    Enjoyed your video.
Suggestions: the background music is too loud, it’s distracting. Please either turn it down or off. Also, people don’t care what you want or need. Telling people to subscribe because you want to retire does not motivate most people. Instead, tell them about your value proposition, what you offer in your video that will benefit them.
You NTG mike sounds good, but the SM7B sounds so much better, there’s no comparison. The NTG might sound better if you can get it closer and still keep it out of frame. Also, turn off all high-pass filters, if they’re on, so you can get some bass. The NTG sounds kind of thin.
You are entertaining and well spoken. Your channel should do well. Good luck.

I have this same mic and LOVE it, works great plugged into my PC for zoom calls, and works great on my camera for YT videos (different channel). Great review and video! The only thing I'd change to is the diety shotgun mic with built in wireless, now THAT is probably where rode is going next. Combining a wirelesspro system with a shotgun mic...

Great video! Subscribed. All the best and I'll be looking forward to your next upload!
I went on a similar journey with an array of microphones. Started with a USB Blue Snowball. Then ended up getting an Alesis 2 channel USB audio interface so I could use XLR microphones. Bought an MXL 770 Condenser mic. This worked for some time but eventually I discovered that the preamps in the Alesis meant it had a very cluttered noise floor. In my videos people would comment that there was a lot of hiss and the audio wasn't particularly clean. I don't make CZcams videos anymore but the technology of audio/video production has always fascinated me.
This year I bought a Rodecaster Pro II interface, an SM7B and a Podmic. The Pro II has extremely clean and powerful preamps and after testing both the SM7B and the Podmic, I ended up returning the SM7B. The Podmic works great for my application.
I'm relatively new to things like noise gates and compressors so I'm sure I'll have to work on how I have them applied to my microphone.

Hi Phil. After doing extensive overkill research on what mic to buy for my also very brand new channel, I went ahead and purchased the Rode Videomic NTG just yesterday. Today I thought I would continue to watch videos on CZcams about the Videomic to make me feel good about my decision and stumbled on to your video. First thing I noticed is that we choose the same music for our videos. Love that jazz! The most important part is that I assumed that when I got the mic I was just going to screw it on to my mini tripod with ease. Your video is the only one that pointed out that I need an adaptor to be able to mount this mic to my 1/4in tripod. Thank you for the heads up. I have subscribed to your channel and sent you a like. Well deserved since I most definitely learned something. By the way, We never get old, but the body does. :)

Personally I chose the Sennheiser MKE-600 over the NTG both are great mics but I find the 600 easier to post process for a wider variety of voices. However I mostly record other people than myself. The Deity S-mic 2 is another good choice for many. If you feel the NTG is good fit for your voice then it's the perfect mic for you.
The SM7B is also a good mic but I find it way over priced for what you get. At $100 the SM57 provides a similar preformance. Worse yet the SM7B is more of a status symbol that many people want seen in their shot.
I prefer the mic not to be seen in most cases in which case a shorter shotgun or even a pencil condenser will serve you well. The bonus is a short shotgun does well in many outdoor situations. There are a few times when a longer shotgun is needed outdoors but they usually don't do well indoors.
Also it seems odd these are still called "short" now that we have the on camera shotgun mics like the Rode Video mic, the Deity D4, and many others like them.

Great video. Thanks……. Ive been wondering if a shotgun would be good for our streams. I have pod mics but there is always (nearly always) two of us in streams and I would live to not rely on lav mics and keeping everything charged. My only problem would be how wide the cone is and would it capture two people sat next to each other fine? I use a RCP to and was wondering if you use the USB port of use an adaptor and run it through a XLR port. Thanks again.

I do both. For my road video might NTG I use an adapter and for my SM7B I go straight in to the XLR. If you’re doing a podcast, I would not rely on just one shotgun Mike in my opinion.

All the reasons I hear are a simple calse of finding the right microphone for the job. And that is a great reasoning! If one wants the microphone out of the way, of course, the SM7B will fall short. That doesn't make the SM7B a bad microphone, just the wrong one for the job. And while diehard fanboys of the SM7B will be triggered by the title nonetheles, I just can say: Good decision!

Thank you so much for your input. I hear that comment all the time. It’s when I first started doing CZcams videos. I hope I’ve learned a little more sense then. Blessings on your day.

Sorry but I think it’s a step backwards.
If you want more freedom to talk without a big mic and arm in front, I’m curious why you didn’t move to a lav mic rather than shotgun? You’ve already demonstrated how much better it is with the Wireless Go II.
An out of shot shotgun is always going to sound thinner than a lav mic.

Thanks for the video. However, I wanted the music to fade out. I kept hoping. Wishing. Wanting the music to go away. It didn't help. In fact. It spoilt your video. When listening to someone talk about audio, all I want to hear is the narrative. I don't want music. Any music. Sorry. Music has a place but in a documentary / talking head video, music has no place. Ever notice that news presenters and sports reporters have never used music over their voices? Yep. Because the voice is what matters. Music is a distraction and makes me wonder if it is being used to mask bad audio. The audio test of the VideoMic NTG was masked somewhat by the music. But, that said, I wish you well with your CZcams channel.

With all due respect, when you demoed one of your first video with the echoey room and found that annoying and distracting, well, in my own opinion, MUSIC is freakn annoying and distracting while someone is talking regardless of the quality of a mic... Just saying...

@@theoldvideoguy don't get me wrong, the information was there, it's just that you mentionnend in that video about the bad quality audio of your first try at vlogging. I find music very distracting from the inteded content, I prefer listen to you and hear the actual sound of the mics without having other sounds that do not even go through that mic... my preference is no music when you talk about a mic quality... jazz music is fine but in the right context... my 2¢...
