Older people will probably remember a time before Georgian Way and the M6 when the city centre was choked with traffic going to Scotland and down to Kendal. This was the first attempt to get the traffic out of the city centre, then English St being closed to vehicles. I drive, but when visiting Carlisle, tend to go on the train if i want a drink or park on Victoria Viaducr.

I remember when Carlisle had one set of traffic lights English St/Viaduct/Burtons' Corner and the old lanes. Globe Lane had a joke shop and a chip shop that you could smell from Lowther St

@@brianw4983 I was taken to Binns cafe for tea for mother and cocoa for me. Waitresses had starched white uniforms and remember the vacuum tube/overhead wire for handling cash?

In my opinion, the council killed the town when they made it pedestrians only. Every saturday we`d go round town hall up to the board and back round, always very busy. I use to catch the bus at the `laundry` under the town hall late 70s / 80s. It`s got no sole now.

Absolutely. The council seem determined to destroy our historic city.
I cannot walk far and rely on taxis to get me to where I need to be. PedestrianisatIon means I can no longer access many places in the city centre.

What happened to the underground toilets? Were they just blocked up or filled in?
