It was always obvious to me that Thanos was not a villain. Thanos spared the lives of the Avengers multiple times. Even when he stabbed Stark the wound was not fatal. He did not completely crush War Machine, and didn't kill Captain America when he had multiple opportunities. He could have crushed Wanda's head like a grape as well when taking Vision's infinity stone. Instead he petted her like a dog. He phased Banner into rock but didn't kill him, and spared Dr. Strange and the Guardians of the Galaxy too. Thanos believed that what he was doing was best for the universe. Deranged? Yes, but not pure evil.

I mean it would still be an incredibly stupid plan, even if he snapped half the population of every planet to prevent the celestials from being birthed, they would get back to that population before long anyway, and the same thing would happen. It's a little more intelligent than the whole "resource deprivation" motive, but it's still incredibly stupid. This is honestly the issue with making bad narrative decision's, even if you slightly retcon it down the line, it doesn't make much more sense, especially because he destroyed the infinity stones, perhaps the only things capable of dealing with the celestials, when he was done.
Thanos purpose in the MCU was apparently to be a very dangerous idiot with no understanding of population dynamics or the long term effects of his actions... I don't think you can argue his actions were benevolent, because he would have been granting those people a relatively short (compared to the grand scale of the universe) number of year's at best, meanwhile the people living on those planets are now going to come after him with a vengeance and try to reverse what was happening (he could have used the mind stone to erase their memory of the people gone at least). What he could have done was find a way to permanently limit those populations, or to increase the number of resources, or any number of things that make more sense. If he had spent half the time crusading around the universe as he had converting people to his cause and teaching them his ideology, he probably would have been far more successful.
Thanos is the perfect example of a great character that was misused by the writer's 😐

I don't know if this has been addressed in the comments yet, but Strange, Stark, Parker and the Guardians were *ON* Titan with Thanos when he told his story. You show footage of an emergence bursting the host world apart completely, so I do think there's still a big continuity issue. Plus, if you make Thanos' mission about preventing the emergences in order to preserve the lives of the people that would die, then you have to ignore that many worlds that got affected by the snap are not seed worlds.
Ultimately, the snap cost a lot more lives than it would have to let the emergences play out. Trying to save Titan by reducing its population? Sure. But his subsequent mission falls apart, narratively speaking, especially since the snap doesn't prevent the Eternals from pushing overpopulation again. Their missions just got 50% longer, which is nothing if you have literal eternal life.
As for why Starfox didn't stop Thanos from wiping out half of all sentient life in the universe, how about because the writers hadn't thought of him yet at that point? Some characters that get shoehorned in just can't be made to work in the context of what has come before, no matter how much you retcon. That applied to Captain Marvel, when she had been there during the ninetees all of a sudden, and it applies to the Eternals just as well, who are on a mission to push overpopulation but aren't allowed to intervene when someone tries to achieve the opposite.

  • @JonnyLin7
    @JonnyLin7 Před 2 lety +448

I have to say I'm really glad they deleted a lot of these scenes.
The Thanos retcon would be awful. We spend multiple movies understanding Thanos' rationale and he specifically talks about the reason he believes overpopulation is a problem is there are finite resources that can sustain the population and this was the reason the population on Titan became extinct. There was never once anything about how overpopulation results in celestials being born and that is what destroys planets. Also, in Eternals, it clearly show that the entire planet gets destroyed during the birth of a celestial, not just the population. Titan is clearly still around, the population was just wiped out, so it wasn't a celestial being born that destroyed it.
I think a better explanation would be that the original Eternals sent to Titan rebelled against Arishem (or another celestial that sent them there) and prevented the birth of the celestial there. Eros and Thanos are not Eternals sent there, but instead the children of an Eternal, similar to the comics, but unlike the comics, they are half titan as well. They would have been born after the original Eternals on Titan prevented the celestial being born. Thanos is eventually banished from Titan because of his proposal to kill half the population, but Eros remained there. Since the planet wasn't destroyed by the birth of a celestial it allowed it to grow in population to the point where it ran out of resources to sustain the population. Prior to the population of Titan being wiped out, some of the residents managed to evacuate. Eros' Eternal parent, who could also be the prime Eternal for Titan, chose to remain on Titan and sent Eros off planet, also passing on the prime eternal title onto him. Shortly before he was evacuated, his Eternal parent could have explained the Eternals on Titan's original mission and their origins, which would include the world forge. Eros is now looking for other Eternals on other planets across the galaxy, which is why he wasn't there to help stop Thanos. After Professor Hulk's snap to bring back the other half of the population, he went track down the Eternals on Earth, knowing they'd have a large and intelligent enough population to birth a celestial.
    This would explain:
-How Thanos and Eros are brothers but Thanos didn't know or mention the Eternals in IF and Endgame
-Why Eros has more knowledge about Eternals and Celestials than Earth's eternals
-How Eros is able find the Earth's eternals and why he's deciding to seek them out now
-Why Eros wasn't around to help stop Thanos

Great summation of points and ideas.
Obviously, Marvel had quite a lot to do in order to clean all of this up. Your explanation of Titan's demise and Thanos's plan is much better than what was given to us here in this video breakdown. As you said, Thanos had a specific reason for wanting to eliminate half of the Universe's population, which had nothing to do with an 'Emergence'.

It wasn't a bad movie...it was just SOOOO much going on. Justice League did this as well, but the thing is...most of us are very familiar with Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Aquaman, etc...so cramming them all into one movie wasn't as bad as Eternals who not only had more characters, but they're also lesser known Comic book characters in general.
So I would have preferred if Eternals was a Series or a multi part film explaining the individual Eternals and the many...many...many time lines they lived in.

So many times in that movie some on screen character would be crying but us in the audience did not feel a thing because we just didn't have any investment in them. And for every 5 minutes of action there was 20 minutes of slow, boring dialog and exposition. Another cool video! Thanks! Two questions though:
    1) If Eternals are created to blend in with the population of their host planet, why does Starfox look human. Did people on Titan look human? I assume they did, just based on the few comic book images in the video, but just checking.
    2) In the alternate ending Tiamat emerged and Earth was destroyed, making the story of the Eternals belong to an alternate universe in the multiverse. But is this possibly still the case, even though Earth was not destroyed? Are there any confirmations/Easter eggs in Spiderman, Hawkeye of a giant stone titan in the Indian ocean? I don't remember. Maybe the Eternals are STILL in an alternate universe and they will crossover with the main MCU in a future movie.

They made the eternals robots instead of actual living organisms like they were in the comics and not only that, star fox and thanos are suppose to be brothers in the MCU like in the comics but star fox is a robot whereas thanos was actually a living organism in the MCU since we saw his flesh cut open and saw him bleed. We even saw his arm get burnt damaged and bruised after he used the gauntlet in infinity war. If they just went with the comics explanation of the eternals being early humans that were experimented on by the celestials it would've made more sense instead they had to add all this robot fuckery which is gonna end up confusing the hell out of people. Who ever takes over the eternals in the future needs to fix all the plot inconsistencies that the director created which is why the eternals movie got low ratings and didn't make as much money as the other MCU projects this year eventhough it had the most potential.

To that respect, that Thanos sort of carries this supposed deviant gene appearance, what if part of the problem on Titan is that deviants grew in knowledge and even attempted mating? Similar to the evolutionary scheme of the deviants on earth: they grew in knowledge and articulated purpose as they developed under the eternals power into their own narrative of revenge.
Thanos could be a hybrid eternal due to a super weird backstory that isn’t revealed yet. Heck, Areshim already stated that he lost control of deviants at one point in history and therefore made the eternals to hunt them. Not only that, but he says he made the eternals incapable of evolution. But as we can see, there is a developed free will in the eternals that turned around and stopped the emergence; proving that, once again, a celestial can lose control of its creation. This would edify the possibility that deviants could have mated with titans - maybe even to have the reverse effect during an emergence. What if the deviants had knowledge that higher levels of deviant life would birth a deviant celestial and by doing so, maybe raise an army of celestial that could fight against Areshim in order to exact their revenge - as stated in the Eternals movie.
