I'm a big Pokémon fan, but there was a lot in this video that I didn't know about. I think another company that should have been mentioned is Niantic. It can't be understated how much of an impact Pokémon Go is having on the franchise. It's one of their biggest money-makers and has caused them to implement new mechanics in the traditional Pokémon games. Pokémon is a bigger brand now than it was in 90s thanks to Niantic.

Pokemon GO being as popular as it is is kind of a double edged sword however. Because it is one of their main money makers currently, they have been focusing more attention on the mobile market and the main series games have suffered as a result of them splitting their workforce; Sword and Shield being a key example of this.

I was a member of the official pokemon league at toys r us with my brother. We had a hustle where I would find a card we want, make a lowball offer, he would come over, tell me I wasn't allowed to make that deal cause I was getting ripped off and it was a shared collection. I would tell him to piss off, and he would say he's going to get mom cause I can't make bad trades it's not fair. He would then leave and usually the other person would hurry to accept the trade before our mom got involved. In reality my brother had left to find our next victim. We took advantage of the fact that young boys always seem to think young girls don't know what they're doing.

My grandmother taught me the value and how to save money by age 4-5(super early), as she went through the great depression and it was in her blood at that point. I had many different ways of acquiring money, between flipping items in kindergarten+(started K at 4), eating bugs for payment, finding money in payphones/ground(when 99.99% of people used physical money), etc.. Anyways, my parents didn't buy me much past the cheapest clothes and necessities I needed and very little on birthdays/Christmas(which was normally just a small toy and necessities). At this time, the other kids at school were having their parents buy them the new Gameboy Color (as some had the Original Gameboy already but wasn't too popular as kids), and the Pokemon games since they just got released and were popular fast! Everyone was bringing them to school(private school) and was playing them at recess as oppose to actually doing anything, lmao! It got to the point that the teachers had to restrict Gameboy use to only before school starts and after school. My parents, being the "get a job" type of people, said no to everything. So, I bought it myself after a little bit of time. I remember sitting inside the shopping cart at Apex(a now closed company) and picking out the Green Gameboy Color and Pokemon Red Version. Everyone had the Blue Version and I always liked to be different(still to this day), haha. I loved it but would get stuck a lot and my older cousin Jenna would help me. I loved her so much because she was the only family member that liked video games, we grew super close during that time.. until she turned 16 and got a boyfriend and was never home. Anyways, I was an avid yardsaler back in those days too (went out with my grandma and aunt..my family is on the very old side) and I picked up silver, gold and crystal version a little while after release from a house in a very very rich town. I paid $10, $10, $15 for each game respectfully. Those days were so fun. I remember hot summer days and my family was too cheap to have AC, so I'd sit by a window in the kitchen that had a fan and play Pokemon ALL DAY LONG every day. It was so fun. This was until RuneScape in 04 got ported from Classic to RS2 and became the newest thing to play all day. I played Pokemon gen 1-3 countless times and have a pristine collection of every game with working original save batteries still, as well as extras that aren't pristine. I had bought a Gameboy DS just to play the Diamond version on release, hated it because it looked WAY too different and hated the play style, so I sold it all.
I also had a very large Pokemon card collection that I didn't buy a single card of. Again, I was at a private school(Christian), so lots of kids felt kind enough to always give away cards to people. I had an entire binder full of cards! I gave my entire collection away when I graduated 8th grade to my best friend at the time that would flip cards/items on eBay with his dad. I had no idea how to do it. I would just play RuneScape all day, haha. I regret it now obviously as the prices for base set are nuts. I did keep my favorite card from my collection, which was a Charizard holo(which is now worth around $200). I plan to get it graded one day and frame it just as a memory piece, not because it's actually a high grade or anything. It'll probably only grade about 6 PSA.

One of the best moments of my childhood is when i was 5 or 6 and at my grandparents house for christmas and my brother and i each opened a christmas present containing gameboy color with a carrying case and a pokemon game. my bro got pokemon red and i got pokemon blue. he had the green game boy i got the yellow. we stayed up so late playing pokemon and quickly became obsessed. i remember thinking my game boy was acting weird and the batteries were dying because the screen kept flickering, luckily the brother pointed out it was just because one of my pokemon was poisoned. haha. childhood was the best. Dam me too!! I had the see through purple gameboy for Christmas and I think it was pokemon krystal version. So did my uncle. He's 6 months older than me. We had the link cable as well. We didn't know how to use it. We would connect our gamboys together and go the the same place and we thought we would see each other but didn't work 🤣 I would play that game all the time at home. I would even take battery's from remotes from my parents and get whooped lol we lived in the ghetto with little money! I would even go to the store behind our apartments to steal batterys 💀 and have a book of pokemon cards that all the kids in the neighborhood would trade. To this day I never played the cards how they were supposed to be played. We only use to trade them 🤣

The depth and atmosphere of the franchise is what has kept me here for so long. I've made a ton of friends, met a ton of people, and had a much better life overall, mostly thanks to this franchise. I definitely invested a lot of time watching the TV shows, including all of the movies. The first mainline game I ever decided to try was Pokemon Sword and have been hooked on it ever since I got it on November of 2019, currently have over 3K hours with almost every shiny in the game!

Came back in during the end of the ds/beginning of 3ds era and have been there ever since.
Have so many great memories! Pokémon the first movie had people sitting in the isles of the theater because some families came too late and couldn’t finagle seats together. I remember getting a holo charizard in third grade giving up my reverse holo entei. Ended up selling most of my cards during that lull and really regretted it.
Still have all my video game pokes from Pokémon X and Y till sword and shield, and also have some classic ruby and fire red Pokémon transferred up by my cousin way back when.
It’s literally hard to explain, but playing with a character from another game, console generations ago, when you were literally a kid, in a current game with current gen graphics, it’s a goosebump enduring feeling I haven’t felt in other media.

I thought it would get more story based after black, loved it but hated literally all the Pokémon in it.
Felt nostalgia in Y, actually adore oras, and moon was fine. Decent before bed games and I always pick a wack ass team from all different gens *praise be to the pokebank*, but moon didn’t feel like omega ruby, just seemed like something was missing. Felt worse with ultra sun, felt weird about let’s go, and actually liked Shield, but it doesn’t have the replayable nature of other games. Just feels like an incomplete story and the wild area just kinda gives you everything after a while, like fully evolved versions of Pokémon, trade evolutions, etc. which I love, but part of that second run or other version is to do things you didn’t or couldn’t before, at least for me.
Sorry that was long. I would be ok if gamefreak at this point took a multi year break or hire different/multiple devs. The every year/every other year approach gives so little room for innovation, and I was really looking forward to the first console Pokémon game.

I was born in 2002 and it wasn't until I was 4 when I knew what pokemon was and it wasn't until I was 6 where I actually starter playing pokemon. My very first game was pokemon emerald and I never got that many pokemon cards because I thought the video games were a lot more fun than the trading card game. After my third game, pokemon pearl, I started to move on to other video games such as mario, sonic, minecraft, and others but it wasn't until 2014 when I got back into pokemon when I saw everything that had changed in the franchise since the early 2000's. The first game I decided to try out after a long while was pokemon Heart Gold, then I went and played through every other generation I missed out on. And TO THIS DAY I still play these games. I think that the perspective that someone has on Pokemon largely depends on how old they are and which Nintendo handheld system that they first had. Since the DS Lite was my first system, my favorite Pokemon games are those on the DS and GBA, with the Gameboy ones being a bit too old and the 3DS and Switch ones, while having brought lots of new things to the franchise, are not nostalgic for me as Generations 3, 4 and 5 are. People who were only introduced to the franchise via the card game or Pokemon Go would probably also have a different perspective on the franchise.

I have caught the very first wave.
When I was in 3rd grade a friend told me about this Pokémon show that would play right after school, I had to run home to catch it in time! Later that year the games came out and I got blue for Christmas. Cards came later and I had to have it ALL! But I got older and lost interest after Crystal version.

Pokemon was kinda happening here when I was a kid, like we had the games and TV shows and the cards, but I remember a family friend used to visit the US regularly and he would bring home so much fun merch that we never had a chance to buy where we lived, T-Shirts and candy and umbrellas. Happy times.

I loved pokemon when it first came out and fell out of love like everyone else. I fell back in love when pokemon go came out. I was a new mom and it gave an intention to getting out of the house. Today, my son and I are both engrossed in a love with pokemon. We play PoGo together, Sword/Shield, collect cards, and have watched every season of the series.

I remember the first time I saw anything related to Pokemon. It had to have been in 1998. I was working a lot of overtime and got home around 5 or 6 one morning and was having something to eat before going to bed. The Pokemon opening came on and being a graphic artist, it kind of grabbed my attention (I also grew up as a big Speed Racer fan). My wife woke up around that time and I told her this sounded like a genius marketing property. And oh yea, I'm a graphic artist for a marketing agency.
Our kids were 5 years old, 1 year old and another yet to be born. They grew up loving everything about Pokemon. They always wanted the swag and games for Christmas.
Now, flash forward to today. I am absolutely hooked on Pokemon Go and our now-grown kids get Pokemon swag for me at Christmas.

When I was about twelve, I was given a black labrador puppy (without my mom's approval) by a family friend. I initially named her Shadow but Umbreon was one of my favorite pokemon so I began to call her that. The first day I had her, I took her for a walk but I didn't have a leash. Our street rose up to a hill before reaching another road. As I got to the end of the street, I realized my pup wasn't next to me anymore. I turned around and saw her standing frozen, eyes locked on something in someone's yard.
It was a tethered chihuahua, half the size of my lab puppy.
I took *one step* toward my dog and she flipped around and hightailed it back home, absolutely yelping at the top of her lungs like she'd been abused! I went flying down the hill after her, yelling "Come back, Umbreon! Come back!" I was rather impressed that in less than 24 hours, she knew where home was as she crashed right into the front door, begging to be let in. We got in and I just died laughing on the couch :) So much for our first walk! I would later have to carry her past the big, bad, chihuahua whenever we got to that part of the street, lol.
