I’d say this time frame was the beginning of them becoming icons. The most interesting thing about becoming an icon is that no one can set out for themselves or what they do to become iconic. It’s gifted, like a lottery win, bestowed by some great unforeseen circumstances. I don’t doubt DM had their supports to become BIG, but the people have spoken and adored them into icon status. All they had to do is do their work. That should inspire everyone.

The years pass by since this day (32 years already) but at each listening this music gives me chills, it's magic. agreed---at least Vince Clarke had pretty good success with subsequent bands Yaz(oo) Erasure & solo projects; ironically the songs he wrote "Only You" & "Don't Go" were orig for DM but they didnt want them so they became 2 of Alison Moyet's best known(for me next to Situation & Winter Kills
I imagine this must have been a difficult presentation. Look at the face of people watching. They seem to think: these boys are idle bums! Dave barely moves or breathes! The 80's years was so difficult!
I spent my teenage years listening to Depeche Mode on the radio or on records, hardly saw them on TV. I must say I'm happy I did so, as I discover only now how the looks and the dance moves are so not connected with their music and their great atmosphere. It doesn't match at all.
