  • @Zenbuck2
    @Zenbuck2 Před 2 lety +68

    I'm actually fascinated by these kinds of "hippy" psychotic-break cases simply because of a personal experience of my own. I've seen many examples of psychedelic drugs being used to manipulate others psychologically, i.e. the Manson family etc, or also seeming to lead to disordered and paranoid mental states (as in this and other cases), or having the potential to induce schizophrenia/psychosis in vulnerable individuals. However, strangely enough, it was one psychedelic experience that led me to leave intoxicants behind altogether, and embark on a more successful, meaningful, and fulfilling existence.
    One side of my family line had suffered generationally from alcoholism and neuroticism, and I inherited those genes/behaviors. When I was 22, I was at the lowest point of my life. I had been drinking almost a 5th of whiskey every day, since I was 17, and I started drinking at age 14, and I couldn't keep a job for more than a few months, not even as a janitor. Now, I'm not a "hippy" but one night at a mountainside party I took two Psilocybin mushrooms someone offered me. I would not normally just take a drug someone offered me, the only other intoxicant besides caffeine and alcohol that I had used were a few occasions when I tried cannabis. So taking these willy nilly was reckless in retrospect, even if it was one of my friends who offered them to me, but, I was very very drunk at that point, and feeling kind of "devil may care" due to my psychological state.
    However, I ended up having an intense, introspective, very unsettling experience, where I could literally physically FEEL throughout my body the damage that I was doing to my internal organs, how damaged they already were. I realized how ill I was mentally, and physically. I couldn't hide from the fact that I was addicted to alcohol. The truth stared me in the face, and I could see how far my trajectory had taken me to a place of emptiness, chaos, and sickness. I could see all the failures in my life that were precipitated by my addiction. It was terrifying to realize what the future would hold if I didn't change. No more mental compartmentalizing was possible.
    The next day, I did not drink. And the next day. And the next. It's been 34 years since I've used any intoxicant and it changed the course of my life. Now, I can't say that this is a route people should take, at all. I'm the least New Age person imaginable. I am an believer in old school, rationalist, Enlightenment thinking, but this was a profound, life changing experience for me. I don't want to engage in magical thinking about this, because I distrust that kind of illogic. But something happened to me that night, that changed the course of my existence here. I went on to work long hours as a cook to go to university part time, and eventually earned a masters degree, worked for about 10 years in that particular industry, and then eventually left that field to play music full time, and to teach music as well.
    I wonder whether these people in this video or others covered, would have behaved this way or presented mental illness symptoms and committed these egregious acts regardless of their using these substances, or whether these drugs actually pushed them over the edge? It's very possible that they may have. But one thing that does seem consistent is that even drugs that are known to primarily lead to positive outcomes, i.e. ones that are prescribed by a psychiatrist, that have been researched, can sometimes have unintended psychological effects, and of course, we are still learning new things as time goes on. I'm curious what Dr. Grande's take would be on such examples such as my own.
    Anyway. Love the channel, and thanks to you Dr. Grande for your amazing dry burns, and thoughtful analyses!

    Living in Mendocino County, Northern California ive lived near many people who would be termed "hippies" i hate to paint a subculture with a broad brush, but so many of my countercultural neighbors were so much into drugs and magical "thinking" that trying to communicate with them with a rationality based approuch was a losing proposition,one of the biggest issues with them was "benign neglect" involving pets and children bordering on abuse of not only their personal charges, but the effect this neglectfull behavior had on other people/neighbors was a factual issue that was never realistically faced or even admitted ,i used to want to be "a free soul" but learned at an early age the harmfullness of this scatter brained approuch to living...

    Thank you, Dr. Grande. I especially like the point you made about the others around them not recognizing signs of mental illness.
    From what I've seen, the "counterculture" and "New Age" (and also some in the LGBT community), are often so invested in non-judgment that they fail to call a spade a spade, (and even forbid others from doing so). They have even gotten to the point of changing our language, where definitions of words have drifted.
    Here's a minor example: I worked in a New Age bookstore. The owner was concerned about "shrinkage." In other words, some items had gone missing; were stolen; were shoplifted.
    We had an incident where a woman had been trying on jewelry. She tried on several rings, but didn't buy any. After she left, I was putting them away, and noticed that one was missing. We looked all over for it, but it was gone. I remarked to a coworker that I thought the woman had stolen it. She looked some more and then confirmed, "She took it." Rarely in the New Age community do you hear that anything was "stolen." It has always been "taken."
    A more serious example shows up in the LGBT community. Pedophiles and NAMBLA have attempted to align themselves with the non-judgmental LGBT community for many decades, but the LGBT community has always balked. Now the pedophiles have relabeled themselves as MAPs, claimed that they would never harm a child, (I notice they don't say that they would never TOUCH a child), and some of the people in the community seem to be falling for it.
    People who are into non-judgment really do need to learn the value of discernment. As one of my teachers told us repeatedly, "Just because you're spiritual doesn't mean that you have to be stupid!" JP Sears does a fantastic job of pointing this out - with humor!

      Just wrong. They were psychopaths who probably would have killed without drug use.
      Acid is more likely to make someone less prone to violence, not more. I'm not advocating it's use; if you're prone to fear then it's not for you. But as Dr Grande has explained previously, LSD is not linked to an increased level of violence or even mental illness. When murderers happen to have used LSD, it's incidental, not causal, although the media laps that shit up so we hear about every case.
      The drug most linked to violence is alcohol.
