I like the storey about the Bridge soldier who told his buddy that he could hear bagpipes. His friend said " Dont be stupid they don't have bagpipes in france". They were both amazed when Bill Millin led a platoon of commandoes from the beach arrived for their rendezvous with the Bridge Glider men.
I can follow that up with an account of my visit to Pegasus Bridge decades later. I was admiring the bridge and its story before I headed up to Ouistriam ( I hope I spelt that correctly) where there was another D-day object I wanted to see " The Bunker" the French call it). When yes you have guessed it. I could hear (for my pleasure) - Bagpipes. I think ever since 1944, in the first week of june, they hold the Bill Millin bagpipe contest. I must have listened to a dozen or so pipers (maybe there were more). Each piper spent time playing his pipes in a side street before he went before the judging committee in search whatever the best prize was. So get to Ouistriam Normandy in the first week of June to hear some fine bagpiping.

The only response I feel after listening to John Millin, Bill Millin's son, is a stunned silence with amazement that such men existed. They put this whiny, dishonest generation to shame.
They would turn in their graves if they could see what the country has become.
