You want to know the why? Simply because Filipino kids are exposed to hearing hard-ass songs -- not just nursery rhymes but I'm talking about Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, 80's and 90's rock and ballads and all sort of genre. They have no choice because it's the adults who tune in to the radio or plays the cassette/CD and let the music fill up the entire house from morning till dusk. And when these kids hear these songs that adults play, the kids don't just try to sing it but also try to emulate it --- also explains why even Filipino boys don't sing songs only from their male idols but also sing female songs because why not if they can. And seeing that their adult families often sing as well, they learn that to sing out loud is as normal as eating a snack. Plus, the Karaoke helps too.
    So in a nutshell:
    1) Exposure to hard and complicated songs.
    2) Exposure to all kinds of genre and not just pop.
    3) Emulate the original singers.

Kids learn to sing by emulation. And singing permeates our culture so they pick it up without too much thought. Singing is a means to get out of poverty especially if you make it in the industry so there is that motivation for parents too to encourage their kids to sing well and constantly.

This girl was dubbed as Lea's Mini-me. Hope you can check out her performance/ duet with Lea doing Matilda medley. Lea's sending her till this day to a prestigious school where she herself graduated high school. She loves this kid so much that when the producers of Les Miserables went to the Philippines and brought the Australian cast, Lea recommended esang so she was given the chance to audition. They already have a complete cast but it's Lea so they let Esang sing for them and got a Little Cossette part both in Manila and Singapore production. Lea even ask her to go the house prior to the audition to tell her what's the producers will look for and ask her to sing so she can observe and give advises.

Many children in the Philippines are as good as Esang, because they are exposed to music even before they are born. Soon-to-be-moms would listen to music every chance they get. And when they're finally out music is everywhere, at home, public transpo, cars, restaurants and even malls. Family members would listen to music if not even sing whenever possible. Maybe, that's why we have such great talents here. ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you so much for appreciating Pinoy Talents, love watching you guys so much.

I have to agree that esang's talent is a rare god given gift. Sure many filipino children aren't really vocally trained and either it is genetic or exposure to music that brings out the singing talent, still, not everyone sings at the caliber like esang does. She doesn't just mimic another artist's singing style, she already has her own style and own interpretation, and that amount of control and musicality is astounding considering her age.

Another layer of why this particular performance is celebrated. This song won the grand prize in the 1984 MetroPop Music Festival because (IMO), it encapsulates the resilience of the Filipino and how music contributes to this (hence, the song thanks Music for being there. "Salamat" is "thank you" in Filipino) At this age, she understands the message of the song and tells that story very well.

In our family and neighborhood, listening to music and karaoke is done for fun and enjoyment. To my surprise my daughter started to sing too and emulate the singing of the artists. She sings well now.
With your question, should we expose our children to music? Here in the Philippines every family gathering, school programs or party and events children are given a chance to showcase their talents in singing and dancing. Most if not all, children here has their favorite song to sing or dance to perform. Should they be called to perform, they have something to share. They are not forced but that's how they enjoyed it here.

It’s so easy here in the Philippines because even if your family isn’t into music, there surely are neighbors and classmates and friends who are. We idolize our singers and singing competitions and karaoke are everywhere and it’s a natural part of family conversation to talk about why this singer or that singer is great, or who should win a competition etc.

I agree. When kids are surrounded by music and people singing and playing instruments, your kids will end up learning the music or song naturally. The first 5 years of kids's brain is like a sponge. They can keep absorbing anything that they can and remember it and apply it.

Filipino kids are really very good in singing, especially those who joined the Tawag ng Tanghalan (TNT) singing contest like her and the TNT Boys, whom you also reacted to already. They were also contestants to the show ‘Your Face Sounds Familiar’ where they impersonated different artists. They had only 1 week to prepare for each performance. And because they were kids, they have to incorporate their rehearsals to their busy school schedule too. I would suggest that you watch all their performances in that show to see how really talented these kids are.

Yehey Esang, the little prodigy of Ms. Lea Salonga. She joined the first batch of The Voice Philippines with Darren Espanto. She was part of the top4. She was very young here, this is the same time during The Voice. If I am not mistaken she was 6yrs old here I think. She is the one of the youngest contestant then.

It's not actually rare in the Philippines forr kids to have "adult" voices and have this presence when performing because music is ingrained in us. they see it on TV and on the internet so they are able to do it through EMULATION. KATRINA VELARDE started young and she already had a big voice and a demeanor of an adult when performing.
I think with Esang, she was nurtured at home because she has a musical family that loves musicals and theaters. I could be wrong but that's what i remember.
She's now a young lady who's come so far as a theatre actress. She played MATILDA when she was younger but she's already done a lot of musicals.

❤ Most of these Filipino kids who sing, can sing, are able to sing, or prefer to sing in a or this "mature-like" or more "mature-like" or "mature-sounding" o more "mature-sounding" voice, if they grew up and they're still growing up and being surrounded most of the time by older, classic or more classic, and traditional or more traditional music, songs, genres and subgenres, music styles, and music or musical preferences, likings, favorites, and/or influences of and from their parents, aunts and/or uncles, godparents, grandparents, or great grandparents, which they listen to, get more used to, and/or try to mimic, imitate, and/or emulate at or from a very young or younger age, and while they're still growing up into adolesence or teenage years and before, during, and sometimes after to even way more after they hit their puberty.
Most of these Filipino kids don't have a formal and generally traditional European or generally traditional Western music education and vocal education, training, guidance, and/or coaching, and the music and songs which they grow up listening and being surrounded with for most of the time, and which they've also been trying to or straight up mimicking, imitating, and/or emulating, plus or as well as the mostly, majority, or predominantly informal and "traditional, regional, local, or clan/family-specific" or more "traditional, regional, local, or clan/family-specific" Filipino styles, manners, methods, procedures, systems, traditions, customs, or ways of music education and vocal education, training, guidance, and/or coaching from their parents, grandparents, great grandparents, aunts and/or uncles, godparents, older cousins, older siblings, older neighbors and/or other older community members in or from their local schools, churches or parishes and/or chapels, or local singing contest or competitions, developed throughout years, decades, to even centuries of history and internal or domestic and external or international socio-cultural influences are most and/or the only music education and vocal education, training, guidance, and/or coaching they have or had, can have, could have, or are/were able to have as their most available, most free, and most affordable or cheapest/most inexpensive options compared or in comparison or contrast to or with a or the formal and generally traditional European or generally traditional Western music education and vocal education, training, guidance, and/or coaching.
These are also mostly backed up, supported, supplemented, developed, cultivated, and/or enriched by the subculture of the almost constant presence, liking, fondness, enjoyment, fun, entertainment, happiness/joy/ merriment, favoring, and/or preference of singing with, through, or via a karaoke or videoke machine, among others or the like; live singing and/or performance or entertainment for other members of the family or extended family, neighbors, or other community members in various or varied music or musical, music-related or musical-related, and socio-cultural settings, events, occasions, happenings, or situations; participating and joining, as well as even excelling, developing, and improving in, while in, or while being in as a part, participant, or member of a local choir, small glee or vocal/voice club, or other chorale or vocal/voice group in the local community, schools, or churches or parishes and/or chapels, among other places; being part or a member of their own clan or family's vocal/voice group like a choir or other chorale or vocal/voice groups, a singing or vocal band or a music or musical band with a live singer or vocalist, or an a capella group, among other groups; and the socio-cultural and general support, liking, favoring, norm or normativity or normalization, and/or general preference for musical talents, musical or musical-rhythmic intelligence, aptitudes or inclinations to music, and of trying to hone, mold, train, support, develop, cultivate, and/or enrich any of these mentioned and the kids themselves at or from a very young or younger age by and from most of us who are members or natives, citizens, and nationals of the general Filipino population and society ourselves among ourselves and each other or one another, towards our Filipino youth and/or younger generations, and to the next generations of Filipinos to come, and even towards non-Filipinos.
