Hi, my name is Merrill Kazanjian. New York City is an amazing place to go metal detecting. We have lots of parks, colonial history and great beaches for beach detecting. I have gone to all five boroughs of New York City To Metal Detect and beyond. I also currently own 19 metal detectors. I want to have the best and I want to help you choose the best as well. Targets like slag "space peanuts" and melted aluminum cans "camp crap" roll around in currents quick because of their round shape. Flat targets slide and kind of surf up and down, back and forth. I used to paint pennies and drop them at different spots using different color paints and years later I'm still finding some relatively close by and some went over a mile from being tossed in either a swim spot or where a colonial stage coach bridges crossed. There's a lot of physics behind how the creeks, streams and rivers move things. The ocean is hard enough to figure out between storms, tides, wind direction and even moon cycles can figure into the equation. I just know I love the gravel strips (cuts) out around waist high when they pop up then the water goes calm for a few days. It's pure detecting gold. It's a lot more work fighting the waves but a lot of targets sit in those cuts and they can't get hunted out they're always moving around like it's alive lol

I used to live in New Jersey when I was a kid, and we used to travel to Coney Island frequently to visit my grandmother. On the way there we would watch construction of the Verrazano bridge. Yea, I’m 72 years old. One note, though, it is not only one of the largest bridges in America. It is one of the biggest “suspension” bridges in the world. And down here on Palm Beach County beaches, we don’t have space peanuts….. but we do have a lot of GARBAGE THAT PEOPLE ARE TOO LAZY TO CARRY OFF THE BEACH! Sorry for screaming, but it’s really annoying how much crap I dig on the beach every day. 🤨

Love your content:) Have been metal detecting for almost a decade and even though my style is completely different than yours, it is always good to see how other people do it:) A few things i was wondering about, if you dig absolutely every target anyway, why waste any amount of time to narrow down what type of shape the target has? seems redundant and inefficient. After years of experimenting, i personally only dig really promising targets, yes you will miss the occasional outlyer, but you will end up fining much more high quality stuff because of the amount of time you are saving, if you live in an area with a low amount of good locations i understand the dig it all mentality, but for most people it is defenitely the wrong way to go if you want to increase your success, most gold and silver jewellery and shiny coins have usually very clear good signals.

Due to a bad harbor placement, along with the killing of waterways leading to the shore, our beaches do not replenish. They sand them every year using dredges, If you can get some time in while they are eroded down to rocks you can really find some stuff that has been there for years.

  • @spacefury65
    @spacefury65 Před rokem +1

Merrill, back in the early 80's, Orchard Beach had such bad erosion, they brought in dredged sand from Sandy Hook. Dropped off after beach season and left on dry sand like dunes. Then they spread it out all along the mid-wet sand and high water mark. The SILVER that you would find ON TOP just walking the dunes was crazy...

I've always used aluminium foil and gently with a green side sponge pad rub the foil to lightly scratch it then spit on it and put the ring in it. Rub between fingers and it warms up and stinks of sulfur. Go as far as you like but a min or two is enough. Great on hammered coins and such. Leaves a nice patina.

The baking soda trick only really works on 999 silver. You just need to go buy an old cell phone charger, couple alligator clips and a stainless steel spoon. Water. Lots of salt and dash of lime juice and connect the spoon to the negative and ring or silver coin to positive and run current and whalaa. Been doing this for decades as I do shipwrecks and loads of beach stuff. You’re welcome.

Heyy what's up I been following for maybe 2 weeks been thinking about pursuing this as a serious hobby n I saw ur video for choosing your first detector. But was curious about more that can go underwater or can get wet cuz I know I'll be tempted too try close to the waters . N don't mind paying like 2 350 rn . Or should I save for a better one.

Another good way to clean up your silver treasures is after you do your boil & wipe them off, use an old tooth brush toothpaste and some baking soda again. You just might be super pleased w/the results and it doesn't take much elbow grease. Highly polished rings without any extra scratches or gouges.

This process works w/heavily tarnished jewelry even w/o the boil.

Just get proper silver polish. Baking soda is too abrasive.

Merril I call it seasonal detecting, here in Ohio, Pennsylvania you got into the woods in fall or winter weather permitting, why the older foundations present much older stuff, spring and summer more open field and parks but they become harder, why many already got the surface stuff and nobody replenished old silver

Hey there been detecting with the legend for a little over a month. I’ve kept everything I’ve found.. ie trashy targets etc. Do you think anyone would want a gallon ziplock of these items to help them learn their detector settings on good a bad targets for a debris field?

Instead of baking soda use washing soda. Works great. (Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda Detergent )

Great stuff ! I subscribed. I’m nyc guy . Question ? Do you ever “ bottle hunt “ in erosion areas ? I’ve met many a guy in Staten Island bars that told me old old valuable bottles appear in the eroded edge of beaches and such . Have you ?

    Hi,
I know of a mountain lake in which a stainless steel Rolex GMT Master (6,000.00 - 13,000.00) was dropped about 20 feet from shore at a floating dock around 51 years ago. At the time, it was, maybe 10 feet deep at that point from shore.
Do you suppose that it would be worth searching for it using a Deus II and SCUBA gear? The water is cold. The water is generally calm. Do you suppose that an heavy watch would stay in place in such a location for that period of time?

What you're not telling anyone is, the thousands of rings are generally pull tabs and beaver tails!😂😂
That's all good... Enjoy the fresh air and the scenery...🌹🕊️

In California I went out every day for a year and I never found one ring on a beach. I found rings at the parks but never on a beach. All I found at the beaches was change and junk metal. I believe it's because they use vehicles that sift the sand to collect trash every morning. They also add sand every year.
