As a person that lives in arizona, I confirm that the asphalt is really hot. Someone in my town got 3rd degree burns from falling and laying on the concrete too long.
As an AZ resident, I can co firm this isn't true, however, you can get extreme burns on the bottoms of your feet if you aren't wearing shoes. And I have seen cheap flip flops melted to the street when left out for multiple days.
I am also from Phoenix Arizona and one year it got up to 128 f (although not nearly this bad, it was really just a thin, black outline) but my shoe did indeed melt

for anyone unaware: a foolproof way to tell if your dog will burn their paws on the concrete is to put the back of your hand on the concrete and test the temperature! if it burns the back of your hand, it’ll burn your puppy’s little toes and you need to get them shoes. it wouldn’t be an immediate burn, but extended periods of time of their bare paws on hot pavement will lead to pain/blistering/etc. for your pup, so prevention is important. (and the opposite is true as well! in snow, ALWAYS have booties on your dog to avoid frostbite, and in cold weather, make sure it doesn’t sting to touch the ground with your bare skin!)
this only applies to certain breeds for the snow portion - my dog would not at all let us put booties on him for snow. nor would he let us bring him inside. he's a snow dog.

One thing I will say is sometimes in Arizona the road itself doesn’t exactly melt but it softens, and warnings are usually issued to drive as minimally as possible because you may get tar stuck on your tires which can damage them. I’m speaking from experience of living in the Sonoran desert, I also used to pick apart the road whenever it happened.
I made a similar comment - poor quality control on the asphalt mix, or inappropriate mixtures for conditions can have this result also. Hotter parts of the world require different mixtures and technique/equipment to properly surface a road

I live in AZ and grew up in the Mojave desert. When it gets hot enough, the tar in the roads liquifies slightly and will transfer to your shoes. Big trucks also put massive divots in the roads at intersections after a while.
I drove trucks, and I live in Texas. I definitely don’t think that any roads in Earth get that hot to the point where walking would melt a shoe or burn you. Arizona is = to Texas. We don’t have that, so Arizona don’t either.

DFW, San Antonio etc are worse because of the reasons you mentioned (humidity) But as far as the heat goes, AZ mostly never reaches these numbers. Sure it’ll happen here and there, but it’s the same as Texas in most cases (112< )

I live in the Valley and can confirm, shoes don't melt like this but the part about walking dogs is very true. It's either the dog shoes or walk them early in the morning. People can cook eggs on the street or bake cookies on their dashboard out here. Leaving your kids or pets in the car when you run into the store can be a death sentence also.
In Australia we had roads melt shoes...but they don't melt like that. In fact, the asphalt of the road will become soft LONG before you get that kind of stringy melt. Instead, what happens is that the soles of your shoes will become softened and flat, erasing or cracking open the grip patterns that you can normally see underneath. This makes the shoe a horrible slip and trip hazard as the bottom becomes a mess of irregular, loose parts and smooth surfaces.
I will say I’ve lived in Arizona before and it can get hot enough to melt cheap shoes on sidewalks(where I lived). It really only happened if you were walking for a long time, or if you stood in one spot for a while, and only on especially hot days. The melting isn’t that noticeable until you get home and see the tread ends have indents from walking, and small strings where the corners would stick to the sidewalk and pull. Again though, this isn’t the norm. This really only happens on REALLY hot days(like a random heat wave or something). Typically these days, you just wanna stay inside, so most people don’t notice it

One thing I will say is sometimes in Arizona the road itself doesn’t exactly melt but it softens, and warnings are usually issued to drive as minimally as possible because you may get tar stuck on your tires which can damage them. I’m speaking from experience of living in the Sonoran desert, I also used to pick apart the road whenever it happened.
I made a similar comment - poor quality control on the asphalt mix, or inappropriate mixtures for conditions can have this result also. Hotter parts of the world require different mixtures and technique/equipment to properly surface a road

I live in AZ and grew up in the Mojave desert. When it gets hot enough, the tar in the roads liquifies slightly and will transfer to your shoes. Big trucks also put massive divots in the roads at intersections after a while.

I live in the Valley and can confirm, shoes don't melt like this but the part about walking dogs is very true. It's either the dog shoes or walk them early in the morning. People can cook eggs on the street or bake cookies on their dashboard out here. Leaving your kids or pets in the car when you run into the store can be a death sentence also.

In Australia we had roads melt shoes...but they don't melt like that. In fact, the asphalt of the road will become soft LONG before you get that kind of stringy melt. Instead, what happens is that the soles of your shoes will become softened and flat, erasing or cracking open the grip patterns that you can normally see underneath. This makes the shoe a horrible slip and trip hazard as the bottom becomes a mess of irregular, loose parts and smooth surfaces.
That’s why you should never walk on the roads 💀

I will say I’ve lived in Arizona before and it can get hot enough to melt cheap shoes on sidewalks(where I lived). It really only happened if you were walking for a long time, or if you stood in one spot for a while, and only on especially hot days.
The melting isn’t that noticeable until you get home and see the tread ends have indents from walking, and small strings where the corners would stick to the sidewalk and pull.
Again though, this isn’t the norm. This really only happens on REALLY hot days(like a random heat wave or something). Typically these days, you just wanna stay inside, so most people don’t notice it

I can back this up. In the summer it CAN reach 100 to 120 degrees out but the shoes dont fall apart. But dogs paws can! Also cats and other animals. Especially in phx. Flag , strawberry and others are really cold and dont get NEARLY as hot as phx.
