    If you want to use A LOT of water, try the cotton rag papers. They can be pretty expensive, but then again, so are artist grade watercolor sets. :p

    This is BY FAR the best review on mix media paper I have seen on youtube. I watched several useless videos but now I know which pad to get. Thank you!

    Ah you used the Canson XL mix media sketchbook book instead of their Canson Artist series mix Media paper (which both papers are too different from eachother). Canson XL Mix Media paper is more for light covers of wet medias, great with dry mix and is great for ink drawing if you use anything that isn't acholol based. Meanwhile Canson Artist series is great for Marker art(even tho it will show on the paper other side), dry media art, ink art is good with this and seem to can't take wet medias if their too wet of a media such as watercolors (the media I mainly use). Both Canson papers are useable with the both front and back of the paper when you use the sketchbook for paint, ink, pencil on one side.
    For me I prefer Canson XL mix media paper for my watercolor pieces on the go, pencil sketches, and ink drawings, while Canson art series for Marker art, pencil art and light ink drawings only.
    Meanwhile strathmore also has alot of different kinda of mix media paper, which I say their highest quality of mix media paper rn is the 400 series mix media paper. But if you wanna try a good mix media paper as a I don't care as much/testing out ideas/drafting ideas/trying out new medias/Ect Strathmore mix Media paper, I highly recommend the Strathmore Vision Mix Media paper (not Strathmore Visual mix media journal) since it can take ink, pencil, wet media and a bit of alcohol markers since this paper is more towards label for calligraphy art which is why you'll get more paper for your buck.

      You just saved my life I am planning to my touch markers which are alcohol based
      I see other CZcamsr use canson mix media and it just works well so I am super confused
      I don’t want to buy the mix media paper and then not use them because my parents won’t buy another sketchbook

      The Strathmore 500 moxed media paper is fantastic and 100% cotton (tho only 90 lb) and if you get the visual journal you can get one for less than 10$ on Amazon. It really cannot be beat in terms of bang for buck. I can't stand the 400 series tho tbh

    I use sharpies pretty often and with Canson Mixed Media it doesn't bleed through and Strathmore does. No idea why, but it's something I've noticed.

    there are 2 types of watercolor paper one is hot pressed watercolor paper that has almost no tooth & a smooth surface
    and the other is cold pressed watercolor paper has a slightly textured surface tho some cold pressed watercolor paper has more textured/tooth then others
    so maybe ot pressed watercolor paper would work for you maybe
    oh and the canson mixed media paper can take a lot of water even tho it doesn't seen like it I have done watercolor paintings on it before

      It can take a good amount of water but it warps horribly, begins to absorb the water so the page is damp but not wet, and whether because of the warping or the paper itself the pigment of watercolors drys splotchy. It is ok if you are doing more “dry” work or (strangely) ink washes. Just my experience, I’m happy for all the people who love this paper but I am sticking to Masters Touch mixed media as my cheap sketchbook.

    The stathmore mixed media is 140 lbs. and the canson is 98 lbs. Of course the strathmore will buckle less. I use both, stathmore is a better quality paper. You do get more layers of colored pencil with canson before it's burnished because of it's tooth.

    • @janascallan87
      @janascallan87 Před 4 lety +2

      Juan G! That’s what I was thinking. You can’t really compare the 2 as far as mixed media paper, with one being 98lb and the other, 140lb. That’s a pretty big difference. However, I do agree that Strathmore is a better quality paper.

    I always buy canson paper, cause it's always available where I go... even in hobby lobby since I recognize the paper I tend to always grab it
    Now I should probably look into the other types of paper now that I get into comics and mess with water color pens

    • @JaceyChase
      @JaceyChase  Před 5 lety +2

      Yeah, it's good paper! And it's super affordable considering you get so many sheets of it for the price. It's honestly good paper. I just felt more comfortable using the Strathmore for the amount of warping I got with the watercolor.

      Actually Canson XL Mix media paper is way least expensive vs their Canson Artist series mix media paper, but I prefer the XL mix media paper in a size 5.5 x 8.5 Inches(which cost about at most ~$6 since its the smallest sketchbook which I prefer especially when I am on the go) due to the paper taking more of a watercolor beating vs their other mix media paper.

      I am a beginner just learning to draw and colour so I found and Canson Mixed Media artist sketchbook works the best for me.i use watercolour, layering , WoW etc on on side and pencils and pens etc on the back. I love spiral bound because i always fold my books and make also make small rectangles on each page to draw/paint - so I maximize the space on each page. It’s not the best paper for watercolour though but I am learning.

    It might be worth trying the Strathmore mixed media visual journal if you haven't already. It's cheaper than their 400 series mixed media paper, and you get more sheets. Also, it's actually 100% cotton and 90 pounds, and has a vellum texture that has a little less tooth than canson mixed media paper. I'm pretty sure the 400 series mixed media you used isn't cotton, so I'd be curious to see the two compared, since cotton paper usually performs better than wood pulp paper.
    You can get 34 sheets of 9"×12" for a little over $15 when it's not on sale (you can always find it on sale, though).
    You might want to double check to make sure it's still made with cotton, though, because it's been a while since I last bought one (I stopped doing art for a few years and recently got back into it, and I had an unused mixed media journal that I hadn't started using yet, so I haven't had to buy one in a while).
    Edit: I just looked it up and Strathmore's website says it's still 100% cotton, so yay!

    • @NelaDunato
      @NelaDunato Před rokem +1

      It may be 100% cotton, but it weights only 190gsm so it warps like hell! I regret buying it because I can't use heavy watercolor washes on it. And the cotton texture feels quite gritty, while the 400 series feels smoother. Different strokes for different folks I guess, but I'd take 400 series mixed media over 500 series mixed media any day.

    Please,I've just watched a video here on CZcams, which shows that this paper has a linear texture on it, which looks and works really awfull and makes the paper, useless for pencil drawing. That just stoped me from ordering this paper for the 1st time, as it was suggested to me, for coloured pencil use. He had the A4 version with the spiral on the top side. Did anyone else had the same experience with this paper? Thanks in advance
