Karan Singh, the former Prince Regent of Jammu & Kashmir, whose father Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession acceding to India two months after Independence in August 1947, is turning 90 years old today. He speaks to ThePrint's National Affairs editor Jyoti Malhotra about his life as a former royal to commoner, how Indira Gandhi should have struck a much harder bargain in Shimla with Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and how the RSS version of Hindutva is very different from Vendantic Hinduism's capacity to open itself to everyone.

Another bhakth trying to explain government heavy handed maneuvers in j&k. Union territory is a status lower than a regular state. When our founding fathers promise something and in later years surreptitiously remove it, intigrity of our nation is at stake. What he is trying to explain is, article 370 was not the problem with j&k. It was the nasty politics and Pakistan. Every once in a while you may have to take criticism with a grain of salt. That's the what democracy is all about.

Bhakth nor non bhakth, special status was never the root cause of the bloodshed. Please understand that. It was the insurgencies and successive govts failing to handle the situation. Many countries have special status and manage problems more gracefully. However, if removing the status was the agenda, why dissolve the state government and lock up its residents?

This interview sums up what ails Jammu and it's defunct leadership. It is more of an apology. Look how he defends Mehboobas and worst, Mirwaiz. Tourism getting affected due to covid the world over was shattered due to abrogation of 370. One who, despite his position very close to Gandhi's and Nehrus, couldn't get justice for his father or a holiday on his birthday or even get Dogri included in Sch 8, blames 370 abrogation as a reason for unemployment in JK. I am sorry to say that this interview confirms what many have been feeling about the gentleman.

He was selected by Gandhi and Sardar Patel gave in to Gandhi s stupid choice way too easily. It was a total stupidity of Gandhi that Nehru became prime minister of provisional government and later the prime minister of India.
Nehru was interested in becoming big and great, he was interested in leading the groups that called itself non-aligned. I remember when Chinese stared moving their army into Indian territory he could not and did not create a strong opposition to his so called "Hindi Chinee Bhai Bhai". In-fact congress was asking for dominion status and when later the likes of Bhagat singh questioned the congress intention on freedom. Gandhi ( the dirty old man) seeing his and his bootlickers prestige eroding .. quickly changed the track and asked for full freedom. Sure RSS was not existing in name as it exist today.. but it was made by same set of people who were more assertive towards Indian independence and were part of post independence congress ( read about naram and garam dal) you will know ur answer.

He seems to be full of contradictions in his views on being appointed for several government positions(which he must have got due to his royal connections)as he lost the position & privileges of royalty. Then again on his double standards on Emergency(cabinet given different perception & ground reality another, which the whole world clearly knew). Again on post removal of Article 370 & 35, he expects India to continue to extend J & K people 'Special Status" when that provision was provided clearly for a TEMPORARY period. Also, his feeling soft on the so called Gupkar party leaders for being kept on house arrest who were part of the dispensation when inhuman atrocities on Kashmir hindus were being committed all through out the past century. All this reeks of double standards & not a great character of a true democratic representataive.

dr. singh, how on earth in an egalitarian scheme of democracy does a kashmiri feel more special than maharashtrian or a tamilian? on what basis? enough of the sleight of hand mentality and continual idiocy!!! to say that the sky did not fall is to ignore the hooliganism and gangsterism of the kashmiri politicians always dangling the sword of damocles over india and its sordid aftermath. it is just that you have accepted the death and disaster as no big deal. unacceptable, i say.

I disagree with KARAN SINGH when he says that his father signed and opted for the accession to India and that his family's rule over J&K for a century was exemplary is a total lie. They ruled Muslim majority State with iron hand and deprived its state subjects particularly Muslims from education, and prosperity, if a large knife was found with a Muslim he would face six months rigorous imprisonment . Why was Sheikh Abdullah and all other Muslim leaders against Dogra rule was because of these hardships they were facing. Whole State of Jamun and Kashmir is not the part of India its a disputed territory and its future can only be decided by the people through plebiscite.
