  • THE PROBLEM WITH HOCKEY/ FA SKATEBOARDS. FA and Hockey have made some of the most popular skate decks. They are well known for the shape of their boards. Do these boards skate as good as people say they do? Are Hockey boards good for everyone? What are the pros and cons of the shape?

    They’ve been out since 2014 and they’re the only boards I ride (8.18). I’d also like to add that FA/Hockey boards feel different depending on what trucks you ride. (I ride Thunder and Ace) Crooked grinds feel better with Thunder because of their pinch and measurements

    • @MattDiGi
      @MattDiGi  Před rokem +4

      First time I rode and FA was in 2016! Thunder trucks have a longer wheel base than ace which is why that is. Also, they're definitely good boards but I've changed to not like the shape as much as I used to.

    • @urbanumbra6170
      @urbanumbra6170 Před rokem +3

      Everyboard feels different with different trucks especially indy vs thunder since theyre polar opposites (thunders are lower and stick out the wheelbase more)

    I know a guy who skates FA boards and his kickflips are high and his foot placement for his kickflip is more of his foot on the board so he has that high steezy kickflip

    • @CarsCatAliens
      @CarsCatAliens Před rokem +4

      Delay your flick a little bit and you can do the same.. (higher kick flips)... It was a Lizard King video I'm pretty sure. About, you guessed it. Kick flips lol

    • @MattDiGi
      @MattDiGi  Před rokem +2

      I typically have very good kickflips on them, but you need to have a slightly different flick for them to work well

    I have a size 13 shoe so I've always loved how much space there is on hockey boards definitely comfortable for me at least everyone is different though experiment a little find what you like and stick with it

    I’ve been riding hockey/fa since the beginning of summer, can confirm it’s definitely different. The trucks are awkwardly close to each other even though the nose is longer. Great feeling board riding but it’s the hardest board to get use to.

    Its an asymmetrical skateboard deck.
    Thats how boards began as asymmetrical.
    Meaning the tale was much larger than the nose.
    In the 60s you would have small board with nose much smaller than tale, often almost no nose at all.
    The decks and noses grew until in the mit to late 80s where the nose became bigger than the tale.
    Then started tappering off thru out the 90s until the famous popsicle shape deck most of you are probably accustomed too today.
    Yes, if you Google it will tell you popsicle boards became fad in the 70s. I would agree with that to a point. Those were on the plastic decks in the 70s with very little if any kick to the tale.
    The popsicle decks of the 70s were much different then in late 90s.
    For a larger more aggressive skater the asymmetrical deck with larger nose has some advantages.
    Especially if you are from that era of skating mid(late) 80s - mids 90s.
    The larger nose gives an extra comfort zone for a lot of burly skaters. When you are sending a huge ollie that larger steeper nose tells your front foot, you got this bro.
    It also allows for the multi tool effect.
    Meaning if your nose and tail are same length and height its always the same feel.
    With a nose and tail with different length and lay you have an option.
    Plus the trucks may sit differently from the transition of the tail, giving your feet 2 different feels in that reguard as well.
    As primarily a mid 80s to mid 90s skater I personally feel weird skating on a symmetrical deck.
    I like a big fat nose.
    Tucan Sam style.
    Popsicles decks always felt counterfeit in some ways to me, I use that term losely.

  • @leons7529
    @leons7529 Před rokem +4

    Hockey boards are good quality wood, however, their geometry doesn't make them suitable for every truck and wheel size out there. Don't take me wrong, I'm not saying that you can't skate them if you don't ride a specific truck brand, but your'e definitely going to notice differences depending on your setup. I tried them first on indys and I hated that hefty feeling and the "ghost pop" whenever I was trying nollie tricks (Eventually I got used to it, but it was not my favorite thing to skate). I changed them for some thunders and I can say I enjoyed the board more than I expected (I like the "quick" pop feeling that a lower truck provides) . But again, it really depends on what you're used to, and what works best for you, try them yourself.

    • @MattDiGi
      @MattDiGi  Před rokem

      that was a point I filmed and didn't use, if you get used to only riding FA and then your shop stops carrying them or something, you then have to buy online cause no other board really feels the same.

    just buy flight decks I've never even had one chip before. you always can skate them till you are finnacially ready to buy a new one. I never have to worry oh am I gonna break my board on this one maybe I shouldn't go for it since I only have 20 bucks left. They have two diffrent concaves you can choose from and lots of sizes.

    The problem with hockey is elitism. The attitude they convey to me, and it even seems to carry down to fandoms around wearing hockey shit, is just that age old too cool guy attitude. They will either drop the morose Derek Zoolander pose and start smiling or fall the fuck off really soon. The universe will only support posturing for so long.
