Easy solution ... go with your brothers or cousins or go in large groups ( from church ) that way your together and makes them confident you'll be ok.
Groups as in your church family. But always respect your parents and in the end - both teams wins.
Tip : Clean the dishes before you go.

My personal opinion being a young pacific islander woman is my parents are strict on me going out because they feel that I can't protect myself if something was to happen to me, I'm 21 years old and if I was to go out to town for the night, they would only let me go if my brother went with me ( which I'm okay with, my brother is 23) but I think they just need to have abit more trust with me, I'll always txt/call them if anything is wrong, just maybe allowing me to have more freedom would be nice, I have a job, I provide for myself, I'm able to look after myself, but thats my opinion lol io malo

Sex is a taboo subject in Pacific cultures. Ensure boys and girls have proper sexuality education so they make informed choices. On another note, are you ensuring your sons are being responsible when they get a girl pregnant?

Why can't girls go out and live life either with one or more different partners , be safe , and be taught the ins and outs of sex and going out and understanding love and lust in a relationship . The more experience info they have the more wise their decisions will be . And yes I'm a father of 2 daughters.

I personally disagree with this long tradition. Young women shouldn't be subjected to stay at home because of the risk of getting pregnant. This idea of entrapping young NHPI women is definitely the product of infidelity, crumbling marriages, and distrust in general. I believe that NHPI should be allotted the same privileges as NHPI men. This panel is so uneducated and lacks credibility that I cannot listen to this.

Justin luuga this panel are educated people if you watch the show fresh it’s a comedy show. This panel Would of taken it serious if it was a real matter where they need to get serious with. If you see the host is dressed like a woman (fafa) impersonating for the sake of making people laugh.. Although I agreed with you they needed to answer these questions properly but instead they kept this simple but avoid the real answer for the question but it’s fresh tv. It’s a comedy show about pacific talent.

Justin luuga - they're not uneducated. They literally brought up the same points you wrote about.
But they understand what it's like to live through that up bringing, so their advice is based around what kids, who are going through the same upbringing, can do.
This is a culture that's very hard to break. Gratefully though, there are some benefits to having a more westernised upbringing introduced to 1st and 2nd (and so on) nz generations - that parents are being exposed to different perspectives and are gaining a better understanding of the importance of having deeper relationships with their kids (beyond the whole "do what I say and dont question it" culture). And how they can achieve that.
I dont think they agree with the whole "suffocate your kids and lock them up" method 😊

  • @omggiiirl2077

It depends really upon the Island group in question. It also has a lot to do with Christian belief as well. In days of old the only protected Girls and Women were those of status, or otherwise designated tapu. Otherwise most girls were free to move about(within the confines of the belief system) and chose their mate so as long as the family was in agreement. If you didn't have a certain status or rank, then there was no need to worry about alliances. These matters were reserved for the chiefs and rulers. Plus because pre contact life was to hectic, most kids were too busy doing something to be running about. Little kids played, but at a certain age most girls were too busy either making kapa, plating mats and other types of things, fishing, foraging, picking fruit, in the fields, making oil, watching the other kids etc. To be messing with boys. And Boys usually were too busy doing their tasks. Most people back then wound up with people in their villages and many times it was their cousin. Yes back then it wasn't a tapu to be with your cousin. The only time you hear of inter village/district/island/island group/ethnic group coupling is with the matching/alliances of chiefs and kings. And it wasn't a romantic affair.

Young women should define and take ownership of how their destiny will look like and stop boxing and blaming young women because of going out will cause pregnancy 😲

majority of parents that do this usually end up w a pregnant daughter which is sad cause no matter how "strict" you are towards your kids it can either be a good thing or really bad.

My grandma would always call me a whore when I was in middle school so that I would not be one. I used to live across the street from school and I wanted to play sports but Everytime I'd come home after practice she'd say I was out with boys and doing drugs and fucking around 😂 my gma was crazy😂😂 She made sex such an uncomfortable topic (even though I've been innocent all my life) that I wasn't even comfortable wearing certain things cuz the way she would make me feel in them. But at the end of it all I found out that she was just jealous cuz I was young. That's my story y'all

  • @mvaigafaf

If that girl cousin keeps running away, it's because of her parents. Stop blaming the child, Parents need to communicate with their children when they are young.

  • @maethelei5906

For me it was just a traditional thing. Even though my mom was white, she made us followed our dads traditions from the island, that includes doing dishes and respecting my brothers and the guys, and not wearing shorts that were too short in front of guys. I do agree that it is very strict, and I was also compared to my cousins a lot so it’s not the best. But it’s part of my culture and I grew up that way so I don’t want to let that go, but now I always feel bad for not cleaning up and have anxiety when I go out alone so it does not always have a positive outcome.

Hey Mia, I hope you know that it's okay to seek help for that area of anxiety in your life. No matter how big or small it may seem to you, there are people out there who can listen to you and help you out 😊 talking about it can help uncover the root issue of your anxiety.
