    There is also one more element, which was especially visible against Wang Chiqin: Ma Long was very relaxed, while his opponents were tense, they were repeatedly overdoing with their shots, playing too strong, as Ma Long didn't "want to miss" and often missed themselves. Ma was under no pressure to prove anything and this also paid off. One more element playing some role was also Lin's psyche, It's not the first time he's struggled with the problem of closing a match, and years later it still haunts him. I think this is the main reason he will never be considered by the Chinese coaches as the first choice for their team in the greatest tournaments.

    it was not just the backhand serve he introduced but also the backhand slam: finishing ralleys with straight backhand shots. So Ma Long did during the game what Lin did after the serve: reverting to backhand. Although Ma Long did this more in the game against Wang in semis

    These tactics are the same I’ve been telling players I coach when they play against a left handed player (or lefty verse righty), and is something I wish ma long did, and I’m glad he did. The biggest advantage is short forehand wide backhand. It’s the furthest to cover in the table.

    Great analysis. But I don't understand why would BH serve make a difference, he was generating the same kind of spin with reverse pendulum (side spin in the direction of Lin's BH side). Why doesn't reverse pendulum allow him to stay away from the table to receive Lin's banana flick? He can also hide the backspin or topspin in both of the serves, so I don't get it how could that possibly help him?

    • @user-oj6dl1ck9r
      @user-oj6dl1ck9r Před 16 dny +3

      With backhand serve, the ball is played in front of the body. This is not the problem it used to be since you cannot hide the ball from your opponent with your body. You can stand closer to the center of the table. There is less movement required after the serve to position yourself for the next ball. Not as much wide forehand to cover. Your backhand must be good for 3rd ball, but Ma Long has good block and counter. See Jorgic and Ovtcharov who play effective backhand serve. Sometimes just playing something different your opponent hasn't seen before from you is enough to affect his expectations and break up his rhythm giving you the advantage.

    • @deepbhadja5730
      @deepbhadja5730 Před 16 dny

      @user-oj6dl1ck9r hm. Although I agree with changing your playing style to break the opponent's rhythm, I don't think you can't stay at the centre of the table with reverse pendulum. You still hit it below and in front of your chest while bowing a bit. That doesn't prevent you from not being in the centre, players just doesn't serve it in the centre because with their momentum while serving, they move a bit towards the centre after serve. And about requiring less movement, we can say players struggle to be stable again but I don't think anyone at Ma Long's level is even bothered by it, they can adjust themselves according to their serves.

    • @saleem2991
      @saleem2991 Před 16 dny

      @@user-oj6dl1ck9rMa Long's 3rd BH is very good, though, not just his block and counter. He has a very consistent chiquita and easily does a BH topspin against a long push.

    • @brianleamba3635
      @brianleamba3635 Před 9 dny

      I think the difference is literally a single step, with the backhand serve if you would notice ma long is already positioned slightly in the middle and a step away from the table to give himself more table coverage, if he were to do a reverse pen he would need to take a step or two to position himself. This is especially significant when playing at their pace. I am only from my experience and observation tho, there may be other plausable explanation.

  • @nadav.sh85
    @nadav.sh85 Před 16 dny +1

    Nice clip but the analysis is wrong. Lin Guan and Wong Shuqin are two different players with different equipment. Wong Shuqin has a hard racket and rubbers like Ma Long's which are suitable for strong hits, Ma Long was able to beat Wong Shuqin (world num 1)in a match of strong hits so age has nothing to do with it.
    Lin Giuang plays with softer equipment that is suitable for weaker balls and closer to the table, similar to a girls' game where they play a fast but not strong exchange of shots, therefore it was difficult for Ma Long to match Lin Giuang's relatively weak pace, certainly after two games with a strong pace shoots against Wang Shuqin and felicis Lebron.
    Ma Long played exactly in the classical Chinese style that requires adaptation to the game situation after he understands it while playing. It's a shame that people are not aware of the different types of equipment and their effect on the game. Other than that it's a beautiful video

  • @kenji2787
    @kenji2787 Před 16 dny +1

    I think it’s a load of BS. Ma Long really wanted to win because it’s been a long time since the final wasn’t FZD or WCQ. Sure there were few plays where he was just blocking but this has been the most aggressive play from ML in a long time. He plays almost like a young ML with the occasional rest in between because he’s freaking old.

    • @HDSPKSRecords-gi1ob
      @HDSPKSRecords-gi1ob Před 16 dny +1

      He was blocking a lot more, and has developed a new backhand block which goes to the opponent's deep backhand corner that he has rarely done before. He changed his service pattern, you would have to have noticed that, at least?

    • @kenji2787
      @kenji2787 Před 16 dny +1

      The fuck are you on? He does not “developed” that backhand service. That backhand service is one of the most basic services. Ma Long tries everything when he’s losing, including changing service. He has changed to that service in the past. Most, if not all, players also do this. Fun fact: Felix rarely change to the same service ML is using when he loses! Dimittij also changes to the same services but he does that much more often.
      The deep corner return is because LGY’s attack deep to his backhand... The only thing he developed is a better backhand which lets him return the ball to where he likes without losing points. He usually just blocks it and loses points on backhands. He has never gotten an “attacking” backhand
