How to stop roof rack wind noise for free - Don't buy a fairing!! - Honda Ridgeline.

- I installed an OEM Honda Ridgeline roof rack on my first gen Ridgeline. There was so much wind noise - instead of buying an expensive fairing, I find this amazing trick that solved the wind noise basically for free.
This is the type of paracord I used:

Karl you are the man! I installed new cross bars on my Ford Edge which already had rails. The noise was so bad, I could not talk on my car phone. It sounded like I had a jet engine on my roof. I bought black paracord ($5 for 50 ft.) and wrapped it around the bars at about 1 1/2 inch spacings between the spirals. It knocked out 95% of the noise. I just want to let everyone know that this solution is for real and real cheap. Thanks so much. Fantastic tip!!!

Wowsa!!! My husband and I applied the paracord to our Thule crossbars on the roof rack and are on our test drive. It’s still quiet at highway speed. We can use our inside voices again in the car. Thanks; what a relief!
🙌🙌🙌🙌 worked a total treat on my Thule wingbar evo's on my transit custom. Did all three bars and the noise simply disappeared. Amazing!
This is great! Just got a new truck so needed new Yakima towers but $150 for the Yakima fairing was too much. Unreal how much this helps, thanks for sharing.

80 MPH (yes, I was speeding), radio muted, wife on the phone, and it sounded a little louder than before I installed the crossbars. How simple and cheap. Almost thought about sending the crossbars back, but they just might be here to stay. Thank you!!!

Thank you so much, Karl! This totally worked! I had taken my new ‘21 BE Ridgeline back to the dealership because of the rattling, howling wind noise. They said they couldn’t do anything about it. I tightened the screws on the ribs thinking that was the problem, but didn’t do a thing. Finally, my last ditch effort was to try this before taking off the ribs altogether. IT WORKS!! Was about to buy a rhino-Rack fairing for $100. Had some black para-cord laying around in the garage, did this and it reduced the noise enough that I scrapped buying the fairing. Still have a bit of noice because of my bike rack but wow this really works. Thanks!!

Thought about getting a windshield fairing. Saved myself $120 with this trick. Can still hear some airflow but at least it stopped the annoying howl.

Ordinarily the rack creates a vortex shedding phenomenon, that alternating vortex of the rack creates whistling and sound. When the Paracord breaks the even flow it creates turbulence which stops these vortexes
I saw that on the antenna on one of my older cars . Found out it was to reduce wind noise. Who knew?

On any flattish roof rack, because it acts as a reed. I tested it with my bagpipe tuner and the frequency was about 458 hz. Breaking up the reed with the cord raises the pitch if you don't put enough turns in it. My Suburban has round bars, so no wind noise. Karl is right; don't use flat straps to tie anything to a roof rack or the noise will be deafening at highway speeds.

It's the same concept behind the new One World Trade Center design. Break up the wind shear. Problem solved. Works like a charm, and for a lot less than a DIY wind fairing, let alone a store-bought one.

I might try this with zip ties to see if it does the same thing. Cleaning bug guts off of cord seems kinda gross after a summer of bugpocalypse.

Aha! So this is why golf balls have dimples! Makes sense.
It also probably improves fuel efficiency by a few thousandths of a percent (over standard rack).
Dimples could be for control as well.

I'm pretty sure it would help no matter what kind of rack you have. It won't eliminate the noise completely, but it will help.

I have cord on my roof rack but it still whistles. Does mine need to be looser? Do I need it to be longer for more wrap around? What could it be?
It's possible there are gaps where air is getting into the rack? That could create a whistle
What if u have several cross bars.. do I need to put it all over..?
You will need to put the rope on all of them for the best result.
*i tried the rope and it did cut down the noise but I still have a little noise it would be great if some would give me a tip please*
These are some other ideas I've heard of:
Wrap pool noodles around the cross bars; Wrap tape (like electrical tape) around every crack/seam in the rack; Install a fairing (has to be done well, otherwise the fairing can make noise).
How many turns around the roof rack do you recommend?

Hey Karl, The para cord you using is how many mm ? I’m also getting it , my thule wing bar is making me crazy after I’ve installed it yesterday.
The one I used is 1/8 in. Or 3.17 mm

Did your rack whistle or just make a loud airflow sound? My Jeep Grand Cherokee roof rack makes a whistling sound above 35 mph and its driving me nuts!
Dang, mine just makes airflow nose. Are there any holes in your rack? Like exposed screw holes or anything? I feel like that might cause whistling..
Hello, Just got my Jeep Compass with the roof racks/bar, and the same as you, the rack whistle and change the frequency according to the speed, impossible to drive in the motorway.

When arrived it was very simple to adjust and put together. I also added spike tape over the metal hooks before securing and tightening the straps, and no scratches. I also purchased the top bar made by the same company so that my cruiser sits straight on the rack without having to turn upside down. Extra bungee cords are used to secure the front wheel from flapping and even piece of mind knowing your bike is secure. Definitely recommend...

These aren't the exact ones, but they're similar - I sanded and spray painted mine.

Where do one get paracord ?
I bought this paracord at Walmart. It's always in the camping/sporting goods section as well as in the home improvement section.
It's also sold at home depot, lowes, Amazon.. a bunch of different places.

It creates turbulence, breaks up the wind vortex. So u r actually going to increase drag and fuel consumption. Just play some radio and u won't hear the noise and save $ on fuel.
