I'm listening to this 12 years late and unable to hold back the tears.
The only other time I can recall having this reaction was an early Horowitz performance. Amazingly beautiful.

Superbly rendered. Anna’s beautifully rounded tones give such a rich and caring feel to the music she performs.

Judge said "The reason why avdeeva is the first prize was her vivid and unique playing" but I dare to say anna is more and more bold and obvious and exquisite.

È grandiosa. Non puoi distinguere questo Chopin dalla Fedorova. È una coniunctio perfetta tra autore e interprete.

Oh dear! Anna, you made me CRY. I've studied and played this piece, myself, and very well too, but YOU have come closest to realizing the Ideal Performance of My Dreams. I've never heard the beauty, the overwheming passion, and the tender subtleties in this great work executed with greater warmth, coniction, touching sincerity and splendid CONTROL before, and I've known the piece for well over sixty years. For this performance of Opus 49 ALONE I believe you shpuld have won the competition. All played very well, but YOU have that Something Extra for which we all long, and so rarely hear. You are so much MORE than a virtuoso, Anna, you are an ARTIST who plays with great wisdom, insght and emotional maturity far beynd your years. I wish you every siccess, and hope you get to play in every major city in the world and with all the great orchestras as well to great applause and adulation. God bless you, dear girl!.

Oh my god, she actually plays the bass notes during this section 11:00. Apart from Zimerman, I've never heard anyone who does that. Everyone seems to like Cho's interpretation, but he didn't play the bass at all. And I consider this a very important detail in this piece (in any of Chopin pieces, to be fair)

I have missed this for five years, not knowing what I missed, but now when I hear it in 2021 I understand that Anna has exactly the right feeling for Chopin, and the right feeling for how he shall be played. As daugther to an Ukranian pianist she must have got something during the years, and I also imagine that I can hear her father in this playing. This is for me a wonderful playing! I also want to thank Simon Ubsdell, a commentator who learned me something about listening to Chopin!

all should remember that Pogorelich did not win this huge respected competition...That made him even great legend among listeners...Ana is trully musician, and those who made desisions failed to notice her huge musicianship...If this was not vibrant, vivid and live,I do not certanly know what was instead...Something is so obvious:her commitment to music, and not superficial expressions of modern disstorted interpretations...It comes only throgh huge talent and even more than that through huge charachter of performance...There is nothing cheep in Anna Feodo0rova's expression...Everything placed there where belongs...That is why all competitions of such a type made very great suspect of what kind of musical quality they tend to promote...To Anna huge respect...

Yulianna Avdeeva is a terrific pianist but to hear her performance of this right next to Fedorova's makes her sound like a talented amateur. Fedorova has something so special that informs everything about her playing that you know she's the kind of pianist that only comes along once in a generation ... if that. She's not only the complete pianist - she's the complete musician.

In this piece most things happen in three different keys. Some think this a weakness in the composition. But Fedorova shows it to be a strength, because one can hear the colours of those keys. Very remarkable!

I ask myself the same question. She should have made it to the final stages at least and been in the last three. Still, she has nearly nearly 20 million views for her performance of Rachmaninoff 2 on this platform. I'm not aware that any of her pianist contemporaries have come anywhere close to that.

So, can someone please tell me WHERE Yulianna Avdeeva (Who?) is today (the Russian pianist who won the 2010 Chopin competition, beating out overwhelming crowd favorites such as Ingolf Wunder and Daniil Trifonov!)??? And just think, this very performance WASN'T GOOD ENOUGH to get Anna Fedorova past the Second Stage! I suppose the Chopin Competition judges - Martha Argerich, Fou Ts'ong and Nelson Freire, to name but a few - were in full "We dislike Ukrainian pianists with a purple passion!" mode during the second round. How else do explain WHY this magnificent and profoundly spiritual pianist wasn't promoted to the third round? As with the Tchaikovsky Competition, the days of competition advancement based on true talent and breathtaking interpretation are sadly things of the distant past. I have but two words: Simply disgraceful! :(((
