  • It's been called the Mystery Amp to the amp that never was. It's the 1965 JMI built Vox AC10 Super Reverb Twin head. It's the amp used in every pickup and guitar demo ever done on the Doug and Pat Show and it's time to get a closer look at this low powered tone machine. You might just want one of your own if you can find one.

    Pat & Doug Thank you for all great videos for us gear nuts....
    Many of us aren't fortunate to come across a VOX AC10 SRT in our life time, now after researching and speaking to different amp builders, I have great news for the Gear nuts out there. The early build Bad Cat & Matchless amps have a couple models that will give you pretty close FAT tones out of the Second channel.
    The early days Bad Cat Black Cat or Matchless C-30 are the best.
    They were designed by Mark a VOX lover also and the best ones are the early build Black Cat & C-30's. Remember the channel you want is 2nd channel and in back you can switch for 1/2 power more fat & sweet tone full power more headroom, then you want to check the speaker phase switch in back that will give slight different tones, check wish is more pleasant and close to the Doug's AC10 amp.
    Next most important step is all about the speakers, tubes and Humbucker guitar tone.
    I found the BAD CAT & MATCHLESS amps sound the best with gold, cream or blue Alnico Celestion's or blue alnico Weber's.
    current production JJ tubes if don't have cash for GE, Mullards or Siemens, the EF tube Electro Harmonix EF-86.
    Now just a good Les paul hopefully with a good set of PAF's from ONAMAC, GEPPETTO or BRANDONWOND. I don't know all the secrets just trying to pass along some of the cool information a been able to gather for many of the tone nuts out there now just lessons and play all day & nights. God Bless

    You got to love these amps. I had a 68 Vox AC30 sounded great. Got it on the bay late one night around $1600 which was the going price of the reissue. But it was just to heavy and loud. But I bought an all tube Thomas Organ made Berkeley super rever twin with the 2x10 cab. I just changed the ceramic celestions for a weber blue pup/silver alnico for more of that classic chime. The 12AX7 has an amplification factor (mu) of 100, the 12AT7 a mu of 60, and the 12AU7 a mu of 20.
    So the copper panel amp had the lowest-gain setup, Pat's had a medium gain setup, and Doug's had the highest gain setup of the three. Which seems to correspond to the way all had the same basic voice, but Doug's had the most brightness and edge to the sound...
    And don't worry... You can't blow anything up just by changing out the preamp tubes in those amps among those three types.

    What a killer amp! I'm a huge Vox fan. I play a 1993 AC30tbx. I'm pretty particular on what amp I play, but I would gladly play that tone any day!
    The first amp sounded a little more gained up, but each of them sound great! The preamp tubes in question might be for the reverb, phase inverter or tremolo. You aren't going to hurt anything when using a 12ax7,but it might not sound as good if the extra gain clips the signal.

    I’m late to the party but love old Vox amps and this is new to me. Gain factor is important but so is impedance and transconductance. The 12au7s (and the 12at7) would probably be in positions 2, 3, and 4 as they are better at being reverb drivers, tremolo oscillators and Phase inverters.

I get this tone too, so close I seriously cannot hear a difference and it comes from my Mesa TA15 on Top Boost mode through an open back 1x12 with a Celestion Gold. Set it for low gain so that it can get dirty when you dig in and is clean when you don't. It's fricken awesome. Sounds incredible !! the tubes, One of those is probably a "Reverb Driver" which may do very little or nothing to shape the tone, There is another that will probably be a PI tube that also has very little to do with the shaping the tone. (I need to see a Schematic to be sure) the others will shape the signal ...V1 and V2 will shape tone, (probably the 12ax7's) I noticed Doug's amp sounds warmer, and I'm wondering if those robust power tubes have anything to do with it, Pats sounded great too but only slightly "cooler" ....Swap those tewbs with each amp and see what happens.!!!! Love your vids!

    • @SGspecial84
      @SGspecial84 Před 5 lety +1

      One of those is in fact a reverb driver. The secret to the tone of these amps is the un bypassed second stage cathode resistor and the fact that its a 12au7, along with pushing the last gain stage (another 12au7) before the cathodyne phase inverter. I'm not 100% sure, but I think the phase inverter has less to do with the tone on this amp, than the 12au7 gain stages. I'll find out in my next build.

    @NINEWALKING Před rokem

    I am re watching this video after the years have passed by and disregarding that is useless I need to comment it now 😊 First off there is no way to burn your amp when using different preamp tubes from the 12AX7 family of dual triodes. Mu factor is different and in some cases maximum current rating is different but everything else is same. 150 mA per heater hence 300 mA when used in classic 6.3 V parallel connection. In pure gain stage function preamp tubes work with the voltage only and current is very small. Primary side of the reverb needs some current because it feeds the reverb driving transformer. So one uses both triodes in parallel and 12AT7 because those can handle more current. Same tube is used often as the phase inverter tube in lot of USA amps.
    When you use amp as only gain device what you hear is result of each part of the amp giving some level of distortion. Preamp, power amp distortion. You hear even output transformer saturation, as well as power transformer and in some cases rectifier tube sag due to the high power demand. In some cases even speaker breakup. Preamp distortion only, made by low master volume and high gain setting of the preamp can sound little bit hollow and even harsh. But when power section is distorting as well mostly amps sound sweeter. There fore in lot of cases small power amps are easier to handle and sooner get this full amp distress we love to hear. In this amp one could stuff hot 12AX7 tubes in all gain stages and get more preamp gain. That might sound better but could sound worse as well depending on the amps topology. 7189 are great tubes with higher power rating. This doesn’t mean more gain but slightly more headroom. That amp doesn’t gets its more gain sound from 7189 tubes but from something else. Maybe plate resistors of the preamp tubes are lower value due to the tolerance. Or overall voltage is lower. It sounds more alive and hotter but that would be the same with EL84 tubes as well. Watt or two more power gained from 7189 would not make it sound any hotter. Typically one uses 100K resistors as plate resistors in preamp tubes. Back then often resistors tolerance was 15 percent or even 20 percent. Hence same resistor could deviate from 80 to 120 K Ohm. First triode in one amp paired with real value 80 K Ohm resistance will have way more gain than one paired with 120 K Ohm in the other amplifier even with same tubes. Combine that with different Mu factor tubes and one amp could sound way hotter and more alive than the other. Simple test of swapping tubes between your two amps would tell is it in the tubes or the rest of the amplifier. One could do pre amp only or power stage only or full tube swap and make good video about it.

    The 12au7 has an amplification of 19, not 40. Not including the reverb driver, there are 3 gain stages in the signal path in this amp. It does its gain in layers, thats just part of the magic with this amp. The other part is the 12au7 cathodyn phase inverter. That gives it that greasy smear the overdrive has.

    I didn't feel like digging through comments to see if someone else said this. I listened to all three amps. When you said the difference between Doug's, with a 12AU7, 12AT7, and two 12AX7s, it explained why it sounded so much grittier and pushed than Pat's. Of the three amps, I like Pat's the best. It has the best qualities of all three. Dale's has a sweetness to it, Doug's is beautiful and gritty, and wants to bite your face. Pat's, however, has all the right stuff.
    You will not hurt the amp using 12AX7s. AT7s are between AU and AX, so you're also fine there. You could even throw a 12AZ7 or 12AY7 in and see how it changes the gain.
    V1 should be the main preamp, V2 should be Trem, V3 should be reverb, and V4 should be rectifier.
    Thanks, guys!

    Somewhere I heard or read that the AC10 SRT was what the first amp Vox USA / Thomas Organ made which was pretty much a direct copy, known as the all tube Vox V8 aka Vox Berkeley Super Reverb. It took me a while to find one and it is awesome! I was wondering if you guys can confirm what I heard? Also FYI which position are your 12AX7 and 12AU7 and or 12AT7 in as I have found with several of my other Vox and Fender Amps... when I put the 12AU7 in the first position meaning that the first tube in the circuit make the signal reach the sweet spot of the tube at a lower level as it does it's gain staging so I am rather curious to know of the three amps, which tubes are where. In my AC15s the path goes input then two 12AX7s then the EL84s, and I loved the sound when I switched the first 12AX7 to a Mullard 12AU7 then either the 12AX7 if you need more volume or another 12AT7, Here is the best chart I have seen that shows the output levels of each of those tubes, so long as you stay with that family of tubes I think you are safe, I have tried them in several amps with no problems.

    • @kiprichardson15
      @kiprichardson15 Před 7 lety

      The AC 10 SRT was first issued in 1964 (like the one in the show with the copper panel) and was made in England by JMI. Thomas Organ Company didn't start making American versions of Vox amps until 1965 after the agreement with the Royston Group who then owned a controlling share of JMI. Thomas Organ wanted to be more modern and efficient and make amps with solid state technology like their organs and started that around early 1966. The AC 10 SRT was discontinued (from the best we can find) in '65 and the production in the US was taking off. The Cambridge Reverb and Berkeley Reverb with separate head and cabinet (with tubes) was part of that initial Thomas production until they phased out all tube amps. We've owned a number of the Berkeley and Cambridge amps and they are built very differently than the English ones. That said, we think those two amps, maybe the only tube Thomas amps, sound great. We are familiar with the gain stages of the 12AX7/12AU7/12AT7 and have the schematic of the English AC 10 SRT that shows tube one as being a 12AX7. As we explored in the show every one of the three amps has a different configuration so yeah, they can get loud quickly and other fun stuff when switched around yet all three sound great. Thanks for the comments. D&P

      You have convinced me to look for an AC10 SRT... Anyway the only written reference as to the comparison of the AC10 SRT being the Uk version that Vox US Thomas first copied the only Tube Berkeley V8 on Vox Showrrom www.voxshowroom.com/us/amp/v-8b.html

    It could be the coolest looking amp ever made?
    I would love to hear you guys demo one in comparison to your Vox?
    There are few youtube demos of the Zodiac 30, with varying quality & conditions, so it's hard to get a great idea of how one sounds?

      We actually do have access to a real clean one and yeah, they do look cool especially with that glowing light thing. We are going to bring it in when we do Vox AC30's although they don't really sound like that, much cleaner to our ears.

    hi Doug & Pat, just wanted to ask you guys one question about Celestion blue speakers. I love Vox amps and I have a Brian May Special edition amp that I rebuilt with Mike Ryde help in England. I can run these Blues flat out with no problem. This is one loud amp rebuilt to Dave Petersen schematic. This man in England helped me through the rebuild of this amp. Definitely a guy to cover. There's nothing this man doesn't know about Vox amps. Mr. Petersen worked with Marshall and Vox amps for years. Brilliant man. My question to you is that I also have a cab built by Mather cabs in the states. another incredible guy. His cabs are second to none. Back to my question , can I use two Celestion alnico blue speakers with a Marshall bluesbreaker JTM 45 without blowing the speakers? thanks from Michael Newell from Canada

      Which ones and what kind of sound do they actually do. Cause I have heard a couple and they sounded well, like all vintage amps did in a 1980’s store, nothing like the albums you heard them on!
      But I am interested and I know they must sound good or great.

      Day and night difference. These old ones are much more organic sounding. The new AC-10 is nothing more that the Top Boost circuit mated with a 10 watt output section. The new AC-10's have digital reverb/tremolo, SS rectifier, cheap transformers, cheap resistors and cheap caps in the signal path. Chinese Junk!

    Jeez. This is the kind of amp that would make me buy a Kemper, just to get 95% of the amazingness. Incredible.
    Is there another amp that comes close? Or a (gasp) PEDAL? KassperT (below) says his Mesa TA15 can do this tone. True?
    EDIT: Sorry - i only just discovered this channel when i wrote this. Didn't yet know how entirely devoted these guys are to this amp and with doing things without pedals. If anyone else, though, knows how i can get a tone like this without spending a mint, let me know, whydontcha.

    • @Schlumbucketreturns
      @Schlumbucketreturns Před 6 lety +1

      There's no substitute for a real tube amp. There are LOTS of great sounding vintage tube amps, but not all the vintage amps sound great because there are so many things that can go wrong with an old amp. A low powered Dr Z amp like the Carmen Ghia or the Mini Z is great for a new amp. The Mini Z has a built-in attenuator, so you can get great tone at any volume. These two DR Z models both use EL-84 output tubes (same as the Vox), so the tone is similar.

    • @CentaurusRelax314
      @CentaurusRelax314 Před 6 lety +1

      Schlumbucket Returns thanks for the Dr Z suggestion. I'll check it out. I recognize that I won't be able to get that tone 100%, but in my situation, I'm going to have to be content with a fractal or Kemper 'compromise' for a while.

    Going by the schematic i have V1=12AX7; V2=12AU7 ;V3=12AU7; V4=12AU7
    V1A=Gain stage V1B=Vibrato ; V2A=Dry signal gain V2B=Reverb signal gain;
    V3=Reverb driver ;V4A =Gain stage V4B=Cathodyne phase inverter.If you delete
    the reverb and vib and ignore the tube complement the circuit is very similar to a Fender 5E3.

    Those AC10 early amps are amazing sounding. Hard to find for sure. I'm going to be buying a new AC10 combo because they sound great with an extension cab of your choice. I use a 2011 Non Reverse Gibson Firebird with P-90s and a new Hallmark Swept Wing with single coils. Any opinion of those guitars? Also I'd like your folks take on any pedals you like. Love the show!

    • @wildbillhackett
      @wildbillhackett Před 8 lety +1

      The AC10 combo is an entirely different sounding amp. It has a lot of highs and a mid scoop. Great for country twang or SRV kind of stuff where you want the clarity of scooped mids and single coils. 50's amps, whether they be Fender, Vox, or Gibson all have a ton of midrange and more voltage. That's what makes them distort so much. But they have very little twang at all. They're good for straight rock and jazz with humbuckers but lousy for country and R&B with single coils. It mostly depends on the music you play. Robin Trower could sound fine on one with his thick front pickup tone. SRV with his out of phase quack, not so much.

    I used to have an AC50 head, I used it for playing clubs but sadly I traded it for a Laney. The AC 50 at some clubs sounded amazing and at other clubs sounded terrible. I had no idea at the time but now I am sure the problem was that the AC 50 was very "voltage sensitive" .......... wish I still had it :(

  • @chokkan7
    @chokkan7 Před 8 lety +1

    Interchanging 12AU7s with 12AX7s or 12AT7s will not 'blow up' the amp; the heater currents for these are all similar, but the mu factor and transconductance (and especially the forward grid current of the 12AT7s) will make them perform very differently in the same circuit. Try different combinations and have fun!

    Hi Guys - Was that amp made in the US factory cos I've never seen one that shape in the UK. The only AC10s I've seen were conventional combo amp with either one or two 10" speakers. This amp has traditional Vox features but that angular cabinet looks very odd to me.

    • @andrewgarcia3136
      @andrewgarcia3136 Před 2 lety

      as far as i'm aware the stuff made in the US was only solid state, weren't anywhere close to the tube amps being sold in England. but I don't know everything there is to know about the vox range in the 60s.

    • @kiprichardson15
      @kiprichardson15 Před 8 lety

      The exhaust fan draws air through the vents and exhausts out the back. I mention in another comment that I play outdoor shows sometimes in the sun and it's nice to be able to keep the amp a little cooler in that situation. D.

    The odd things about this AC10 is that, to me, it has a bit of a Marshall type breakup. Vox usually have a bit of flub in the low mids, but this one doesn't and has a really musical breakup. I'm jealous of that tone. Sound glorious.

    • @DFraserHomes
      @DFraserHomes  Před 7 lety +2

      You nailed it. That amp has the top end clarity of an AC 30 but the breakup and growl of a plexi Marshall. As you switch guitars and pickup combinations it just keeps getting better which is why we use it for the pickup demos. We can hear the differences in the different pickups more clearly with that amp than if we used a more generic amp because we've tried them. D&P
