"Oh no, not a genealogy!!" - Exodus

Have you ever got to the critical moment of a film or a TV show, only to find it interrupted by an ad-break? You might think this passage in Exodus is similar - it seems to interrupt the action. What's the point of genealogies? And why is there a genealogy here?

I have heard it said the the genealogies attest to the reality and authenticity and truth of the Bible. They offer that actual people, all these traceable people did indeed exist, have real lives and carried out the purposes of God in the Bible. If men wrote the Bible (and not by inspiration of the Holy Spirit) they would never have bothered with the genealogies due to tedium writing and researching them would require.
