  • Blessed Trinity travels to Cartersville in the AAAA Sweet Sixteen. This is a generational Cartersville team led by the #1 recruit in the country, Trevor Lawrence. They are chasing a Threepeat, looking to end Lawrence's legendary high school career on a positive note. BT were 31 point underdogs, but they were undeterred, giving it their all and showing why their class of 2019 is perhaps the best in the school's history.

These videos are made for the love of the game. If you have any games or stories you would like me to cover on this channel, don’t hesitate to leave a comment. I might make a video about it in the future!

I love this video, the primary reason is at the time there was very little to no footage besides what was on the NFHS website (pay wall). To your point in the video with BT being a 31 point dog I think the HS Prep news didn't feel like it was worth the coverage so most individuals only know the box scores, great job of boiling it down. Additionally, at Cartersville, this game was a burner, I attempted to watch the Cartersville version (I like hearing the commentators) because they ran a separate video system from NFHS and this film was never posted after the game. A couple of tidbits for the history books:
    - Technically BT was 9-2 going into this game but eventually BTs Marietta loss (6-14 BT Loss) become a forfeit Win which changed BTs record to 10-1 (this happened in July 2018)
    - Smart prognosticators should have looked at BTs Marietta game for projections, Marietta, had a star studded team with a high powered passing offense similar to Cartersville. BT only gave up 167 passing yards and 14 points against Harrison Bailey (UT, UNLV), Arik Gilbert (LSU, UGA), Ramel Keyton (UT), Christian Ford (GaSoU) - I believe Coach King knew what the threat was, he mentioned it in his weekly radio show at the time...basically he said there was only 1 other team he'd rather not face this early in the playoffs (I assume he meant Marist as the other)
    - Back story-1, BT defensively had game planned and prepped for this match up after the Marist loss (basically 3 weeks of prep), BT defensive coaches were confident enough to know we would win the next two games. For two weeks BTs defense would practice play calls against a Cartersville offense scout team offense which were not used in the West Hall or Oconee County games, players thought it was 'strange' at the time not realizing what was happening.
    - Back story-2, Week 11 (week prior to C-ville game) vs Oconee County (against Max Johnson (LSU, TAMU)) Defensively BT ran 25 unique play calls (vs 55 total plays) that BT didn't intend to run in the Cartersville game with the goal of bogging down C-villes game planning the next week (the BT DC said at the time, to "give those guys something to think about")
    - Back story-3, Trevor Lawrence was outstanding in drawing defenses to encroach, BT found a ESPN clip of Trevor Lawrence cadence on the internet and extracted the audio and mimiced the cadence in the last week of practice, BT only had one defensive offsides the whole game (which was questionable at best)
    - Back story-4, BT had a tight relationship with Allatoona (same coaching tree) so BT had sideline and end zone film of that game. BT ran the exact same offense as Allatoona which helped the offense on blocking assignments knowing how C-ville aligned against Allatoona, but defensively while Allatoona lost 35-14 they pressured Trevor constantly and BT could see how it impacted TL/Recievers timing. Allatoona had a good defensive game but offense performed poorly in that game, it was solid scout game film (2nd closest game Cartersville played that year).
General rule of thumb (for any football team), if you are facing a superior offensive team you need to slow down the game, inferior offensive teams will rarely beat a superior offensive team in a 'boat race'. BT was perpetually in a 4 minute (slow down) offense which kept good/great teams scoring tight so then it came down to discipline at the end of the game. Look at Cvilles critical penalties (unsportsmanlike conduct, illegal chop blocking, 7 offensive penalties in all) and the fumble towards the end of the game.
Overall I felt like Cartersville should have used Rico Frye (RB, Bowling Green) more, he was an outstanding talent and the passing timing was off between Trevor Lawrence and his WRs.
I say all this so that a decade or two down the road folks will know the backstory (from the BT side) to help understand the preparation went in to winning this game, while the result was unexpected it wasn't a fluke from the perspective that the time was invest for the win. Generally Cartersville was the better team, just not that night.

I really appreciate this comment man. My goal is to document legendary games (especially ones paywalled by NFHS) so they do not get lost to time and I always love hearing extra info from people who were there at the time. I must say y’all mimicking T Law’s cadence is fascinating to me, and the three week prep u describe is incredible. One quick note, I did know that the Marietta loss was changed (since it’s listed as a FF on MaxPreps) but I felt saying their record was 9-2 was more representative of how this team was looked at at the time. I would also love to see if I could find the Cartersville stream as incredibly there is very little footage of BT’s game winning touchdown. The stream used for this video completely missed it, so I used the Hudl footage from the ESPN clip, and a friend of mine who went to BT sent me the sideline view of the play.

55 yard field goal in high school is insane

All of your content is great. Football is too good in the state of Georgia to not have more content like this. Did you ever see Clarke Central vs Buford for the region championship in 2019? It was an incredible upset

Thanks so much man! And no I did not previously have that game on my radar. It has certainly piqued my interest though - I'll probably make a video about it in the future

Little known fact in this game, Trevor Lawrence DID NOT completely a pass longer than 8 yards through the air. There were passes that exceeded 8 total yards with Yards After Catch but everything he completed was in Passing Zones 1, 2, & 3

That's fascinating. The BT defense really played incredible this game and only gave up 10 points to T Law with the other 7 points coming on the punt return.
