"Everyone will tell you its a chick flick. But only because if you ground it up and fed it to battery hens it would be better than running it though a projector" Classic.
4:25 - "Pfft, sorry, leaving. Nope. Kate Hudson's not a high-powered lawyer. Not having that!" LMAO! Mark's delivery and body language during that is absolutely hilarious!
The really depressing thing is not that these sort of movies exist, but the sheer volume of them and how many inert drones actually still go to see them. Another fine review Mark
Hathaway's performance in 'Rachel getting married' was excellent. And despite the 'wedding' reference in the title - it's not really a film about a wedding. It's the furthest thing from 'Bride Wars' as you can get. It's about the effects of drug addiction and the death of a small child. The scene in which Hathaway smacks Debra Winger is one of my favourite movie scenes of all time. The 'boho' posturings of the fictional family concerned were very irritating - no argument - almost ruined the film. But that film did convince me that Anne Hathaway is a very, very good actress.
I might a cold emotionless man, but what's wrong with moving their wedding date? Is it really the end of the world if one of them pushed it back by a month? I just don't get this premise, why make a film about it?
I am embarrased to admit I have watched this clip about fifteen times in total, but it has everything Kermode. Impressions, a deserved but spirited rant, comments by Mayo, and a reality check for the cancer that is Kate Hudson.
This review made me want to subscribe to this channel, I really don't know what Anne Hathaway was thinking but she better be careful before she ends up typecast with all these wedding movies she's done.
Wonder how much of these classic rants are scripted, or thought out beforehand or just top of the head stream of consciousness. If the later, Kermode needs to be given far props, not just as a film connoisseur and educator, but as a genuinely smart funny guy.
+Andy Kerr i think he takes some notes beforehand, or at least does think about it, as no one wants to have a blank silence of oh what was that film again live on air! But yeah I wonder that too, because he's said he doesnt particularly like getting angry about the films. But he knows its entertaining
I get your point, but the thing is Mark Kermode is one of those critics who actually isnt looking for oscar films- he is looking for films that do just entertain (hence his own little awards show he does) He understands genre, and isn't snobby about films that others may look down on- (liking Basic Instinct 2, High school Musical, Twilight, because they were right for their target audience, and fit the genre) He just wants it to be good- and if it is a comedy, fit its genre- i.e be funny.
it would be interesting for someone to compare how differently mark reviews the worst of female-targeted cinema versus the worst of male-targeted cinema. i know he's really ripped into like, michael bay, so i'm not accusing him of any bias, i just bet someone has and i'd be curious to see such an analysis.
I’ve watched a ton of Mark’s reviews and i don’t think he has a sexist bias. He’s made much of the acting shortcomings of Keanu Reeves and Nicholas Cage in particular, but also Sam Worthington, Shia LeBoeuf etc.-his recap of Eddie Redmayne in Jupiter Ascending is very funny, for one. I can’t think of any female directors or producers who have inspired classic Kermodean rants like Michael Bay, M Shyamalan, McG, or Zack Snyder, but there are comparatively few working.
Very funny review, just one question - can anyone tell me what the kit kat thing's about? I know it's some sort of running joke between them, about a supposed boycott of Nestle (or just Kitkat?) for some reason, but can anyone tell me what the originial idea behind it was?
He never hams up, he's always been that mad when he's seen a rubbish movie. I remember hearing him on Mayo's Radio 1 show about 10 years ago, before he became more widely known, and he was required listening even then. His review of Robin Williams's "Bicenntennial Man" was a corker.... "There is something deeply disturbing about watching a metal plate slowly mutate into the smugly grinning features of Robin Williams (baby voice) as he watches little children playing on the beach. And as his
I remember being dragged to see this in high school. It was the first bad film I've ever seen that I didn't even try to apologize for out of sheer embarassment afterwards. It was utterly vile and deserving of untramelled scorn. The worst film I have ever, ever seen.
@godbotherer1909 "he bangs on about how great Cannibal Holocaust when it shows real animals killed for entertainment." If you've ever even listened to Kermode before you'll know how he is vehemently against actual cruelty to animals and children in films.
@leapoffaith20 Yeah i think it's just Meg Ryan as a helicopter Pilot, tbh Sigourney Weaver could be a pilot or Cate Blanchet. Kermode just knows miscasting when he sees it.
Mark, I noticed that some people love SILENT RUNNING and Some people Hate it! I see 3 reviews that are 5 stars followed by 3 reviews that are one star. Why is there such a wide range of opinions on this movie, please explain! Help!
eyebrows slowly go up and down in little demonstrations (switches to normal angry voice) I mean it was ABSOLUTELY...HORRENDOUS! (Shouting) I thought I want to go and punch someone after watching this. It's 2 hours long, it makes "7 Years in Tibet" feel like a short film. I mean.....words fail me!" An unforgettable review and I so wish they'd had live stream for it back then. The "Marley and Me" review comes close to it, in terms of style of rant.
Not to "one up" but I had a worse start to 2009 a few weeks later, unless the film is worse than the death of a parent and then I'll be glad I've avoided it (because it looked so horrible)
"Everyone will tell you its a chick flick. But only because if you ground it up and fed it to battery hens it would be better than running it though a projector" Classic.
This is still one of the best rants in the show's history. It just has so many good moments condensed into nine minutes.
One of my favourite Kermodean rants. The puckering up, the faces, the clingfilm bits are the best parts.
"Did you deliberately chose the worst clip in the movie?"-Simon Mayo, nope that was the clip the producers are trying to SELL the movie on.
The utter despair as he spits out, "Simon, you don't have to see them!"
"BECAUSE I'M A LAWYER, BUT I'M NOT FAT, I'M THIN, BUT I'M PRETENDING TO BE FAT, TAKE THAT!"-6:27
Priceless.
"Anne Hathaway, who's all teeth and eyebrows" LMAO!
I love how the guy in the background's face gets redder the longer it goes on and the more laughter he tries to hold in.
Some brilliant silent laughing.
I love it when he gets angry about films.
The starter before the Sex and the City 2 main course.
And the dessert: FЯED
i loooove the camera shot of simon and mark just listening to the film clip not laughing HAHAHAHAHA
'Kate Hudson's a high powered lawter? in not having that'
the man is a genius!!!!!
Have a double wedding. Problem solved.
When he's impersonating Kate Hudson he sounds EXACTLY like Quentin Tarantino.
Mark looks like he's trying to internalize a 'Nam flashback while the clip is playing.
"She has less of a physical presence than an intellectual presence"
I'M LAWYER AND I'M NOT FAT. Classic.
I love the tone deafness of tech exemplified in that right next to this review is an ad trying to get me to buy Bride Wars through CZcams. Brilliant.
Imagine acting in and producing a film and then you watch this review of it! aaaahaha especially the end
Mark should try stand up comedy. The delivery and punchlines are on point.

She's so good.
in the same year that the unborn, transformers 2 and terminator salvation came out
This review is hilarious review - Mark Kermode - is on top form.
Excellent.
I don't think it's the fact that it was a woman who was a helicopter pilot.
It was the fact that MEG RYAN was a helicopter pilot.
Quite nice that we're in the year 2022 and Mark's praising Kate Hudson's acting in Glass Onion and other things.
I might a cold emotionless man, but what's wrong with moving their wedding date? Is it really the end of the world if one of them pushed it back by a month? I just don't get this premise, why make a film about it?
They both want to be “June brides” and would thus have to wait a whole year. It’s just a contrivance to set up the schedule clash.
"I'm a LAWYER, but I'm not FAT!"
"Skin like this, face like this , describe it man!" lmao
"people will tell you it's a chick flick.
Only if you ground it up and served it to battery hens."
Someone should put that on a t-shirt.
Lol the "eyebrows and teeth" bit slayed me. I love his rants about shit films
I am embarrased to admit I have watched this clip about fifteen times in total, but it has everything Kermode. Impressions, a deserved but spirited rant, comments by Mayo, and a reality check for the cancer that is Kate Hudson.

Oh, I absolutely love Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo. Welcome back, guys! Another great review, not a movie on my to-see list, then!
Kermode and Mayo are back. Brilliant
probably the funniest review ive ever seen
I'm listening to the clip, and I'm just thinking, you could just have a joint wedding?
"Is this your Meg Ryan as a helicopter pilot" Hahahaha!
Wonder how much of these classic rants are scripted, or thought out beforehand or just top of the head stream of consciousness. If the later, Kermode needs to be given far props, not just as a film connoisseur and educator, but as a genuinely smart funny guy.

This may just be the best work Kermode has ever done.
Hilarious review, guys *:)*
very powerful ending
I can't believe that this review is 3 years old already, where does time go?
BOOM it’s 2022
I get your point, but the thing is Mark Kermode is one of those critics who actually isnt looking for oscar films- he is looking for films that do just entertain (hence his own little awards show he does) He understands genre, and isn't snobby about films that others may look down on- (liking Basic Instinct 2, High school Musical, Twilight, because they were right for their target audience, and fit the genre) He just wants it to be good- and if it is a comedy, fit its genre- i.e be funny.
My favourite movie review of all time!
Dayummmm go off Mark!!!
Man, there were ALOT of bad romcoms from 2009-2013 weren't there?
it would be interesting for someone to compare how differently mark reviews the worst of female-targeted cinema versus the worst of male-targeted cinema. i know he's really ripped into like, michael bay, so i'm not accusing him of any bias, i just bet someone has and i'd be curious to see such an analysis.

He generally highlights his disgust at any misogynistic overtones in movies also
that would be amazing - kermode for film 2009 would be a smash hit!!
Who is "Vera Wang"? Is she a character from the Chinese edition of Coronation Street?
Does this answer your question?
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vera_Wang
It was a miracle Chris Pratt's career didn't end with that film.
LOL I'm gonna make GIFs of Mark's impersonations
Mayo: 'Skin like this, face like this' - Describe what you're doing ! :D
I love this guy
Very funny review, just one question - can anyone tell me what the kit kat thing's about?
I know it's some sort of running joke between them, about a supposed boycott of Nestle (or just Kitkat?) for some reason, but can anyone tell me what the originial idea behind it was?
Hell of a Quentin Tarantino impersonation by Mark, there.
Eyebrows and teeth. Dear God what a perfect assessment.
It's about two women who claim to be friends but in reality are jealous of each other and see their weddings as competition with each other.
What's all this about Kit Kats?
its a guilty pleasure 😊
6:49 - best kermode moment ever
when he said all eyebrows and teeth i thought id have a heart attack laughing LOLOLOL
I watched this on a plane recently purely based on the Dr's review. I gave up. it was that bad.
This was delicious from beginning to end.
Thank God he didn't have to quit :)
The Good Dr hosting Film 2009? Means I'd have to start watching TV again. Petition time!
|Did you watch this on TV or listen to it on the radio?
ha ha needed a rant from old Kermode
He never hams up, he's always been that mad when he's seen a rubbish movie. I remember hearing him on Mayo's Radio 1 show about 10 years ago, before he became more widely known, and he was required listening even then. His review of Robin Williams's "Bicenntennial Man" was a corker....

I remember being dragged to see this in high school. It was the first bad film I've ever seen that I didn't even try to apologize for out of sheer embarassment afterwards. It was utterly vile and deserving of untramelled scorn. The worst film I have ever, ever seen.
As Gandalf the Grey would say, "There is only one Kit-Kat... except ring!
"Simon, you don't have to see them" - Mark you ooze entertainment.
@godbotherer1909 "he bangs on about how great Cannibal Holocaust when it shows real animals killed for entertainment." If you've ever even listened to Kermode before you'll know how he is vehemently against actual cruelty to animals and children in films.
@leapoffaith20
Yeah i think it's just Meg Ryan as a helicopter Pilot, tbh Sigourney Weaver could be a pilot or Cate Blanchet. Kermode just knows miscasting when he sees it.
Kate Hudson is as pretty as her mother but with about 1/8 her likeability or charisma.
Mark, I noticed that some people love SILENT RUNNING and Some people Hate it! I see 3 reviews that are 5 stars followed by 3 reviews that are one star. Why is there such a wide range of opinions on this movie, please explain!
Help!
Mark speaks about Anne and Kate Hudson as if they’re like students and he’s the headmaster and he’s speaking to their parents comparing them
@jimmymckooel I know, I very rarely agree with him but find his reviews hilarious.
LOL look at the dude in the background 7 minutes in.
That's one of the funniest things about this clip. That guy trying not to explode with laughter!
@MadameMao1 Apart from Almost Famous
lol at the guy on the left at 7:51
wait why were they boycotting kitkat?
I for one would like to gear orangesplodge's opinion on Mark Kermode. I don't think the 73 comments on this video were quite enough.
meg ryan is a helicopter pilot
eyebrows slowly go up and down in little demonstrations (switches to normal angry voice) I mean it was ABSOLUTELY...HORRENDOUS! (Shouting) I thought I want to go and punch someone after watching this. It's 2 hours long, it makes "7 Years in Tibet" feel like a short film. I mean.....words fail me!"

@Luke Howles
I like white chocolate kit kats.
I have to reveiw this for English AS level.
@trekkerhappy Perhaps you are right, but do not vilify his portentions, ken?
Not to "one up" but I had a worse start to 2009 a few weeks later, unless the film is worse than the death of a parent and then I'll be glad I've avoided it (because it looked so horrible)
I don't want Kermode to lose his job, but now I'm compelled to find 10 worse movies, and will keep a list for the year! XD
Why were they boycotting KitKat's?
If memory serves me correctly they decided to add flavours, like green tea and orange? And they are kitkat purists so they took
umbrage.
it was pretty funny
7 people are off to apply Moulinex mixers to their eyes.
@leapoffaith20 someone thinks he means a woman? some people!
bride wars i think
I don't really think he's hamming it up for the camera in the slightest. He would probably be the exact same way without it.
why are they boycotting kitkat?? and hello to jason
