The whole diet thing is a little subjective. I realize Jamieleigh like Tops and the seasonal feeding system but a lot of vets and behaviorists swear by Harrisons and a few like Roudybush.

I got my first bird, a parrotlet, after seeing an ad in the paper saying he had to picked up NOW! I contacted the seller and found out the bird had been abused and the breeder had repossessed it. Before leaving, I contacted the local rescue to find out about food and cages and avian vets. He came with a cage, so I didn’t have to get that. I bought Roudybush tiny pellets at the bird store and brought him home. I started watching CZcams videos and I opened his cage door but he never came out. But I read to him and talked to him and tried interacting through the bars. It took a while but eventually he came out. He really liked one of my cavaliers, and would go to him and hide under one of his ears. I had him for almost 2 years when the abuse he had suffered reared its head and he started convulsing frequently. And during one convulsion, his heart stopped. I learned a lot from him. But because of him, almost all my birds came from bad situations. My first moustache and Quaker were housed in an unheated room. Someone had said she would take them, but I watched that ad for a month. It was New Year’s Eve and -40C and I called the owner and asked about the birds. She was still waiting for the other caller to come. I told her if she didn’t let me have them, I would be calling the police and animal control. She said ok. I had to drive almost 2 hours to get to her house. I left my car running to keep it warm. Her boyfriend put the cage in the car and I had brought travel cages and blankets to keep them warm. It was almost 2am by the time I got home and got them unloaded. They are now part of my 8 bird flock.

The little birds definitely aren't short on personality, too! My three budgie boys are all very different, and I adore them for it. Ekko is chaos and I'm working on him waiting while I train one of the other two. Nyx is scared of EVERYTHING new, but he takes to desensitisation training really well! And Kite is just SO laid back and cuddly, so I work with him a lot more on recall flights and encouraging him to work with the foraging toys more.
Ekko is also the only one who'll bathe in the fountain I have! Nyx enjoys a spray bottle, while Kite prefers being on the bird perch I have near the shower- he likes the steam!

I have 2 shelter lovebirds that fortunately bonded together although i got them 1 year apart and they were 4 y.o.
I find they aren't afraid of my cats enough: they try to land on their heads. Hopefully, the cats escape now as they were bitten out of the blue.
Only few opportunities to bring the birds out, here in Québec, but whenever it's warm enough during the summer, i bring the cage with me, to sit in the garden.
(Can't leave the cage without supervision due to squirrels and neighbors' cats!)
Otherwise, i've improved their diet and cage set up, thanks to this channel!
Both birds seem to only like spinaches for now, among fresh vegetables.
I have recently joined FB groups about lovebirds... HORRIFYING and UNBELIEVABLE to discover everyone is breeding them, people who don't even know the basics, while some others are asking for a FIRST bird, such as a Grey or Amazon... Some are looking for free birds to probably resell...💔🥺

LOVE YOUR CHANNEL I have been subscribed for nearly 4 years i think my conure is now 3years old and my two budgies are 1 year budgies and I completely agree small parrots tend to not be looked after as well as bigger parrots because they are small and "cheap" they are a native to Australia and has just as complex lives as other parrots and I HATE people saying its a "starter bird" thank you for bringing light to this issue and helpinp parrots and parrot owners KEEP IT UP

I really liked that video. However I think you should add another point to it. #11 would be to NOT IGNORE their body language! I know small(er) parrots are cute, especially when they are angry and hissing at you with their tiny beak but that does not mean, that you can still just grab them and cuddle, when they DON'T want to! That is just a negative experience for them that will not bring them closer to you!

Great video! You probably covered this in your point about other pets, but an extra reminder about supervising your small bird around any larger birds you may have is important. Tiny toes and beaks can be bitten off in less than a minute by a conure and larger parrot.

I'd also like to hear what Jamie has to say about this. I put my parrotlet in a sunny window on a suction cup perch for short periods. Not sure that's enough, but she enjoys it. I bought an LED light designed for parrots that mounts on top of the cage. She seems to chill out when under it. But I'm not sure if it provides all the benefits of UV. Someone pointed out that all day direct UV can be bad for their eyes, which makes sense. Any thoughts?

For diet it also depends on what the bird doesn’t like or isn’t used to. Also some birds in the wild and mainly eat seeds and it’s said that that’s okay as long as veggies are an option.

Seed should always be included in budgie diets. They do eat seed as a part of their diet. It should be a small amount in addition to their regular diet. My rescue budgies all get a pinch of seed mixed in with the natural feeding system and pellets.

Hi, new to this cannel. My lovebird always humps towels, blankets, or even the couch at times. I feel like it messes with his tail feathers although they rarely to ever fall out. Is there a way to mitigate this behavior ? Even with this he gets to be out often

    • @joebean3615
      @joebean3615 Před 8 měsíci

      What’s his diet and sleep
Also only ever pat birds on the head (BirdTricks have made a video called ‘how to make pet parrots cuddly and affectionate’ ) which talks more about that
Cage covers will make them hormonal any dark little enclosures (including snuggle huts (AKA happy huts)
And bells and mirrors take them out immediately no doubt (as well as happy huts if you have any birds don’t need beds in the wild they sleep on tree branches)
Birds can regurgitate or the in side of the bell (I can’t remember what it’s called)
You may say or think ‘oh my bird loves his/her mirror’ no, they think that that’s another bird (and they’re mate) and most likely will get aggressive and territorial over the mirror and won’t get exercise because s/he will spend most of the day there
Bells, mirrors, snuggle huts, cage covers, bad diet and patting him/her all over do nothing good for your bird please don’t do any of these thing listed it’s ok if you currently do you can still change them
Sorry for the wall I hope your lovebird don’t stay hormonal for much longer
(Forgot to mention if it’s spring that’s the season they naturally mate so it’s normal to get some hormonal responses every now and then but it shouldn’t be that extreme if diet sleep ect are right)

@@joebean3615 I appreciate all the info!
His sleep schedule is from 8pm to 8am
His diet is mostly pellets with one hung millet a day and some dark leafy greens for him. An occasional hand feeding of seeds
I’ll take the bells out since I’m hearing a lot of horror stories, lucky not lived any myself
No snuggle huts or mirrors but he does have a stuffed toy, his size, he gives “throw up” to but he also gives it to me and isn’t protective over the toy or me going near it

just a reminder that almost any pellet is better than an all-seed diet, even if it's not the absolute best diet. Pellets are a complete food (even if processed blah-blah-blah), so, all that's really important is making sure the fat content is on the low side (... I have seen pellets with over 20% fat!!!).
so, if you're a lazy f*ck that just refuses to cook for your bird, PLEASE, at the very least get said bird on a pellet diet.
also, if pellets come with vitamin D3 (... like most do, since they are fortified), sunlight is a QoL thing, yes, but it's not mandatory to prevent vit D and thus calcium deficiency.
