As the saying goes: When in Rome... do a meme review.
Quite possibly the most absurd thing either one of us have done.
I love Grant Sanderson! Thanks for sharing his intellect with us again, here's to round 3.
Please do this again . . .
Loved it mate, your content is absolutely amazing
When internet culture and intellectualism collide.

Netflix math show hosted by Grant: Yes.
Yes! I was like "why are you guys laughing?" Netflix is known for pulling off stuff like that. And there would certainly not be a better host candidate than Grant. I would definitely watch every minute of it
oh yeah totally agree, his approach and his voice would be perfect for a Cosmos type of show on math

Numberphile would be the no 1 choice with a host of mathematicians to cast in.
Oh hell yeah
You know someone's a math dude when they call the top right panel the "upper right quadrant"
He could also have called it "Quadrant 1"
Oh wow, I didn't even notice...
I didn't even realize 😂 good catch

*3b1b: "The devils in the upper right quadrant aren't nearly appreciative enough of projective geometry"*
@@theterriblepuddle1830 In "ordinary" math, division by zero is explicitly *undefined*. In other kinds of math, such as calculus, the limit of 1/a as 'a' approaches zero is *defined* as the number that 1/a gets nearer and nearer to as 'a' get nearer and nearer to zero, and is either infinity or minus infinity depending on which direction you approach from, though at the actual zero point it is undefined again, hence why the word "limit" gives it meaning. In projective geometry it is *defined* as 1/a where 'a' equals zero as equal to infinity (and neither positive or negative, as zero has no sign - [yet sometimes it's convenient to give it a sign to denote which direction it was arrived at from]).
@@theterriblepuddle1830
Protective geometry adds to normal geometry the "points at infinity" and one single "line at infinity", it helps when talking about operations like inversions, where you sorta obtain a result like dividing by zero, but it makes sense

I like how Grant is kinda taking the memes seriously and poking holes in the logic! :)
To be fair, most of the memes are subpar and not funny precisely because they are flawed. Good math memes either don't take themselves seriously (so the flaw doesn't matter) or are accurate in some sort of twisted ironic way.
With regard to calculus, I never once used the quotient rule after High School because I thought to myself, "Why do I need to memorize another rule when I could just write every single quotient as a product?"
Me too. I never use it. Plus I find the expression often nicer when it's not grouped in the same fraction. Leibnitz rule is all you need.

"You study Collage level [Insert any science]?"
"So you know a lot of [Insert any science]?"
It's accurate with any science to be fair, math being one of them. As a biologist, it gets me that people think I know just about all the most surface-level information, like: "what's the name of this plant?" I don't freaking know! I don't study plants! I just know a few... ask me about something else...
I think anyone who has studied the beginner level courses for STEM subjects, be it in high school or the 1st year of college should understand not to have such unreasonable expectations but reality often barges in, dashing all my hopes.
@@daksh8747 Unfortunately, to understand it, you need more than just beginners courses. You need to take at least a year in college/university and have all your understanding of what you already know broken down. "Remember all you learned before coming here? Forget that, let's start from the beginning." The first we learn in biology is about the classifications AGAIN. Previous knowledge gets in the way of new information that seems to be contradicting. "But I was told in-" "NO! They were wrong, forget about it." You also have to start looking at life from a different perspective, remove your anthropocentric perspective, which is why some people have a hard time understanding how life works (especially evolution) when they think they do. Life is a mess, it doesn't follow human understandings... in fact "life" is a human construct. When you realize all our knowledge of life is "how we understand and categorize something amorphous and vague" you'll get a better picture. Which is why it kind of stings when people ask those kinds of questions... there's way more to life than just scientific names... more than what most people can even imagine.
@@MrFreakHeavy I agree on most of your points but I feel a bit misunderstood. What I meant by beginner courses was introductions to what the subject really entails. For example, being shown shrödingers wave equations, being taught basic thermodynamics, etc would make one appreciate what Chemistry really is and what it's deeper levels might really look like. Someone who has studied such **shouldn't** (the operative word here) be asking such obviously stupid questions. What you've described about discarding your previous understanding of Biology and being fed a new one is something it shares with all STEM fields. I think after going through that people really shouldn't be asking this breed of ignorant questions even if they are indeed ignorant.
I mean, math isn't really a science though?
Science is all about natural philosophy. Observing the world around you and trying to explain it. Math is more... fundamental.
Its more like pure logic, finding and describing consistent patterns, rather than patterns of things in the real world.
Thanks for this, Lex. This is great
In regard to the topic discussed around 3:22, I just wanted to mention, that one of the major german TV channels called “arte”, known for its high quality content, already published a small CZcams series on their CZcams Channel called “Mathewelten” or “Mathworlds”. The show targets people, who most have an interest in mathematics but are no experts by all means. The show has some really nice animations and just shows, that their is a broader audience, wich would have interest in mathematical content.
Math is kind of hard to popularize because you have to understand it in order to enjoy it, while in like physics influenced movies you can have these cool black holes, flashy GRBs and stuff and you don't really need to know how it all works. But Grant does an awesome job in visualizing math even for the average Joes, so I'd be thrilled to see a Netflix math series by him!
Based on this clip I would 100% be ready for a math show.

When it comes to math tv shows, it feels like engineering and physics are more means to an end that the viewer already has somewhat of a connection to (whether that be answering real life scenarios or cool looking experiments) whereas maths introduce concepts that are fascinating if you take the time to think about it which I guess isn't the best for producers looking for mainstream appeal
Grant got biceps and triceps!
I think a mathematics show is needed now more than ever! You guys should definitely pitch it with other youtubers like vsauce and phys girl. They would go for it 100%. Also would be nice to have an aspect in the show that ties ideas directly to real world apps or even theoretical use to help build an intuitive big picture of how all of these seemingly unrelated fields relate. You can't fully study, understand, and appreciate any subject without at least delving in a bit into the others, especially for math, phys, cs. Really well done!
