The Mighty Wurlitzer. Gems from the golden age of cinema, ballroom and theatre organs.

  • 2008 collection of organ-ic favorites. In Britain, owing largely to the enormous popularity of the organ at the Tower Ball, Blackpool, Wurlitzer has become a generic for all makes of cinema/theatre organ. Elsewhere, while the distinction may have been clearer, the Wurlitzer sound was rated superior to that of other `Unit' organs. Whereas eighteen of the tracks on this CD are of Wurlitzers, only five are Comptons although Compton built more British cinema organs than any other firm. Wurlitzer eclipsed its rivals, however, for as Geoffrey Wyatt stylishly observed (in At The Mighty Organ, in 1974) if Comptons [had] all the colors of the spectrum squeezed out on an artist's pallet, Wurlitzers had captured the rainbow itself. Bygone Day.

This is just wonderful. Sounds of an era in which those large theater organs were the showpiece of the fabulous movie palaces. Our Wurlitzer Theater pipe organ 235 special was installed in our Tivoli Theater, Chattanooga, Tenn. in 1924. It is still playable, but I can't think of a recent time when a concert was given with just the organ. As a side note, Edwin Lemare, the foremost organist of his day, was our civic organist. He served from 1924-1929, playing the awesome Austin pipe organ at the Soldiers and Sailors Auditorium.

uncle had a Wurlitzer in his cabin home up northern Michigan .I played it a lot. Neighbours came around and thought it was him. Gave it to a church to use. I almost got it, had an Estey Freedom he gave me 2 others before Estey, now have a Carnival Lowery. Mom and my Uncle encouraged me to play this instrument

Kathleen Gleeson I had a six stop Estey reed organ when I was a child. It had two rows of reeds one octave apart. The keyboard was split in the middle hence four of the stops. The remaining two were swell flaps and could be operated by the knee lever.

You are right, the young turks--on both sides of the pond--play far too fast--and absolutely overuse reeds and effects. They forget that all those notes were once attached to words--usually with a narrative--and the reason people remember the song.

got to hear this live at my local cinema, it was great! Looking it up, apparently there's either only a few 100 left in the WORLD, to about 38ish, depending on how you define left (former includes wurlitzers not in original conditions and/or usually in tatters, and latter is as original as you can get)
