    Master the friction zone | What's the secret?
    You practice all the slow riding techniques...Head and eyes looking where you want to go, Friction zone, little throttle, little pressure on the rear brake, but you are still not smooth enough.
    Here we show you how to Master The Friction Zone, Including one technique police motor officers learn in the first week in motor school.
    Enjoy and go out and try it, your Friction zone riding will become much more smoother.
    Tanks for watching.

    Becoming a more safer and smoother rider doesn't happen by accident. Practice just once a week even if you only have a 5 - 10 minutes.
    Try this technique, and you WILL notice an improvement your skills.
    I'm not saying Never use your brakes....By all means use them if you must...Just slightly less pressure.

      so true! Just 5-10 minutes practice makes a difference. Been riding since 2014 but never practiced slow speed stuff and always struggled until watching technique videos. Simple stuff like turning my head and eyes and the friction zone mastery helps so much with slow speed stuff. Kinda feels like learning how to ride all over again, keeping it exciting :). Great video and tips

    Excellent video! I remember when I took the M.S.C. our instructor touched on the friction zone, explaining the clutch to throttle ratio. I use the latter of the technics, let me explain...I'm a shorter rider with a big bike Harley Road Glide Special, so being able to maneuver, in tight areas is a must. thats where mastering the friction zone comes in handy.
    P.S. I fact checked myself last night, 10 pm practicing the "zone" U turns and circles! thanx again for the videos Rich n Kake, Keep up the good work....#BootsandJeans

      Hey Dave Appreciate the insightful comment. Fact checking is always good, Most think that if they get something right one time it should be enough. However motorcycle are a different monster. I always said "getting it right once is luck, 2 - 10 times is gaining experience, 10 or more times without mistakes...that's skills".
      Keep it up my brother and continue to fact check yourself.

    New rider here, dropped the MSF supplied bike 2x during the 2nd day u-turn drills. I struggled with it all morning. In the afternoon, when it came time for the test, I nailed it and I don’t really know how. I have an idea how but don’t know for sure. I think I rolled on the throttle a little before I started my u-turn so I had the power when I needed it. I never tried using the rear break, I’m looking forward to practicing this. I bought some flat cones so I can practice but I’m so afraid of dropping my bike, which is a heck of o lot bigger and heavier (cruiser) than the MSF supplied Yamaha 250, and the bike is flat out gorgeous. I’m thinking about getting a practice bike until I know what I’m doing before I practice on my baby. Thanks for putting these videos out there for ppl like me who can draw on experienced riders.

      Our course is forcing us to use the rear brake and feather it instead of using the hand brake. Course bike is a 250. My bike is a 693 but with eco mode to make it way less power. I’m struggling super hard on my first day with the friction zone and them not letting us use the hand brake for the most of it. Hoping these videos help. I almost quit half way through today. I’ve been riding mine no issues on country roads and in town. Idk why it’s so much harder on a small bike.

    You made a good point about doing the U turn without the brake. I always find myself relying on the rear brake during the turn which makes the bike want to stand up so I have to add clutch and throttle to make it through. I’m going to try your way next time thanks for taking the time to make this New Subscriber. Ride safe.

    • @BootsandJeansRiders
      @BootsandJeansRiders  Před 4 lety +3

      You're exactly correct...Too much brake stands the bike up and the slower you go it wants to tip over.
      Hard braking also makes it more jerky. Little presure braking or no brakes will make the turns much smoother.
      When you start, use a large 30'+ U-turn without brakes then bring it in to the 24' as you get comfortable.

    Telling you, here in Sweden it's not really allowed - more than just occasionally - to use the rear brake at the creep zig-zag test. To get the rider's licence. I haven't understood why, since the RB supplies stability, but this was a wake-up call for me. One must control every situation behind the handlebar.

      Definitely give it a try. You'll find with just a little practice, you will get much smoother riding in the friction zone without the breaks. Then using the breaks (only as needed) will enhance the friction zone.

    I did a moto course and failed it miserably and they sent me home, I couldn't get the clutch and shifting down pat but I would have if I had tons of practice but I never had any practice whatsoever. I Felt like a fool in front of everyone because they had lot's of practice and I never had any practice whatsoever. But I know I learned a few things like balancing the bike and NOT once did I ever drop the bike and that was my very first time ever on a bike so I guess it wasn't a total loss.

      Don't worry? many of us have been in that situation. We know ppl who were in their 60s and the first time on a bike was the basic riding course. It's the love for the ride that you have that will pay off in the long run.

      @@BootsandJeansRiders Yeah, My experience with that course I failed was a terrible nightmare. I felt intimidated, discouraged, rushed and out of place. I thought that course was a training course to learn how to ride a motorcycle but actually that course was nothing but a SKILLS TESTING COURSE. Their title was misleading and definitely NOT a training course for people who know nothing about riding a motorcycle. There were 3 of us in the course and I was paired with experienced riders and those other 2 knew exactly how to handle a motorcycle and I didn't. To top it all off, to make matters worse to add to my discouragement one of the instructors that was arrogant and very cocky in my opinion-The arrogant and cocky instructor said for me to take my Harley back to the dealership and ask for my money back-Talk about destroying a persons confidence. That instructor in my opinion was very unprofessional and had no right to say that to me. There were two instructors there and one of them was a very nice guy but the other one not so much. I paid a lot of money to learn to ride a motorcycle and all I got was a very stressful day and a waste of money.

    I agree. Ive been riding off and on all my life. But the last say 2 years Ive been street riding more seriously. Learning to be seen etc. But I noticed the need to drag the brake thing didn't apply to me usually because I can control that strictly with the clutch. For many riders that might not be the same though. I spent countless hours on dirt bikes and dual sport bikes over the years and probably mastered those skills as a result of controlling crashes in ruts n stuff. I mean by that preventing crashes with skilled riding. But even now I find clutch control, controlled braking and throttle control to be the 3 things that make it where that bike is under MY command! On a personal note I would say this. I'm very thankful that I spent many years on bikes out of traffic learning skills. I would highly recommend new riders spend the first year or even 2 on dirt out of traffic learning the control stuff. Ive seen new riders hurt. Ive seen 1st and 2nd year riders killed in traffic. I honestly think the safest way to get through the first year or 2 is off road and out of traffic situations. But that's me...

    • @BootsandJeansRiders
      @BootsandJeansRiders  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks Jeff...You definitely have an advantage on many riders. I tell riders to always control the slow speed with the rear brake until they master the friction zone. Then not much rear braking is needed, (if any) just great clutch control.
      I wish I would have started on a dirt track bike with no traffic around.

I hop into parking lots like behind a Kohls or something all the time and do a few practice circles, u-turns, turning from a stop, and panic braking for a few minutes but I always drag that rear brake or cover it at least. Interesting. I was taught to do all kinds of slow speed maneuvers by two motor cops and those guys stressed the use of the brake with the friction zone. I’ll have to try this technique. I’m used to turning the bike in slightly less than 24 feet though. I learned on the width of two parking spaces. I just don’t see how I can do that without the rear brake but I’m going to try it. Thanks for the tip

      @BootsandJeansRiders  Před 4 lety +1

      Hey Leadfooty Thanks for watching.
      And your instructors are correct...Remember what is being done here isn't for people that is just learning to use the friction zone. I'm sure you will be able to do this with no problem. Not all police schools are alike, this is what was taught the first week of motor school here in Oakland Ca. It was implemented for those the were using too much braking and could couldn't complete the basic turns. As the school continues, only then the rear brake was reintroduced and the riders became more proficient. And of course I wouldn't recommend holding out the leg.(it was for the video) On 18' turns I use my rear brake also but only use very light pressure.

    Hey just a couple points the Goldwing has linked brake system which means the front and back apply when you hit the rear brake. And also I'd be extremely careful using the front brake only if you're turning and not on Solid Ground.

    • @BootsandJeansRiders
      @BootsandJeansRiders  Před 4 lety +1

      Hey Pat thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
      Yes, I am aware of the linked braking system on the wing. Although it may be engaged, it isn't a major factor when riding at slow speeds. And that's a good point about using the front brake only while turning. And as you stated, especially if you're not on solid ground. Thanks!
      This demo was to show that you can control your slow speed u-turns without any braking, only using the friction zone. No front brakes were used at any point during the turns.
