You guys should already know who Zeke is from Grisha's backstory at the end of season 3. Unless you're talking about some other detail about his past that comes later
It's ok most people are confused by the opening of this season. Incase ur confused about the timeline.
This is four years after Reiner and others failed to capture Eren from Paradis (season 3), and the result is this ongoing wars with other countries. Reiner, Gabi and the others with the armbands are Eldians just like Eren and his people (Subjects of Ymir/Spawn of the devils) but they're controlled and oppressed by Marleyan people and taught that they are the only good Eldians coz they're not from the walls. That Sabertooth titan is the Jaw titan. Ymir's titan. So we know what happen to her. 💀

Just got to the end. Y'all are talking about the scene where Zeke, with his limbs chopped off after getting torn out of the Beast Titan, is talking to Eren while he had a blade to Berthold's throat. Again... how did you not know Zeke was the Beast titan? LMAO

You're not spoiled about Zeke. His name is dropped in season 3 already. When he told Eren that he's gon rescue him, and by the time Grisha tells us that he has a son named Zeke, it's already connected right there 😂

When Reiner says "I'm tired of walls," he sees the top of the walls of Paradise with Scouts manning the cannons. Pretty much everyone misses this detail.

Guys, one line (blink and you miss it) explains the time period that the battle is taking place. The commander of the Eldian unit (not an Eldian himself but a true Marleyan) says that 9 years ago they launched a mission on Paradis to steal the Founding Titan (Colossal's initial breaking down of the wall resulting in Eren's mom being eaten), but the years-long mission ended in failure with the Marley side losing the Colossal (Bertholdt) and Female (Annie).
Imagine how humiliating it was for them the way it ended. Beast titan got soloed by Levi and had to be rescued by the dog titan. Armored titan was done in by the thunder spears and had to be rescued by the dog titan. Colossal was stolen and obtained by Armin. They have no specific knowledge of Annie's condition but assume she's held captive or dead.
The dog titan? Good grief. Use right terminology. It is the Cart Titan. And Galliard is the Jaw Titan.

You werent spoiled with Zeke. The weird dog titan literally says his name in season 3 when Bert, Reiner, and Zeke are sitting on the wall drinking coffee waiting for the scouts to show up in Shiganshina. The dog titan says "War chief Zeke" its a blink and youll miss it moment. But i would not consider you to be spoiled on his name if you heard it elsewhere after seeing that episode. In fact when Grisha announces he and Dina had a child "Zeke" its delivered to the audience in moment of realization and the end of a 2 piece puzzle. It just so happens that you both missed the first piece of the puzzle when the dog titan says War chief Zeke. I hope this helps so you dont feel like you got spoiled on something you were boths supposed to know.
You did not get spoiled by knowing who Zeke is. It is said in the last 3 episodes of season 3? and he is called by his name during the battle. Just have to put 2 and 2 together (but there is so much happening at the same time, I don't blame you guys). Not a spoil at all, don't worry.

In s3ep15, when Zeke, Reiner and Bert were drinking coffee sitting around a fire on the wall, the dog titan called Zeke by his name from the ground.
So technically, you are not spoiled. You guys ask for clarification without spoilers at the end of each reaction, so I think they just wanted to help you. 👍

This is one of the most brilliantly executed genre shifts I've ever seen. Turning AoT from a dark fantasy series revolving around humanity's fight against titans to a full-on anti-war series must've been quite a challenge. Who would have thought that AoT would one day incorporate topics such as childhood indoctrination, eugenics, historical relativism, and industrialized warfare into its narrative? I still remember watching the first season and thinking to myself: "Fuck those titans! Humanity for the win!" How naive I was.
some clarification, NO spoilers! all of this is stuff you’ve seen:
the kids you were introduced to are warrior candidates, who are competing to inherit one of the nine titans from their current holders - the curse of ymir means that as soon as someone inherits one of the nine (by eating the previous holder) they have 13 years to live (as we learned from eren recently). so, before they die, their replacements are trained, turned into “pure” titans, and are allowed to eat the current holder and thus gain their titan power in the same way that eren ate his father to get the attack titan and armin ate bertholdt to get the colossal titan.
falco, the kid with blonde hair, and gabi, the girl with auburn hair, are competing to be selected to inherit the armored titan from reiner when his 13 years are up.
what you saw happen in this episode was the end of a war that started because another country noticed that marley had lost the colossal titan (bertholdt, now with armin) and the female titan (annie, still in her crystal) and believed them weak, taking that opportunity to attack. the reason that the other warriors didn’t continue attacking the walls is because they were occupied finishing up this war, as you saw here.
hope that makes sense! and just to be clear, all of this information is stuff you have already been shown, some of it is just discussed very quickly.
My favorite part of this season is the music! It builds the tension and hype so well.

Just to clarify without spoilers. When Marley lost the Colossal and the Female Titan, other nations saw that as a sign of weakness. So the Mid East Allied Forces (another nation) declared war on them. That was the war we just saw in this episode and that's why Zeke says "This war began because of our defeat, Reiner". We're now 4 years in the future after the Battle of Shiganshina from Season 3 part 2.
Also, sending children (the 4 warrior candidates) out to war for a final exam is just something...

Zekes identify has been mentioned since season 3. The timeline of this war was mentioned and links up with the end of season 3. Season 4 is fast paced so you have to pay attention to everything (took me a few watches to get everything).

maybe the patreon folks hooked you up with the deets already. but i think all you need to know right now is that it’s been 4 years since the battle of wall maria. since they lost the female & colossal titan to Paradis (our peoples), this nation
beefing with Marley decided to pull up since they were defeated/ weaker now: so this is what we see in this episode: Marley vs. the Allied Forces. They got eldian soldiers doing all the dirty work / fighting for Marley.
also, those kids are “warrior” candidates… meaning they’re tryna inherit one of the 9.
The reveal that Zeke is Erens brother is literally the big drop at the end of season 3. Was surprised you didn’t react to that then. So you were not spoiled for season 4
Basically Marley is the nation that "defeated" eldia 100 years ago. The eldian king took some of his people and flee to island, built wall out of titans. While the other eldians lived in jail type of camp under marley where Eren's dad was born. Now marley used those eldians to built their army of titan and used it to conquer other countries. But when reiner group failed the island mission and lost 2 of their titans, colosal & annie, the rest of the world heard it and made alliance to attack marley. This episode shows how that world war ended after 4 years. So it's a 4 year jump.
It's basically a 4 years time lapse. So all the previous characters you'll see will look taller, more mature and well due to the stress, i guess a lot older, haha

Tbf about Zeke's identity, in the season 3 flashback where you see him turn in his parents, he is playing with a toy by his bed that is the form he assumed as a Titan.
As for season 4, I think it's better than 3. Like you guys said, by the time we get to ep3 on CZcams you'll have a better understanding of where they are in the timeline and more about this place that is "across the sea." And I can only assume who the person reading the newspaper is based on where the normal run of episodes for this season ends.

This is 4 years after the last episode of season 3. The kids are candidates to be the future warriors (new titan shifters) because remember each titan dies after 13 years. Also, Marley is using eldians like puppets for their own benefits more like slaves let's say. These guys on the plane are eldians ( able to become titans) and they were injected with the titan thing that they used on Eren step mom and the rest and the reason they were smiling because marley drugged them and it's basically like a death sentence. They wanted to sacrifice 800 eldians (the suicide squad) to move forward if Gabi didn't suggest she can do it alone. So marley really hate eldians but still use them like war slaves

I promise you that you're supposed to know this about him by this point:
1. He's Eren's half brother, son of Grisha Yeager and Dina Fritz (aka the Smiling Titan).
2. He's the Beast Titan, as the quadruped Titan called the Beast Titan "War Chief Zeke" back in Season 3 episode 15.
3. He has Royal blood, as Grisha held him up and went "A child with Royal blood!" When he was born back in Episode 20 of Season 3. His mother Dina was confirmed to have Royal blood multiple times in those episodes too.

in the subtitle it said, "you don't look like your father" or something,
but actually in Japanese, he didn't say anything about whos father he was pointing!
(In Japanese we can just say "father" without pointing out whos it is.)
There are few subtitles doing that might cause misunderstanding.

The info about Zeke is not a spoil, mentioned in season 3. The show gives a lot of insight and indeed sometimes you need to go back but trust us, we always have the info. But the best is coming, you will love it!
Please be kind to MAPA. This season was made during the pandemic, when the illustrators were overworked. Some episodes will have lots of stills or be lacking in quality, but we remain grateful that MAPA took on this project when no one else would. ❤
To be honest I have no problem with the art or animation of this season, I think it's beautiful. MAPPA did so good with the limitations they had.

i dont like the animations , but i like the animators. You can still see that they are great at their work through aot , even though it does look more rushed , sometimes there are less frames than needed , but their rotoscope like animation is top notch. The titans tho , their frame rate is different , at least to me , than the animated world , so they look out of place all the time
it's normal to be confused in episode 4x1 when you haven't read the manga, it wouldn't be cool to give you a hard time for it .

Basically, because Marley's first attempt to retake the Founding Titan failed (S1-3) and they lost the Female Titan and Colossal Titan, other countries realized that Marley is weaker so the Mid-East countries attacked. In regards to the "Warrior Candidates," if you remember those episodes titled "Soldier" (2x4) and "Warrior" (2x6) and how Bertholt said Reiner used to be a Warrior, but now he's just a soldier, it's a reference to what the Marleyans called the "Warrior Unit." They'll get into it more later. Gabi, Falco, Udo, Zophia, and Colt are the Warrior "Candidates" who are the next in line to inherit the Titans once their 13 years are up.
S4 here we go!! Also for some information guys
1. Yess, zeke knows eren is his half brother cause remember he said to him "i'll comeback to take you home" on s3 when he left with the dog titan. BUT, eren didnt know him (there's an ep that tells why zeke knows about him first)
2. Marley is the place where both marleyans and eldians (the subject ymir race, just like eren) lived. Remember that on grisha's flashback, all eldians are treated like shit and being used for marley's benefit only (just like this ep where all the front row soldiers are only eldians). The story will gives you more information in the future
3. This war on the fort slava happened after eren's people victory of the wall maria
4. Remember that titan has to be inherited after 13 years before the user's die. So, the kids on that war is the warriors who's ready to be inherited, the girl Gabi is the one who really wants to be the next armored titan (reiner's titan)

Paradis Island - Is where Eren and the gang lives. Also the place where the Titans that got turned by the Marleyans is sent to ‘Paradise’ .
Eldians/Subjects of Ymir - are mostly the people on the island and also the only people that can turn into Titans. Meaning quite literally anyone who is not Subjects of Ymir/Eldians even if they injected . They won’t turn into titans only Eldians/Subjects of Ymir can.
Marley/Marleyans - The place and people that is ‘outside’ of the walls. Also where Reiner, Annie and Bertholdt are from. If you remember them saying ‘let’s head back to our hometown’ they meant Marley.
again no spoilers these are information that was relayed to yall from episode 20-21. Just summarised and simplified it for yall.

nine years ago. The first attack of the colosal titan then passed five years for our Eren,Mikasa and Armin with the defeat of the armored and the colosal. When riner and the beast returned to Marley this war that you just watched started and after four years is the present with the victory of Marley aganist the allies forces
This is crazy, you're now in Season 4! The timeline is set in the present day to give some context. It's been 4 years, and Marley is now choosing the titans' successors, who are the kids at the beginning because the titans have a limited time left, therefore they're going to hand on the power. Marley postponed attacking the walls since they had been at war for 4 years. So the kids in the war are the new generation of Eldians who, like Reiner and Zeke, support Marley.
I understand your confusion, we've all been there. This is my favorite season!
17:20 they switched animation studio because the original one responsible for the previous seasons couldn't handle the work load of season 4. therefore the animation style is very different

Marley was at war with this other country for 4 years, that is, it has been 4 years since season 3. The world outside of Paradis is not set in the present day, let's say that in our timeline they are somewhere between 1930 and 1940, given the environment and dynamics between Marleyans and Eldians so WW2 (cough cough, Jews, cough cough). Also in Paradis they are technologically a century behind, they must be somewhere in the 18th-19th century
This is more WWI, late 1910s. They were using trench warfare, and the Marleyan uniforms were very WWI Germany.
The blast in shinganshina from Bertolt leveled around a mile radius. So roughly the size of the US militaries biggest conventional bomb the MOAB . Around 18,000lbs of explosives. For more context the largest US bomber in World War 2 was the B-29 which could carry 40x 500lb bombs, so 20,000lbs of explosives. A potent weapon even by modern standards.
Here r some non-spoiler facts to know abt this season:
-There r 9 different types of special titans:
one of them is the saber tooth one u was talking abt lol
-The people of this new place (Marley) are called Marleyans and the people born in the place within the walls (Eldia) like Eren, are called eldians.
-Marley has some arm bands
red armand means honorary marleyan
yellow means warrior cadet
white means citizen

Those parachuting eldians are not Titans. They are Eldians that were given something that allows Zeke to turn them into titans. Eldians are not inherently titans. They are people first, but the founder rewrote the genetics so that only eldians react when given titan spinal fluid. Its what the king did when he created the VOW renouncing war. Just rewrote the behavior of being a pacifist into the user of the next founding titan users essentially setting them up for failure. Basically placing a password lock on the powers.
"Eldians are not inherently titans." ~Exactly!! They can't turn into Titans out of their own will. Otherwise they would have rebelled by now. Marleyans have nothing to fear because they control the distribution of the spinal fluid.

I didnt know that people thought of it that way until my buddy had watched the series and said "Well eldians are all titans so why doesnt Connie, Sasha, and Jean use their powers?" I was kinda dumb founded by the statement but I understand where he got the idea. Its when Sgt Major Gross in Grishas backstory episode says "Thats what your kind really is" when showing a titan he just created using the syringe. I had to explain to my friend that Marlians are just being assholes when they say shit like that.

AOT is a prequel to the Call of Duty storyline, which is the origin arc for the “green guy” Blanka from Street Fight, who’s true form is a Titan, and who partners up with an elephant-orangutan-man to defeat M. Bison (you can see him on one of the ships.)

A confusing detail (if you didn't figure it out) about S4 is why Eldians are helping Marley when back in the big S3 reveal it was learned that Marley defeated Eldia in the Great Titan War with Eldia's King Fritz retreating his people to Paradis island. So why are the conquered helping the conquerors? Grisha's backstory explains it. All Eldians serving Marley are internment zone Eldians, as Grisha was early in life. Marley both despises these people yet needs them since only Eldians can be turned into titans (a valuable biological weapon in war). So Marley incentivizes these Eldians to donate their children to Marley's military for a chance to become "warriors" - highly trained elites who might inherit one of Marley's titans. In return, the families of these kids get to live a much higher standard of life compared to ordinary internment zone Eldians (and remember they live poor).
Reiner, Bertholdt, Annie, Reiner's friend who got eaten by Ymir, Zeke, etc. were all once such children who earned a titan. Gabby, Falco, etc. are the current generation of Eldian children competing to inherit the armored titan (and yes, they "inherit" it the same way Armin inherited the Colossal and Grisha inherited the Attack Titan from Eren Kruger/the owl). The future beast titan has already been appointed to Colt (the older, teenage one amongst the trainees) for when the time comes. The time comes when a Nine titan lives out their 13 year lifespan after inheriting it and the power must be passed on before this or else it'll go to a random Eldian newborn somewhere on Earth.
The officer class of the Marley military are true Marleyans but most of those that do the heavy fighting and dying are internment zone Eldian units. There are also regular rank-and-file Marleyan soldiers but they rarely fight in the vanguard (where casualties are highest). Eldian units meanwhile are disposable and sent in as the first wave.
Lastly, this dog titan with the machine gun turret on its back is the same dog titan that rescued Zeke.
I mean knowing who Zeke is once you’ve watched the end of season 3 it’s not a spoiler but that said in my first watch of the show I didn’t catch it also if you didn’t know season 4 animation is different because they switch studios from Wit to Mappa

Just to clarify and its not a spoiler. Zeke and eren are not step brothers. They are half brothers. Grisha is the father of both of them. And yes, zeke knows that eren is his brother.
