  • HEADS UP PUTTING
Looking at the hole when you putt can dramatically improve your putting by reducing the number of 3 putts you have per round AND increasing the number of 1 putts?
Too good to be true…? Well, it’s not - and I speak from personal experience that this exercise transformed my putting (saved it, actually!) and continues to help me to this day.
If you want to be a good putter, you need good speed control. Most golfers aren’t very good at this skill, primarily because they don’t give their brain the information it craves to help it determine how hard to hit a putt.
Poor putters spend too much time staring at the ball, trying to control their stroke and learning little about target. The best putters are absorbed by the target, with little to no care about their stroke mechanics.
Heads Up Putting helps to improve your speed and distance control by focusing your attention on what's really important - THE TARGET.

Rob, I just tried this on my indoor mat and scored 10 out of 10 in the hole using this method. Nothing short, which is my usual miss, and nothing off the end of the mat, indicating too hard. I am definitely going to use this on the course. Thanks.

Rob. When it works it’s phenomenal l. When I’ve failed, it basically my thought- focus goes to my hands and it causes pulls, shoves, and loss of power. Any suggestion on how to keep the putter moving without interjecting the hands?

I have been using the looking at the hole putting for about six weeks. It has really improved my lag putting plus short and medium putting. The only time I look at the ball now is on exceptionally long putts after I determined the amount of swing using the method. I found with a big back swing I often didn’t make good ball contact. Overall, I’m very pleased and have no plans to return to looking at the ball while putting. Also, I like seeing my playing partners’ mouths dropping open when they see some of the putts I am now making. 😊

Rob, I have been doing this for several years after reading it in golf magazine. 1 of the top putting coaches found 1 and 10 people needed to put to the hole. My 3 putts disappeared, unless they were 30' or more. I continue to look at the hole even when I putt, unless 25' or more away. My distance control Improve dramatically. I invested two weeks of practice and I was converted. I can use different putters and see no real differences, the mind adjusts quickly. Thanks for your videos.

I have done this the last few years. I find it especially helpful for the longer putts. The subconscious mind is heavily involved. My best results happen when I simply focus on the target. My worst results happen when at the last second I let other thoughts creep in..like "my buddies will think I am crazy for trying this" . If I stick to my routine and just relax my mind, it works well...esp on the 30 and 40 footers (which most amateurs often have in a round). A center shafted putter may work better for most people.

Been putting this way for about 6 years now. Left hand low as well. Wouldn't go back. Makes it so much easier. I only look at the spot at the hole that I think the ball will go in at. I see the cup as a clock and after I've read the break I picture it going in at 3:00 or 7:30 or whatever part of the hole I believe is correct. And you have to trust it. It works. You can't try it for a few weeks and give up. This takes time but will pay off. Thank you Rob for this video.

What is amazing that this works for lag puts and short putts. The other amazing thing is that your brain factors in the break. The key for me is to focus on the smallest spot on the hole. (Like you said). The only problem is if there is movement from another player in my range of sight it can really throw me off. I think you’re right about trusting the putt. Nice video

My comment was aimed at Johnny Miller who commented about Speith going that way because Johnny thought it was a sign of desperation! I disagreed with him. But, facts are facts, the best putters don’t do it that way. But, it would be interesting to see if they would even be better if they did. I have to say the only time I had trouble with it was for very long putts, like over 50ft.

Back in 2020 my pro made me do exercises where I looked at the hole during putting. The first putt was literally a big duff 😂 but 5-ish min into the session it made so much sense, and I ended up implementing that drill into my game. What we also did was adding some wrist action into the stroke, more on longer putts and almost none on the 3-4 footers.
These two adjustments have freed up my stroke, leading to so so much better both speed and directional control.

love those slow motion putt close ups showing the club path vs. exact moment that the club strikes the ball, very convincing! I've been using it on longer putts, and in fact, I probably have been doing this 90% of the time where the focus is really on the target then I look at the ball when I putt....but what I have found is with putts >15 feet, keeping an eye on the target (not the ball), really helps with the lag putting. this technique is a keeper for me!

  • @seegarsmkr

Rob, been using this for a few months. I am much better than I used to be but when it is most effective I have to be relaxed with the stroke. When I try and "hit" the ball and lose feel it doesn't go well. When I am free and feeling well with my stroke it is MUCH better than looking down. Now I am going to have my first lesson with putting, getting better with green reading and hopefully feel for speed.

I had problems with distance control about a summer ago. I went to the practice green, and did heads up putting while on the practice green. It soon became my standard warm-up for putting before a round. I became so comfortable with heads up putting and my distance control improved so much, that I decided to use it during my rounds. My putting‘s improved immeasurably since I started heads up putting. One of the huge benefits of heads up putting is that your head stays steady throughout your entire putting stroke.

i decided to do this a year ago. it saved my putting too. i was doing it as a drill and noticed how crazy better my feel was for everything.. break, speed, flow, accuracy. as soon as I heard, Spieth was doing it with success and winning, I made the decision and never turned back. not a silver bullet, but there was a dramatic uptick in ability for sure. soon I noticed that for longer putts I kinda needed to look at the ball but in that case my eyes jump to the hole soon as I strike it. It’s not full proof, of course and one thing I realized is I need to not be sloppy about it and not move my head around. and i need a routine. But everything you said I found to be 100% accurate in my case.

    Hi Rob,
I followed your aim point course a couple of years ago at Lumine golf (Andy, Frank and I)
This improved already a lot my putting. (hdcp from 11 to 8)
    About looking at the target:
After a short practise on the putting green, I tried this yesterday on the course (Daurada golf).
It felt strange first, but after a while i started making really long putt’s.
People on my flight said, waw you’re putting is really good today 🙂🙂
So, bottom line, i’m convinced and will try to use and improve my putting

Best thing I have ever done along with claw grip. Ive had 3 x 3putts in 6 weeks!!! I also take 3 slow looks to the hole and then stay on it at the end and putt. The key word is TRUST. If you know your distance, if you know your putter, if you trust your putting stroke its takes all the anxiety out of the long lag putts and any doubt over the 3-4 four foot putts. Practice for a awhile and don't tell anyone what you're doing and see if they pick it up. Cheers

Interestingly Rob I was watching a video on "Time" (series called Closer to the Truth) and the neuroscientist said because of the way our brains perceive time and process it, we are always dealing with the past. We see, hear or feel something but the time we process it ,it's gone...so to your point, the sooner you move from seeing the cup and putting (within reason) the better...standing over a putt is not ideal!

I’ve putted heads up since 1999.
After watching a senior golfer practicing using this process, I decided to try it:
    • started from 2’ out with10 balls
    • it felt natural & then went to 3’, 4’ etc etc etc
    • have never gone back to looking at the ball
    Here’s what I’ve found:
    • Once the pre shot routine is complete & I’m locked in to looking at the hole, my focus is the target & I actually do NOT even think of where the ball is in my stroke
    • This takes away ALL the pressure of making the putt, I’m “in the moment” of the stroke
    • use it for ALL length of putts
    • the best part is, my head is steady & does NOT move
    • my takeaway is short but my follow through is long
    • I have great tempo, rhythm & timing
I have won many tournaments including The 2019 Fiji Open Golf Championship as an Amateur with scores of 75, 75 & 78 on a 75.3 course rating from the tips as a 6 handicapper

Rob, I've watched this video several times. I've listened to the Podcast on heads-up putting and been trying several combinations as you suggest, i.e. always look at the hole, look at the ball at the last minute, look at the ball only, on longer shots, try and look at the ball and the hole at the same time (since I'm left-eye dominant). My problem is mostly around my inability to centre the face and get consistent contact which means my balls fall short or worse miss their intended line slightly, while looking at the hole only. For the moment, looking at the ball when I can't see both the hole and the ball, at the same time, is not really comfortable since I'm inconsistently seeing the ball/hole and losing concentration as well. My most success so far has been, waiting until the last minute to fix my eyes on the ball as it guarantees (with good practice strokes as you suggest) I'm hitting the ball correctly on these much harder long shots. I"m still stubbornly trying to figure out how look at the hole all the time because it's much better to see the hole than just memorise the swing, before looking at the ball. My thought is that if I could make my rocking movement perfect and fix my lower body perfectly, I could count on contacting the centre of the club on the intended line while watching the hole. This is where I'm focussing for now.
My question is do you have any recommendations on how I can fix this putting turn so that it is perfect, i.e. I don't have to look at face of the club going into the ball? Do I, for example, focus on the torso, memorise the distance my club goes back while rocking, etc.? Or, do you think it's better to look back at the face and ball at the last moment, on the longer shots?
Finally, here's an analoguous version of this existential debate in snooker, czcams.com/video/hVd80V0_K0U/video.html. The old-timer, one the best of all time, says he has always looked at the cue ball (ball for us golfers), but learned to focus on the object ball (the golf hole) and then pause his movement to put it back on the cue ball to get better longer shots. This is what I'm doing. That is, I'm looking at the hole until I need to hit it (see video from 2:45 to 3:30)

I tried this on a practice green three years ago and immediately drained my first three . . . and they were all from a spot over 20 feet from the cup! For the next 15 minutes I astonished myself by putting every ball either in or very close and not once did I mis-hit the ball because I wasn't looking at it. It reminded me more of shooting free throws at a basketball hoop than golf. On the course it has speeded my play dramatically. I don't need to walk around eyeballing the green to get long putts close. Basically it's point and shoot. It took 4-5 strokes off my score from day 1 and I've never gone back.

Good video. I’ve been doing this for a few weeks. Don’t fully trust it on long putt’s yet since i have to hit the ball harder. Tried it once and crushed it! 😅😅. The 15’ and in has a good feel. I did miss a 3’ putt last week so It caused me to look at the ball on the really short one’s but I think that will be worked out with practice. Very nice results otherwise. Give it a try.

Tried it after watching Spieth. Memory decay is a big issue. When looking at the ball, if I don’t get the putt away immediately (Monty), I lose all feel for the putt. I’m the guy who walks into the kitchen and can’t remember why he’s there. Looking at the target definitely helps. In snooker we look at the object ball not the cue ball. Excellent video. I’ll forward it too to Harry Maguire…for his football. I’m sure he’s not looking at ANYTHING 😀. No point sending it to anyone at Chelski…😂😂😂

Rob, I haven’t tried this yet but will next time I’m practicing my putting. However, I find that my putting is at its best when I see the hole with my peripheral vision. You can actually see both the ball and the hole at the same time if your head is slightly behind the ball. It helps you to visualise the path to the hole.

I always hear people say "keep your eyes on the ball and wait until you hear the ball fall in the hole" they tell me this but when I see them putt they always take their eyes off the ball, I have a cataract and have found that I have trouble with speed because of my depth perception so I am now leaving the flag in the hole, which has helped, I will, however, try this, thank you

I have been putting this way for over 10 years. I find it the easiest method for putting and it feels very natural. Contact with the ball is not an issue for me. The only time I don't putt this way is if I'm tapping the ball a foot on a fast down hill putt or hitting it 70 feet where I have to take a big backswing. I'm always looking at the point I'm putting it to. If there is a 5 foot rollout, I'm looking at the point 5 foot short of the hole. This makes me feel my putting stroke is always the same. I'm always putting to the distance that I'm looking at.

very interesting. i'm a lifetime hockey player and look where i'm shooting. i've wondered about the same for putting as i'm just taking the game up. i asked my instructor and he is very open minded and said some do and it with success and it was worth exploring for yourself. i just hope i can do it without undue steering which is exactly how you shoot a hockey puck.

    Hello Rob,
    Enjoyed your video as always.
I did try 'heads up' putting but unfortunately had a bad time of it. Struggleed with distance control. Did well in practice but struggled in competitions.
I liked your thoughts in the last part of the video by returning back to the ball with the eyes and releasing the putter.
Will give 'heads up' another try as I do like the concept.
Keep up your good work and videos.

I love the idea and am going to give it a try. Using the comparison to other sports however, is not accurate. In other sports where striking is a skill, the player looks at the object to be struck. For example, when serving a volleyball or tennis ball, kicking a soccer ball, hitting a baseball, shooting a hockey puck, or hitting a 9 iron into a green, the athlete looks at the object.

An alternative is to pick out a spot/mark on the green between the hole and the ball...maybe 3-4 feet from the ball and use that as an aim point....might be better for longer putts.
