Madonna has never surpassed her 1980's heyday. In the 1980's she had hit after hit after hit. Her music she has released since then is nowhere near as good as her 1980's music.
Early in her career she did a appearance on American Bandstand and in a interview with Dick Clark said she wanted to rule the world and she sure did.
Per Songfacts "La Isla Bonita" means "The Beautiful Island" in Spanish. In the song, Madonna sings about the beautiful island of San Pedro, where she longs to be. San Pedro is not a real island. In a 2009 interview with Rolling Stone, Madonna said, "I don't know where that came from. I don't know where San Pedro is. At that point, I wasn't a person who went on holidays to beautiful islands. I may have been on the way to the studio and seen an exit ramp for San Pedro."
This song provided yet another look and sound for Madonna, as it had a Spanish theme. In an interview with the New York Times, she called the song, "A tribute to the beauty and mystery of Latin American people."

Yes, it does have a salsa vibe and you can dance salsa to it. Yes, it has an island vibe and a Spanish vibe at the same time. Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Dominican Republic, are all islands and Spanish-speaking countries, so you get the best of both worlds. Great song and great vibe

Madonna never said for sure but it's believed that La Isla Bonita is San Pedro in Belize, east of Mexico.
In the beginning of the 90’s, This song was very popular. I still got the single.
And when I was out dancing at a salsoteca that had the name ” La Isla ” ( don’t know if it was named after This song ), but every night by closing time ,they would finish with the intro of this song,with the strumming guitarrs.
I was a kid in the 90s and a big Madonna fan. The radio still played some of her 80s hits and I tried to record them all- but somehow I never heard this one until a few years ago. It was a pleasant surprise! Such a beautiful song. BTW a couple years after she did this she did get to go to San Pedro (in the south part of LA on the ocean) - that's where she filmed her Like a Prayer music video.

My mom couldnt stand Madonna,i guess she found her too much (especially the vulgar,triple x provocative style she had). But then she noticed this song,and her mind changed completely. La Isla Bonita and Papa Dont Preach became 2 of her favourite songs of alltime. She even ended up buying Madonnas greatest hits on VHS to me,wich really showed how much she changed her mind around. When my mom had her mind set on something,it was close to impossible to change her mind. Earlier she tried to "shield me" from certain Madonna videos and such,so for her to buy me that collection says ALOT. I cant really watch it anymore but i still have it,it means so much to me still to this day,i still have it somewhere. And besides,its a dear memory i have left from her. Cancer took her way too early from me and this earth. That also speaks volume on Madonnas behalf,she was able to open moms eyes and mind,and turn her over. Now granted she was still not very positive towards Madonnas "provocative nature",but i guess it was too much to make her see it from Madonnas side. Madonna had a plan with everything (she still has)
