🙌🙌🙌
Love it 😊
I think the most popular British sandwich is White sliced bread ,butter, mature cheddar cheese with a layer of Spanish onion slipped in between ..as not every sandwich is planned and you can’t always rely on Richard Branson being in the pantry, Spanish onions are a staple..
Spanish onions are not a staple in my pantry! Nor is Richard Branson, lol!
@@MagentaOtterTravels Avacado’s aren’t a staple in my pantry, i know Britain is only a small island ,but ive never seen Richard Branson at all, which is surprising really..considering he is British…but since buying Necker Island maybe he’s not around so much..so really Spanish Onions are a good standby,we believe they have magical qualities for our health..
My favourite sandwich is cheese and pickle ( there are other brands of this sweet pickle other than Brantson's but Branston's is the most famous . Also as a cheese and onion sandwich lover too , I can assure everyone it doesn't need to be Spanish onion. Local grown onions or onions from anywhere are just as delicious :)
@@mynameisGail be aware of smooth Branston pickle…it has no crunch….i can’t eat it..
@@griswald7156 Oh I love both the smooth and none smooth sweet pickle on a sandwich. A cheese and pickle sandwich made with a generous spreading of butter and a generous serving of good old British mature chedder . Heavenly food 😋
You could also try toasting a cheese & pickle sandwich, to experience everything that Branston has to offer!! 😋😋😋
Well, melted cheese is my love language! Lol
@@MagentaOtterTravels
Branston also works with cheese ON toast, as well as toasted sandwiches (Branston on first, then cheese, or it'll burn!)
Oohhhh, it's a relish/chutney!! Good to know! Always thought it was the pickles/gerkins famously known in the US. Keith and Keli are SUCH good sports...I admire their tenacity.
Yes, they really were very kind and very brave indeed! I didn't realise how picky Keli was, so she was super nice to play along!!
It is always hard to describe Branston pickle to an American. The best thing to do is try it! In the US, I can usually find it in supermarkets like Kroger that have a British section, or at World Market .
Have done the picnic thing on a nearby grass patch so many times 😄 So English....always bring a blanket to sit on !!
Yes we have a great little picnic blanket and it gets lots of use! 👍
What a beautiful spot for a picnic! The brave food testers are back for more!
They were seriously such good sports! I didn't realise how picky Keli was 🤣
You've got the small chunk Branston - now try the small chunk Piccalilli (also made by Branston). It goes well on nice ham or beef sandwiches - try not to be put off by its luminous appearance.
I had never heard of piccalilli until a couple years ago, when some other subscribers told me to try it. It is a very British condiment, as we never see it in the states. I think it's delicious!
@@MagentaOtterTravels There was a comedy TV series about pickles called Nearest and Dearest.
Another 'satisfying' sandwich is cheese and beetroot. Use a decent quality Cheddar, Double Gloucester or Red Leicester or whatever type of cheese you prefer, providing it's a hard cheese, cover the cheese with beetroot - and this is the bit where food purists and epicures will collapse in horror, because the beetroot you should use is sliced and pickled in jars. One tip is to make sure each slice of beetroot should be drained as much as possible back into the jar before you transfer it to your sandwich, or when you take a bite you'll very likely find a trail of drips down your front. Mind you, they will be magenta.
@@chrisaskin6144 😂😂
@@chrisaskin6144 ha ha, I love it! Since I'm usually wearing a magenta shirt, maybe it won't stain too badly 🤣💖
Branston also does Piccalilli, the yellow pickle. My favourite.
I will have to introduce some Americans to that next summer! I do think it's pretty delicious 😋
Piccadilly has a shelf life i find it goes a bit watery a week or so after opening and I can’t finish the jar..
But it is an excellent accompaniment to a well crafted cheese butty..Bloomer loaf maybe..?
The Gentlemans Relish and, Green Tomato Chutney also go well with Cheddar, and Double Gloucester.
Oh that sounds nice! Americans really don't eat chutney very much. They do not know what they are missing! I just bought some chutneys at Aldi (they call them "spread" here in the states)... that video is coming out Friday!
Best cheese with pickle is Wensleydale for me...yum yum 😋😍
Thanks for the suggestion! I'll have to try that 👍
Cracking cheese Gromit. 🧀😁
@@Poliss95 absolutely!
I feel so sorry for the USA not having Branston. 😭😭😭How do you manage without it???
Love Branston. Fine with Cheddar. Not keen on Double Gloucester. It's not strong enough for me. My favourite is Cheshire cheese. It's been ages since I had any as it's soooo expensive now.
Cheshire and branston 👌🏻 you have immaculate taste! Sod the price, just treat yourself!
Or real cheese. 🧀 😬
Good video very calming nice scenary Dara good video 👍
You and you're friends stay safe
Thanks, James! Trying to stay safe till we get back to Texas later this week. The past two years when I have returned to Texas at the end of the summer I have been really sick upon arrival!
I hope your friends enjoyed Highclere. My sister and l took our niece by marriage who is American, and a huge Downton Abbey fan , to visit a few years ago. I don’t watch it but l really enjoyed the Tutankhamen exhibition.
They loved it. We didn't think it was quite as amazing as they did... but it was the first English manor house they had ever visited, and we have seen loads of amazing homes. We are pretty spoilt 😉. I will do a video about our visit one of these years...
I did not know that swede is also call a rutabaga.
We also have something like the cheese and pickle sandwich. But the pickles would be green. Mustard pickles. Also a bit like chutney or relish. It can sometimes have similar ingredients to the Branston pickles but with cucumber and mustard and turmeric. Often it would be in a cheese and pickle toastie. A toasted sanger - toasted sandwich. I had them more often when I was younger. We'd also have cheese and vegemite sandwiches. But we wouldn't toast those. That would be weird. 😂
The mustard pickle thing you describe, is that like British piccalilli?
@@MagentaOtterTravels I think it is.
Ian's expression at 1:19 looks like they stole his lunch. lol

I was in the local deli the other week, and what did I see... Branston Pickle Small Chunk. 345peso, about 4.88GBP. I've just looked on Amazon and they've got a pack of two for 14.99. Looks like I got a bargain. :-)
Good find!
@@MagentaOtterTravels Not so good. I looked again after posting and the Amazon is 720g. Mine is 360g. Can't be bothered to do the math(s).
@@Beejay950 lol I get it!
You should try a good crunchy vintage cheddar and marmalade. Yummy!
That sounds good!
I just bought myself a bottle of Highclere gin. Maybe I will visit one day, it looks glorious. Love branston and Lancashire cheese. I am Lancastrian.
It's good to be loyal! I live in Gloucestershire and eat lots of double Gloucester cheese 😉. But honestly I would love to try Lancashire cheese. What's it like?
@@MagentaOtterTravels white crumbly, like wensleydale. or there are a couple of firmer varieties. crumbly lancs and wensleydale are my faves.
@@elliotgeorge999 does the crumbly texture make it hard to put in a sandwich?
yes a bit tricky but if you grow up with it you know to pat the bread down to prevent too much loss. ha@@MagentaOtterTravels
@@elliotgeorge999 yes, and maybe use a liberal amount of butter as glue? Lol
I can't imagine people not liking pickle ( or chutney, or relish). I so enjoy making my own in summer season when the fresh products are at the least expensive. I even hunt for the damaged vege section and have the saddest looking kitchen bench once I get to shipping and peeling. I'm thrilled your guests played along- as well as with the marmite tasting. Well done. Happy cheese and pickle days. 👌🇳🇱🤣🇳🇿
I love that you buy "wonky" vegetables and make chutney from them! Well done, you!
Love the dog running around before doing as it's told.

I'm from Texas too & I'm going to move to London soon & I'm soooo excited. I just found your channel today & your videos are awesome, thanks! I'll have to try a cheese & pickle sandwich when I get there
Oh my goodness, we need to be friends! I hope you subscribe and check out some of my other videos. I haven't done loads about London, but a few. And certainly I have lots of videos of places you need to visit outside London when you go on holiday 😉. Thanks so much for your comment! Cheers! Dara
I was at a wedding there 11 years ago during the August Bank Holiday, they hired the whole castle and Fiona , Lady Carnarvan mixed amongst us throughout to make sure everything was going well 👍
Wow, that sounds like an expensive wedding! 😳
@MagentaOtterTravels they were both Barristers Dara , I can't bring myself to say how much to hire but I guess anyone can ask ...Bank Holiday the castle closed to the public, imagine ...it was very, very stunning though & we had access to the Egyptian collection downstairs in the basement too 😀
@@kathchandler4919 wow, I can't believe you also could view the king tut exhibit! That really is incredible! Yes, I have done research in the past on wedding venues in Britain and they have their prices online. It's fun to see all the options!
@MagentaOtterTravels I & my girls have also had the privilege of visiting the Tutankhamen exhibition in Cairo too though, we're very lucky ❤️
@@kathchandler4919 oh, that's amazing! I saw the traveling exhibition when it came through Chicago back when I was a teenager
Mmmmm delicious, I'm starving now
I haven't eaten since dinner last night, so I'm pretty hungry too ;-)
Hiya Dara, I like cheese and pickle sandwiches, there my favourite, I hope your friends enjoyed them too,I don't really care for Wholemeal or brown bread, this is Choppy in Whitehaven, Cumbria, England
I love granary bread with seeds... yum! But honestly, I will eat cheese and pickle on any type of bread!
You remind me, I still need to visit the cheese shop in Cheltenham!
Yes you should! 💖
I hope they're enjoying England. Have a wonderful time
They loved it! Their first visit here, but always talking about how they wanted to come back 💖
I was wondering what was so terrific about pickle and cheese sandwich until you said the ingredients😂 sounds good
It's really hard to describe to Americans. But it is very tasty!
My kids and I love plowman pickles and cheese but we can only get it in the US at Publix and Harris Teeter for a ridiculous price so I’m going to make my own
Great idea!
Gotta try a ham & cheese toastie (Breville) with English Mustard on it next !
Sounds good!
Such a simple fare, but so tasty, my hubby makes the best ones...
Hiya. Now they have to try Cheese & Piccalilli sandwiches. Stay safe. All the best to you.
Yes, yes they do! 👍
Sorry to be playing catch-up, Dara. We've had such a busy week! This was a fun taste test. Well done to the brave volunteers 👍😁
No need to apologise! I'm having a busy week too, packing up and getting ready to fly back to Texas! Thanks for watching our little taste test ;-) They were VERY good to try both yummy things like Branston pickle as well as awful things like Marmite!
Those sarnies look top quality.
They were delicious, but the ones that were even better were the cheese & pickle sarnies in my Hay on Wye video... the ones I dumped in the gutter. I was GUTTED. I was so upset to waste all that brilliant Double Gloucester cheese I'd just bought from the owner of Smart's farm in Gloucestershire where it is made. Such a crime against food.
I pleased your friends from Texas are experiencing nice weather at least in this video, interestingly I’ve noticed a frequent & intensive tv advertising campaign promoting Texas for Britons’ to visit, showing healthy young Texans/Americans in the activities of horse back riding/English style soccer games/ deafening, raucous music concerts/surfing in an artificial pool/ I shout at the tv that none of these activities are my type of holiday.
Yes, that's funny! Certain parts of Texas are nice to visit, but I would confess Dallas really isn't. I would recommend San Antonio or Austin. But definitely not in the summer! Lol
You don't get Double Gloucester in the US? I'd have thought it would be a nature flavour Americans would love - that and Red Leicester
I can find double Gloucester in the US, but definitely not single Gloucester. Double Gloucester is only sold in the expensive imported cheese section. It's not in the normal cheese section like it is in Britain. Same with Red Leicester. It looks like American cheddar cheese from Wisconsin, but you can't find it in the normal cheese section.
Mmm cheese and pickle! Perfect spot for it! What, not allowed? Picked a great second spot though. This is not a gherkin which is also good! Suede, cauli and carrot? What a mix! Great taste off
Yes, Highclere Castle is quite the place... they don't allow any filming or photography in the house at all, which of course I found most annoying! The place is super busy and crowded, and they don't want the riffraff sitting around the lawn having a picnic 🙄
But thankfully there was plenty of grassy area beyond the car park, so we made it work 😉
It's because the family probably live there, and filming isn't allowed in most stately homes..You can go around Sandringham rooms, but not bedrooms, at the late Queen and family Summer residence when the family aren't there of course @@MagentaOtterTravels
@@margaretflounders8510 I have been to countless manor houses and castles in which the family still live in part of it. I know that they always use that as an excuse why you can't even take a single photo, but it really is terribly disappointing for all us visitors who pay good money to walk through those rooms! To be honest, I got even more than attitude about this after visiting Arundel castle, where the family still lives and continues to use the rooms that are open to the tour... but they let you take photos and video!
Cheese and pickled beetroot sandwiches are refreshing too.
Sounds good! Love a nice magenta pickled beetroot dish 😉... M&S has a lovely beet root coleslaw.
Hiya. I find just cooked, non-pickled, beetroot is better with cheese. But each to his own. All the best.
Now you see Wills would have put the crisps within the sandwich! Oo the chutney has gone down better than Marmite did! Cool test! Cheers 🍻
Ian was in the background sticking crisps inside his sandwich 🥪😉
How far is Highclere Castle from Cheltenham? I'm really wanting to visit
About an hour and 15 minute drive. Are you a big Downton Abbey fan?
@@MagentaOtterTravels I am, I loved everything about it. I will look for a coach trip
Great picnic spot! Ok did I miss the pickle? Got cauliflower, onion, rutabaga… It sounds great either way! Nice you can share your second home with friends.~Cara 🌺
As Americans, we think pickle = cucumber. Of course, lots of things can be pickled... in Britain it is very common to eat pickled onions and pickled eggs and pickled beetroot. The Branston pickle actually does not have any cucumbers in it! It's really like a delicious chutney. I also really like red onion chutney on sandwiches...
@@MagentaOtterTravels Yes…silly me! 😂
I always have mustard pickle. Extra Mature Cheddar is the best cheese of all.

It looks like the cheese and pickle sandwiches were more successful than the Marmite on toast. Branston pickle does make a good partner for cheddar cheese.
Yes, we definitely had a much better, more positive reaction to the cheese and pickle than the marmite! Lol
Careful you dont buy the macerated branston…i love the chunky branston….but i bought a puréed one one day….i had to dispose of the whole jar..

Interesting. I've never heard of it.
Pan Yan has been discontinued. It had a vague curry flavour in there somewhere. Lovely.
Cheese and pickle sandwich is good.
People used to pickle vegetables but it has gone out of fashion. If you want some pickles try out Eastern European shops they also tend to do good sliced hams and other meats.
Yes, I was just thinking the same thing this morning... I remember trying to make pickled cucumbers when I was a teenager.
@@MagentaOtterTravels .
You should try pickled walnuts if you can find them. The whole nut is pickled, still with its green cover on, before the shell hardens.
@@grahvis I love walnuts, so I really should give that a try!
In my humble opinion single Gloucester is so much better than double Gloucester but is harder to find.
Yes, I agree that single Gloucester is definitely harder to find! But because I am lucky enough to live in Cheltenham in Gloucestershire, I know just where to find it 😉.
I recently went to the market in Cheltenham and chatted with the woman from Smarts the family run cheese farm where they make both single and double Gloucester. Of course, they are the producers that provide the cheese and the infamous cheese rolling competition 😁🤣... I asked her what she recommended for cheese and pickle and she said double... because she thinks the stronger taste stands up to the pungent taste of the pickle. But it's definitely a personal preference! I honestly think most cheeses taste good with pickle lol!
@@MagentaOtterTravels I didn't take the pickle into consideration I was just observing my preference for single Gloucester.
For pickle... It has to be Red Leicester! 👨🏻🦲👍🏻

Let them try some real vintage Cheddar and put their own pickles on, could be pickled onions or mixed pickles or even brown sauce and then a few pints of bitter to wash it down
Yes a ploughmans is even nicer when you can have more cheese and more pickle 😉
Seems strange that it has all the veggies other than pickles. Would give it a try, but then have one with just cheese!
I think I've found someone even pickier than Keli! haha
Picalilli with cheese would have been good as well, much stronger flavour.
That's good too! I only recently discovered it.
Another weird co-incidence... Spent a while last week finding out that swedes are known as ermm rudebagar (?) in the states, then I hear it here!!!
It's very odd. Rutabaga isn't a word that's used in the UK. We call them turnips in the north and Scotland (from Swedish Turnips). Swedes in the south. Must be because a Japanese company now own the brand.
That is crazy! Yes, rutabaga is a word we know in the US, but not many people actually EAT the things! Americans don't eat many parsnips or turnips either. But honestly, calling a root vegetable a Swede sounds really nutso to an American LOL! It's like you are eating a person from Sweden!
