this would be especially true when it involves Newt. Thomas would defend his life as best he could but would draw the line at actually killing Newt. In other words, it was inevitable Newt would kill Thomas. What remained of Newt realised this and to save Thomas' life he killed himself instead. At that last terrible moment, there is no doubt Newt could have pointed the knife towards Thomas instead of himself. While suicide is typically a selfish act, Newt acted completely unselfishly in this instance, and the Bible says "greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."
      In the film's final scene, as Thomas contemplates the ship and returning to the Flare-stricken world, who do you think he's thinking about? Theresa or Newt? You might say he's thinking of them both. But my money is that he's remembering Newt.

    When the car flips in the tunnel that wasn’t supposed to happen in the script it really did just accidentally flip while filming the scene and they decided to use it in the movie. Pretty cool.
    Also, the actor who played Thomas did his own stunts for the movie and I guess he actually got pretty messed up injured while filming, he had facial fractures and brain damage and they had to delay filming while he had surgery and recovery time.

    47:25 Antibodies against the virus are strengthened when the brain struggles in harsh and stressful situations and Thomas has been through a lot since he worked for WCKD - more than the others with all the choices he made, plus seeing Chuck dying for saving his life (in the book WCKD controlled Chuck's action and did it on purpose) - that's why they didn't notice anything special about him before!
    (Also, if you think about it, the "Scorch trials" of the 2nd movie were themselves a test without necessarily wanting to be one)

      When Thomas arrived at Jansen's facility, he was not the cure. They took his blood, so they would have known if he was. It is interesting, though, that he's the only one we saw them do that to. Again, are they thinking Thomas is especially special? Anyway, as you say, because of what happened to Thomas after escaping Jansen's his brain chemisty (engrams) was altered and he became the cure by the time he arrived at the Right Arm encampment. It's also worth noting, that different people react differently to stress, so you can't assume that everyone's brain chemistry would be altered the same way even if subjected to the same stimuli. We are all unique.

    Teresa’s death makes a lot more sense in the books, if I’m remembering correctly she actually sacrifices herself for Thomas, and gets crushed in the process. So it’s not just like oh… she could’ve saved herself?? It actually meant something because she knew he was the cure and knew he had to live over her☺️ (also pls correct me/add onto this if I’m wrong or missing context at all!)

    Here endeth the third lesson of this amazing heroic trilogy. Although these films were adapted from a YA series of books, they are adult films, not YA, which probably explains the reaction of some viewers of that ilk. There is no female protagonist with associated love triangle etc. However, there is a love story, albeit one that's subtly understated. The films do homage to the books, but the universe of the films is not the same as the books. Thomas is very different in the films. You could describe the film trilogy as about selflessness and about a band of brothers, who follow the principle of "No man left behind." You could also say it's about life's stages with the first film being about childhood, the second about adolescence, and the third about adulthood. This only touches the surface, of course.
    The films are deeply rooted in myth. The most obvious aspect being the ancient Greek myth of "Theseus and the Minotaur." Thomas is, naturally, both the hero Theseus and Daedalus, whereas Newt is Ariadne, and therein lies the trilogy's love story.
    Heroic stories often follow the same basic pattern. In his book "The Hero with a Thousand Faces," Joseph Campbell, distilled the world's myths into a common structure which he called the monomyth or hero's journey. It's very concisely summarized as follows: A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man. That's the "Maze Runner" film trilogy in a nutshell.
    What's the "boon" in the trilogy? Obviously, it's Thomas himself or, more specifically, his blood. He can potentially save mankind. By the end of the third film, Thomas has come to accept this as his destiny which he will meet even if it means his death. Tragic heroes almost always die, and Thomas is a tragic hero. This is without doubt what the epilogue of the final film means. Thomas is going back to the Krank-world, and he is going to offer himself up as a cure even if it means his life is forfeit. Unlike the books, Thomas is not going to remain in the Safe Haven with Brenda to live happily ever after. Even though WCKD's HQ was destroyed along with the city, there were more than one WCKD lab and installation referenced in the films. Ask yourself, where was WCKD evacuating to in the third film?
    The fact that the trilogy doesn't end with a conventional happy-ending like boy-gets-girl or vice-versa, if that's your preference, also sets it apart. Another reason these are adult films. Nevertheless, many people do crave happy-endings. Instead, the film ends on a hopeful note. Thomas is going back. He's not going to stay in the Safe Haven, which, if you think about it, is really a new Glade. He's going to venture out into the maze again, the krank-filled-world. He's going to try to save, in this case, not just Alby and Minho, but the world. It's an open question whether he'll succeed. We hope so, but we don't know. This time the maze might defeat him. The end of the trilogy brings us full-circle, and we're back at the beginning.
    Thomas and Theresa are basically mirror images of one another. They're both betrayers, and they both want a cure, but they're complete opposites otherwise. The key difference being Thomas is selfless, whereas Theresa is self-centered. Theresa often refers to her own personal history to explain her actions. Thomas never does. To be fair, Thomas can't because his personal history has been erased, but, even so, we can see his altruism is innate. Personal history would have no bearing on his actions. These attributes primarily motivate their respective actions.
    Hopefully, everyone realizes there's no way Thomas could ever kill Newt, even Flare Newt. The same is true for Newt, but not Flare-Newt, of course. In that gut-wrenching struggle, Thomas would defend himself, but always stop short of killing Newt. Inevitably, Flare-Newt would kill Thomas. To save Thomas, Newt kills himself, instead, and as the Bible says: "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." Whereas Thomas and Theresa were "oppositum ego," Thomas and Newt were "idem ego."
    What effect did Newt's death have on Thomas? It's profound. Thomas is palpably different afterwards. He presents a diminished lifeforce and sadness. Not only did Newt die, but Thomas did, too. He will never again be the same person. Newt's death marks a turning point. From that time forward, Thomas will focus on being "the cure." He's not staying in the Safe Haven, he's leaving to save mankind. Thomas is determined to complete WCKD's mission, and we have yet another instance of immense tragic irony when Thomas, for a second time, offers himself to Ava Paige in lieu of the immunes. This time she accepts, and mankind might have been saved then and there, but Jansen, out of pure selfishness, kills her, and destroys the opportunity. The interplay between selflessness and selfishness is another aspect of the trilogy.
    "Does the end justify the means" represents WCKD's agenda and is the central theme of the "Maze Runner" trilogy. It's a principle often associated with totalitarianism, and the phrase has its origin with Machiavelli, although the idea is much older. The principle is part and parcel of consequentialism, a teleological theory that says whether an action is morally good or bad depends on its outcomes. The more good outcomes outnumber the bad, the better/more moral the action. Under this rubric if WCKD finds a cure, then WCKD is very good, indeed.
    Therea/WCKD adhere to this end-means principle rigidly. This principle is, unfortunately, a too common belief today. It allows people to believe their actions are justified regardless of how they go about achieving their desired end result. It potentially allows for all sorts of aberrant behaviors. A rather trivial example of this is the following scenario: My end is to get a certain work promotion. To get it, I work to sabotage all the other candidates. Hopefully, we agree that's not a nice way to behave. This is essentially the viewpoint of WCKD and Theresa, although they are dealing with an end of much greater significance. WCKD and Theresa are totally ruthless in their pursuit of a cure.
    Thomas, on the other hand, believes that the means are just as important, or, maybe, even more important, than the end. His viewpoint is if the means are morally objectionable in themselves, then this outweighs any potential benefit from the end. In other words, the "how" is just as important as the "why." Thomas, just like WCKD, wants to find a cure to the Flare, he's only opposed to how WCKD tries to do it. Thomas is willing to sacrifice himself to obtain a cure and save humanity. He's not willing, however, to sacrifice the unwilling.
    Theresa's/WCKD's morality is relativistic and man-centric, whereas Thomas' morality is based on absolute principles and God-centric. Even so, the trilogy challenges both WCKD's and Thomas' perspective, and makes us wonder which one is "right." I'm reminded of Pilate when he said: "What is truth?" We have man's truth, and we have God's Truth.
    Some miscellaneous observations:
    Cranks/Kranks. Krank is German for sick, diseased, unwell etc. The English word also has that connotation if you think about it.
    The purpose of the VR torture/stress isn't to increase heartrate but to alter brain engrams/chemistry. The increased heartrate is only a side-effect.
    Newt was probably injected with Flare at Jansen's facility. Recall the giant hypo? He was injected in that arm. The mystery is why it took so long to manifest itself. Different people may react differently.
    Thomas was shot in what looks to be the exact same spot as Ben was stung. By the way, under the circumstances, Thomas would have died from that gunshot wound. The only gripe I have about the films, and it's not really that big a gripe, is that Thomas should have died at the end of the third film. Tragic heroes almost always die, and since there weren't any more films, his arc was incomplete or left to the imagination.
    Why was Theresa put into the maze? She was always meant to coax Thomas back to WCKD, should he survive, as befits her role as "temptress."
    Why was Thomas put into the maze? Well, for betraying WCKD, but also to serve as an experimental catalyst to complete the Trial. He was the best and brightest of the immunes. A real genius, actually. His selflessness makes him act impulsively, and he can seem foolhardy as a result. He was Daedalus, the maze-maker etc., after all.
    Why do Thomas and, apparently, Theresa remember bits of their past, whereas the others don't? That must be by WCKD's design. Perhaps it's part of the coaxing back plan? WCKD always seems to want Thomas back after he escapes the maze.
    Why does Ben not seem to remember being stung or, presumably, the Griever? We know WCKD can wipe memories. Perhaps WCKD wanted stung boys to return to the Glade sometimes to create the situation he did. So, they'd wipe the memory of the sting/Griever. The Ben episode certainly created a lot of stress/terror for the Gladers, which was part of what the experiment was about.
    Why does the mob destroy the city? It's part and parcel of the madness of mobs!!
    Finally, what a fantastic trilogy "Maze Runner" is, especially when you consider all three films only cost $157 million. The average cost for a major Hollywood movie is $100 million. You'd never know it watching these three movies that they were done on the cheap. They come across as much more expensive productions. Hats off to the actors for their incredible performances and the director, crew and SFX folks, too. Job very well done.

      Yes, Thomas would minimally have the same knowledge and skills as Theresa - if his memory were restored. Actually, I think he was probably even more talented and capable than Theresa. Even WCKD seemed to want him back in spite of his betrayal.
      If they ever made a follow-up movie (unfortunately, unlikely), Thomas would have to somehow regain his memory. While necessary, it would probably be very painful for him. Also, because he is a tragic hero, he'd have to die at some point. So, a follow-up movie would be bittersweet, I think.

    Thomas was NOT always the cure. At Jansen's facility they did take Thomas' blood and presumably tested it. And we can reasonably assume Thomas' blood was tested while he was still part of WCKD. We don't know exactly when Thomas became "the cure," but obviously it was sometime after he escaped from Jansen's facility in "The Scorch Trials" and before he arrived at the Right Arm camp.
    Because Theresa was so wedded to WCKD, she was unwilling/unable to live in a post-WCKD world. She chose to die, as it were, with WCKD. WCKD was her raison d'etre.
    Some people theorize Newt was injected with the Flare virus at Jansen's facility when he got the "vitamins." Interestingly, the arm that manifested the Flare was the same arm he was jabbed. If so, it seems to have taken some months to manifest itself, but we don't really know how long the Flare takes to develop to full involvement. It also might be dependent on the person.
    One thing you did get correct was that Thomas was going to go back to the land of the Flare in an attempt to save humanity and probably die in the process. He is, after all, a tragic hero like Maximus in "The Gladiator." We see such tragic elements in Thomas as hamartia, hubris, nemesis, peripeteia, anagnorsis ....

    So between Teresa, Newt, and Brenda which Thomas love interest is the majority favorite?

    • @propriov
      @propriov Před 7 měsíci +1

      #TeamBrenda definitely, movie Brenda deserved more recognition. I can also understand Teresa's point of view, I don't completely despise her, but I'm still mad about the choice to let Thomas write her name on the rock at the end 😂 (and not Newt or Chuck's one) after the people who were tortured or even died because of her

    • @user-bl5yi4uw6j
      @user-bl5yi4uw6j Před 3 měsíci

      Thomas has only one love. It's impossible to know whom the majority would favour, but if you go by comments on CZcams, which is hardly scientific, I'd say it's Newt. Brenda may love Thomas, but he seems to regard her as friend only. There is an emotional bond between Thomas and Theresa because of their shared history, and it is significant, but if you view the totality of there interactions, it's apparent Theresa doesn't love Thomas in the sense you mean and vice-versa. Newt's letter to Thomas underscores where Thomas' love interest is.

    His blood isn't the cure! His blood is an INGREDIENT in the cure, which he needs a scientist to manufacture (Mary--RIP--did it for Brenda's cure). Even that is a movie construct, lol.

    • @user-bl5yi4uw6j
      @user-bl5yi4uw6j Před 3 měsíci

      True. It's the enzyme in his blood, not the blood itself. So, someone would have to isolate the enzyme in Thomas' blood, like Mary did, to make a curative injectable. Anyway, if you inject someone else's blood, a hemolytic transfusion reaction would result where antibodies would attack the foreign blood cells to destroy them. Too much foreign blood and you run the risk of it killing you. This distinction between blood and enzyme is why at Jansen's facility, they were taking the enzyme directly for the immunes' brains. Taking it from their blood would be an unnecessary step to WCKD. The problem is, at least at this point in "Maze Runner," no one is able to replicate the enzyme artificially. Thomas' blood alone would be insufficient to save all mankind as it stands. You'd have to be able to synthesize it in quantity.
      If there ever was a fourth film, Thomas would have to regain his memory and come up with a way to synthesize his enzyme before he was inevitably killed. He is a tragic hero, after all.
