One thing I notice about traditional Japanese clothing that I find is different than the old English clothing. is how they do not dramatize the proportions of the body. non of the waste accentuation no bustles or bust lifts. it’s all about the cloths themselves the fabrics and simple patterns and how specifically they must be warn. their all quite modest I don’t know if this was on purpose but it is a very fascinating culture difference.

I recently purchased a haori and was looking for all the proper garments (and how wear them) to wear for a nice formal outfit if and when I go to Japan or a formal Japanese ceremony in the States. All your videos truly show how beautiful the concept of wabi sabi is interwoven in everything the Japanese do. Each fold and tie has a purpose and reason, when done completely shows the elegance of not just the garment but the process in itself. Out of curiosity, is it true that with the hakama you should maintain your pleats as each one represents a virtue and in some way, much like tying a knot, shows your regard for said virtue and that of the ones around you? (Basically dress the best you). Thank you again for this well illustrated education video. Best health and well wishes.
Wore mine for the first time today (for Hatsumode) with the help of this video and it worked great, even had random people come up to me wanting to take a picture with me!
So the way the Hakama ties on, if you needed to use the bathroom you could just pull up one leg to go. (modern Hakama have zippers in front) But if you need to do the other thing, you just untie the last part of the Hakama the the backside will fall down enough to do your business. You don't even need to take the Hakama all the way off it seems. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong

@@wkimono I have a couple questions about the kimono. Is the kimono a thin or a thicker lined style? Is the kimono split at the bottom so you have two leg portions? I know that some hakama are split into two legs.
@@michaelholton3448 The kimono goes down to the ankle. When you wear kimono and Hakama, pull bottom rear of Hakama and tuck over and inside obi. So you can be flexible and poop. Make sure you wear underwear because when sitting, you can see under Hakama.
In case of hakama & pee, hakama's hem is wide enough to pull out the thing. In case of hakama & poo, untie the second knot in front, and take off the board on the back, so that your hip shows up.
We can wear hakama with haori or without haori, depending on the situation. Basically it's formal with haori. But you need to take off haori when you enter tea room in tea ceremony though it's formal.

It's formal to wear a hakata, it's like wearing a tie in western fashion. We wear hakama at some ceremonies.
