  • Toni and Gary’s beautiful but boring four-bedroom home has had over 70 showings in two months… And they haven’t received a single offer. Sofie says the spotless and de-cluttered home is in great shape, but it makes a flat first impression. In spite of the home’s competitive price, she says, its lackluster décor, ratty sofas, and missing kitchen table are giving potential buyers the wrong idea.
    In order to upgrade the home from builder basic to create the all-important wow factor, Sofie comes up with a $6,000 plan. Desperate to sell, the couple is on board from the start…And as Anthony and the team neutralize the paint colors, and upgrade the lighting, plumbing and closet fixtures, Sofie teaches Toni and Gary how to set the stage for a sale. The results are phenomenal…And within 24 hours, so are the offers…

    The view along that street and the neighborhood with all the houses basically looking the same - scary!
    No green, no trees, no front gardens, endless straight road, nearly no space between the houses - the look of those houses kind of reminded me of soldiers standing next to each other with no individuality.

      @@toniquinn3440 I think your house looked great, but what put me off by the neighborhood was that it is a subdivision, and there are way too many houses that look alike - sort of like a modern Levittown. I've never had children, and so that's possibly why it doesn't appeal to me. However, I can easily see what it would be difficult to stand out in a neighborhood like that and convince someone to love your house instead of another almost identical house. If the neighborhood had more trees, it would help, and perhaps it does by now. I would have replaced the round brass door knobs with brushed nickel levers - that's what I did in my house in Palm Springs, but I also renovated the bathrooms, kitchen, and living room. Your kitchen would have looked a lot better if it had not been so brown. Also, all my sinks are undermounted, and I have high end German (Hansgrohe) faucets in both houses. In addition, I have quartz countertops in the kitchens, but those are expensive if you are just going to sell your house.
      I have a hard enough time finding my house on my street as it is, and all the houses in my neighborhood in Los Angeles are very individualized. I painted the front of my house SW "Really Teal" to help find it, and I also have a huge agave furcraea macdougalii in the front yard, which is from oaxaca and is the largest agave in the world. Mine it now taller than the house and will reach more than 30 feet high when it blooms, but it takes about 30 years to do that. This plant helps me find my house more than anything else does, and I have plenty of room for it in my front yard. Here's what it will look like when it blooms: pics.davesgarden.com/pics/2018/10/09/Kell/b5f7d5.jpg

      The example furniture coordinates colors and materials with the house. Just from memory I noticed the plants in the kitchen almost foreshadowed the green living room. The green of the couch went with the walls and the couch wood went with the cabinet. Because of this the furniture blends with the house. Designers also tend to accept a larger presence from higher quantity furniture. Both examples looked higher quality in materials and design. The first couch and cabinet didn't really relate to anything else. Anyone who likes green will love the first house. I have nothing to say about the first couch and cabinet, which means I either missed something or it's just a mediocre choice for this house.

      We spent about $1000 on the house at the beginning of each year. One year we took out a giant dirty tree. Another
      year we had the wood floors refinished. Another year we put ceiling fans in and painted. This year we bought
      matching rugs for the living room and dining room. That way the house always looks pretty good, and you are not
      faced with so many needed repairs/costs at one time.

    The worst thing in this house was the kitchen :( Too big, too bulky, too dark. I would have removed the part that separated it from the rest of the room (the part with the sink) to open the kitchen up or at least give this part a nice facing (? is that the right word? yes I used a dictionary for that one^^). The mix of materials (differnt colors, diffent woods) they had there after the modifications didn't help at all.

    • @larsedik
      @larsedik Před rokem

      If you remove the peninsula, not only do you lose the sink, but you lose countertop workspace and cabinets - not a good idea at all. As it is now, the work triangle (sink/fridge/stove) is very small, making the kitchen very efficient - at least for one person. I hate excessively large kitchens, and I don't want anyone in my kitchen when I am cooking - they just get in the way. With the peninsula as it is, one can still converse with people not in the kitchen, and there can be good separation.
      I do hate the colors in the kitchen, and it does look very cheap. The towel on the oven door handle should be removed before showing the house - it looks sloppy and says that there is no proper storage for kitchen towels. There should be a towel rack inside the cabinet door below the sink.

      That's been going on for awhile now. I believe this season is from 2007 or 2008; about the same time the U.S. real estate market crashed real estate markets in other countries also suffered a bit, although Canada's rebounded relatively quickly. Prices had screamed out of control, especially in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver - just nuts what was selling for a million. I'm not sure what this family spent $6,000 on, though. The paint made the biggest difference. The accessories were so so, and the furniture purchased ("sofa," dining table and chairs and kitchen table and chairs) didn't top more than $1500; the light fixtures were also rather "blah" - the lowest common denominator I felt. Well, at least the house sold, which was what they wanted. Funny how wanted to move to a "neighborhood" and then ended up in a new build that essentially looked like a high end slum. Those houses SO close together - no landscaping at all - that open "common" area in the back - no privacy. YUCK!

    I like this show and I've learned a lot But in that bathroom the painting under the shelves looked like I did it, not professional at all. I think tastes have changes drastically in 2 years since this came out, that "contemporary vibe" is not what is selling houses these days.

    The kitchen's awful and small for a house of its size. That new sofa is boring. I'd Have got a longer, more stylish one in a lovely contemporary colour, making it a feature. But an oatmeal 2-seater? Meh.

And with a little bit of common sense there is no need of a selling consultant....(Her coat is awful, by the way, no taste, no style). The living room in the "model house" is totally repelling. And how closely the houses are standing from each other - horrid.
